Late result blocks student's career

Ludhiana, July 19
Supriya Verma, a student of B.Sc III of Guru Nanak College for Girls, is shattered as she could not seek admission in the Masters degree due to the alleged failure of Panjab University to declare her result of Industrial Chemistry subject.

Her father visited the university twice to know the reason of the late result, but the official concerned said they were still awaiting the awards and expressed inability to do anything in the in the absence of the assessment.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Supriya alleged that callous attitude of the university had ruined her career. "All my aspirations towards further studies have been shattered and I have left with no alternative left but to sit idle at home and wait till the next session", she said.

She complained that her father also desired to know the name and address of the awardee with an intention to follow up the matter but he was denied on the plea that the information related to secret branch of the university.

"I alongwith my father visited the college to know the reason of late result and requested the Superintendent to follow up with the university. The Superintendent apprised that he had already deputed an official to know the reason, but no satisfactory reply was received. So he was helpless", said Supriya.

She said such awardees or defaulters should be punished and held responsible for ruining her career.

Model exhibition at MGM Public School

An educational and inspirational model exhibition was organised at MGM Public School here today. Students showed their talent and creativity by making beautiful and significant working and non-working models related to science, social studies and maths. A panel of judges chose one best model classwise.

The Director, Mr Gajjan Singh Thind, who was also the chief guest, congratulated the students and appreciated their hard work and creativity. In his speech, he encouraged the students and said that practical knowledge was must to be successful.

The prize winners were Simranjit (model on air and water pollution), Rushpinder (model-means of communication and transport), Babneet Singh (model on pollution), Jasleen Kaur (model globe), Vasu Narayan (multi-purpose model), Harman (different geometrical shapes), Nikhita (mitosis in plants), and Rupin (food chain ).

PAU scientist on editorial board of world body

Ludhiana, July 19
Dr S.S. Kukal, Associate Professor, Soil Conservation, Department of Soils, at Punjab Agricultural University, has been nominated as member Editorial Board of World Association of soil and water conservation for a period of three years.

He is life member of this association. Dr Kukal has to his credit more than 100 research publications in the field in various scientific journals of national and international repute and has presented his work at various conferences in India and abroad. TNS

Life term for 3 in murder case

The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr S.P. Bangarh, has sentenced three youths involved in the abduction and murder case of Sunder Lal, owner of Ms Pal Medical Agency, near Kalyani Hospital, Jagraon to rigorous life imprisonment.

The convicts are: Ajay Kumar (20) of Ajit Nagar, Raikot Road, Gursewak Singh (21) of New Sabzi Mandi and Pawan Kumar (21) of Mahavir Colony. They had been Jagroan and have also been fined Rs 5000 each.

Delivering the verdict, Mr Bangarh held, ‘’ the accused are no doubt, guilty of henious offence. The imposition of life imprisonment upon them would meet ends of justice’’.

The accused were booked under sections 302, 201, 364 and 34 of the IPC at Jagroan police station on October 1, 2002 following the complaint of Jai Pal, elder brother of the deceased.

The complainant had stated to the police that Ajay Kumar was a relative and he used to come to the shop of his brother to learn work. On September 29, 2002 he did not come to the shop without any intimation.

When the accused (Ajay Kumar) was questioned as to why he had not come without informing them, the accused replied that he had gone to see a match, which annoyed Sunder Pal. He asked the accused that he would be removed from service, if such incident happened again. Following this, Ajay Kumar left the shop giving threats to his brother, added the complainant.

Jai Pal further narrated that on the very next day when his brother did not reach at home till 10.30 pm, he went to his shop. When he reached there, he learnt that the accused had forcibly taken his brother in a car and fled away. He also noticed that the main shutter of the shop was locked, whereas the shutter in the street side was not locked.

When he entered the shop, he saw some broken bottles. There were stains of blood on the floor. The slippers of Sunder Lal were also lying there. After registration of the case, the police swung into action and recovered the car used at the time of commission of offence.

According to prosecution, the police found blood stains on the back seat covers of the car. Two days after the murder, the two accused were apprehended by the police.

During custody, the accused admitted that they had concealed the dead body in a gunny bag and threw it in the water of Akhara canal near narrow bridge. On October 5, the police arrested the third accused Pawan and solved the murder case.

Advocates go on strike in Samrala

All members of the local bar association abstained from the court work today and also decided to abstain for tomorrow as well, in protest against the alleged false case registered against a senior advocate, Mr S.K. Vashishat, by the police at Machhiwara last week, according to Mr Lavneet Kumar Sharma, secretary of the bar.

Mr Sharma said meeting was called here under the chairmanship of Mr Uttam Kumar Chand, president of the bar, and it was decided to meet the SSP, Khanna, Mr Naunihal Singh, tomorrow as the case had been registered without going into the facts of the application and without conducting preliminary investigations.

Mr Chand said the deputation of the bar would bring the real facts in the notice of the SSP and would urge him to enquire the matter.

Meanwhile, the bar has requested the bar association of Khanna to go on strike.

Religious filmmaker honoured

The International Sikh Dharam Parchar Manch today honoured an NRI filmmaker Ms Manjit Kaur Sidhu for the initiative taken by her in making the film ‘Manavta de guru - Sri Guru Gobind Singh’.

At an elaborate function, held at Grewal Market on Barewal Road here, Ms Sidhu was presented a gold medal, a sword and siropa (robe of honour) by Mr Gurdeep Singh Leel, president of the manch.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr Leel said in making the religious documentary, the film maker had made a bid to remind the Sikh youth about the glorious past and rich heritage of the community. He said the film would serve as a bridge between the members of Sikh community and message of the tenth guru as enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Mr Awtar Singh Makkar, Mr Kanwalinder Singh, Mr Gurmel Singh Sanghowal, Mr Balwinder Singh Bains, all members of SGPC; Mr Amarjit Singh Bhatia, vice president, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal); Mr Mann Singh Garcha, Mr Baljit Singh Bharowal, Mr Bikramjit Singh Khalsa, former MLA, Mr Hira Singh Gabria, president, District Akali Jatha and Mr Pritam Singh Bharowal lauded the efforts put in by Ms Sidhu in making the documentary film.

Functionaries of All India Sikh Students Federation, Bahujan Samaj Party, Istri Akali Dal, Lok Janshakti Party, Teachers Union, Punjabi International Cultural Society and other prominent persons from all walks of life, attended the function.

Seminar on oncology, endocrinology on July 21

The National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA) will organise a seminar on oncology and endocrinology here on July 21 under its continuing medical education (CME) programme.

The NIMA secretary, Dr Surendra Gupta, said here today Dr Devinder Singh Sandhu and Dr Naveen Mittal, from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, would be the guest speakers.

Dr Rajinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, would be the chief guest on the occasion while Mr Ramesh Joshi, Director, Punjab Pollution Control Board, would preside over the seminar.

Haibowal school score 6-wkt win

Ludhiana, July 19
In the inaugural match of the second Sanjiv Kaushik Memorial Cricket Tournament being played here at the Sarpanch Bachan Singh Academy ground at Balloke village near Haibowal today, Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Khurd, beat Nav Bharti Model School by six wickets.

Batting first, Nav Bharti school were all out for 89 in 20 overs. Only two batsmen, Ashish Kumar and Saurabh, could reach double figures, making 33 and 10 runs, respectively. For government school, Nirmal Sharma was the most successful bowler, claiming three for nine while Satinder Singh took 2 for 24 and Prince captured one for 20.

Government Senior Secondary School surpassed the total in the sixteenth over after losing four wickets. Navdeep and Rishi remained unbeaten on 28 and 26 runs, respectively. Ashish and Sidharth of Nav Baharti school took two wickets each, conceding 7 and 19 runs, respectively.

Mr Charanjit Singh, District Sports Officer, Moga, inaugurated the tournament. Tomorrow, the second match will be played between Saraswati Model School and Nav Bharti Public School.

TT tourney: As many as 36 teams comprising 14 schools affliated to the CBSE are taking part in the Ludhiana Sahodya School Complex Table Tennis Championship to be held here at the Green Land Senior Secondary School, GT Road, from July 21 to 23.

According to Ms Baldeep Pandher, Director, Ludhiana Sahodya School Complex and Principal of Green Land School, boys as well as girls teams will battle it out in this three-day tournament. The tournament will begin on Thursday at 10 am.
