S.M. Puri wins pitch and putt title

Chandigarh, July 15
It was 7.15 am when some of the golf enthusiasts who have come for the ongoing IT conclave had a feel of the lush green and serene surroundings of the Golf Range of the Chandigarh Golf Association, near Kishangarh, today.

Despite light drizzle, these corporate golfers played in pitch and putt competitions.

S.M. Puri was adjudged first, while Anil Khanna finished runner-up. Sanjai Sorick from Delhi put up a good show.

Earlier, P.S. Purthi, president, CGA, along with C.S.R. Reddy, secretary, and Jagdeep Cheema senior vice-president, welcomed the guests and showed them the progress made by the CGA in promoting golf in the city.

Inter-DPS swimming meet begins

Chandigarh, July 15
It was a day to remember for Delhi Public School children when they got involved in the swimming activity this morning as part of the three-day Inter DPS Aquatic Meet (Northern region) which began at the newly laid swimming pool at DPS, Sector 40, here today.

The programme began with an oath ceremony followed by a short but scintillating aerobics display. The opening day had events in 100 metre breast stroke, butterfly stroke, back stroke and free style. As many as 20 teams from various DPS Society schools of North India are taking part in this meet.

Earlier Dr I.S. Sandhu, Director Sports, UT, graced the occasion as chief guest along with Mr Kartar Singh, Director Sports, Punjab.

Kanungo, patwaris found missing from duty

Mohali, July 15
Mr Bir Devinder Singh, Kharar MLA, today inspected the patwarkhana at Landran village and found kanungo and patwaris absent from duty.

The MLA, who inspected the patwarkhana around 9.30 am, then directed the SDM, Mr M.L. Sharma, to issue show-cause notices to the officials found absent. He wanted to know why people were kept waiting by these officials.

Later, the MLA visited the Government Secondary School at Matour village and met officials from the Punjab Sate Electricity Board, Public Health Department, Municipal Council. He asked the council officials to replace the roof of one of the school rooms which was made of tin.

The civic body was also asked to construct a boundary wall around a piece of land owned by the school but was being used as a dumping ground. Proper arrangements for the supply of drinking water were also to be made. A tin roof of another room was to be replaced by Quark.

Officials of the power board were asked to get the trees on the premises of the school pruned as live wires were pasing over the trees. They were also asked to prepare an estimate to shift the wires from the present location.

Meanwhile, the MLA welcomed the appointment of Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo as the president of the state unit of the Congress. He said that Mrs Sonia Gandhi had chosen the leader from the grassroots level who would be able to unite the party.

JE suspended

Panchkula, July 15
A Junior Engineer posted in the Public Works Department (Bridges and Roads), Mr B.L. Pruthi, was today placed under suspension. An inquiry has also been initiated against a Sub Divisional Officer.

Sources informed The Tribune that recently the Superintending Engineer, PWD, Mr B.S. Singla, had undertaken an inspection of roads being recarpeted and widened in the district and adjoining district of Ambala.

The work on Barwala-Raiwali road, which was under the supervision of the two officials , was found to be of poor quality.

Mr Singla had recommended action against the two officials.

The concerned SDO, too, could face similar punishment once his case is recommended by the state government.
