Delay in declaration of results harming students
Swarleen Kaur

Chandigarh, July 19
The delay in the declaration of the result of the first semester of the ME (chemical), Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, is harming the interests of the students. Feeling harassed, the students are suffering for no fault of theirs.

The result which was supposed to be out in April has not been declared till date and the reason behind the delay is strange. One of the regular papers of chemical engineering — Thermodynamics — was shifted from first semester to the third semester following a direction given by the Vice-Chancellor in this regard. The students have alleged that the authorities were not declaring the result on the ground that the examination for the above said paper was not conducted.

In the absence of the result, the students cannot appear for any competitive exams. Their chances for finding good placements are also remote. Their result of the second semester is also likely to be delayed. And there can be delay in the degree also.

One of the students, Chayan Gupta, said: “I have got admission in IIT, Roorkee, which was my dream destination. But I have to submit the migration certificate and because of the delay in the declaration of the result, I am not being given the migration certificate”.

Head of the department Daljeet Singh said: “I am aware about the problems of the students and I have done what was in my hands. Now it is for the higher officials to look into the matter and declare the result as soon as possible”.

The Dean, University Instructions, J.K. Gupta, said a few students of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology had approached him with their problems. He promised to look into the matter and said the result would be declared as soon as possible.

The concept of education in today’s world is drastically different from yesteryear, partially because of the change in the time and mainly because of the advent of information technology. No doubt, the advantages of the earlier system of education cannot be denied but we cannot take refuge in good old ways of imparting education. Times have changed, so has the educational setup. One has to keep oneself abreast of times. It is here that the role of educational institutions like Shishu Niketan Public School becomes significant.

Principalspeak
Discipline must be fostered, not imposed

As the scope of education is broadening the functions of a school are also evolving. Today, schools are not just temples of learning but workhouses for comprehensive personality development. Education doesn’t mean pouring the students into one mould but enabling them to discover their uniqueness. Learning is enhanced in a positive school atmosphere, which builds self-esteem and morale of the students. Education is still the blueprint of the future but at the same time activities, which stimulate the mind and body, are encouraged to create healthy values.

Discipline, too, enhances learning. Discipline should be fostered and not imposed so that learning becomes relaxing and rigorous at the same time.

The school caters to the diverse needs of the students. Activities like skating and athletics provide staple diet to the sports lovers. To stimulate the intellectual’s mind regular activities are held in a inter-house manner. Students match their wits in debates, declamation, extempore and quizzes.
