Awareness drive on anaemia
Chandigarh, July 6 Addressing a press conference, he said the awareness level among members of the public, irrespective of their social strata, was low. Already, the association had conducted camps in Bapu Dham and Mauli Jagraon Colony and would visit four city schools to create awareness among schoolchildren. He said various causes of anaemia were bone marrow depression, leukemia, hypothyroidism and chronic mental disorder. Surveys indicated that 70 per cent to 80 per cent of adolescent girls suffered from anaemia. |
Sportsmen honoured for
achievements
Ludhiana, July 6 SI Jaswinder Singh, who was given an out of turn promotion in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the arena of Equestrian sports, was formally inducted into the new rank at a pipping ceremony carried out by Mr R.S. Gill, ADGP-cum-Director, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy. Both the promising sportsmen were awarded with cash rewards and certificates of merit. Jaswinder Singh has a total medal tally of 43, which includes 24 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals, in various national and international Equestrian events, namely tent pegging, show jumping, individual lance file, medley race, novice jumping, etc., has been representing the academy and the Punjab Police since 1997. He has also won two individual gold and two team bronze medals in the tent pegging event in national level horse show and championship held at New Delhi. Amanpreet Singh, who has been a student of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Public School was initiated into rifle shooting in 2000 under the auspices of the Ranjitgarh Rifle Shooting Club of the academy. He has also done the country proud by winning individual and team gold medals in the recently concluded 15 Meeting of the Shooting Hopes Championship held at Plzen in the Czech Republic with a 564/600 score. He earlier hit 581/600 in the International Shooting Competition held at Soul in Germany in the beginning of the year and is rightly considered to be a strong hope of the country for an Olympic medal in the coming years. Lauding the achievements of both sportsmen, Mr R.S. Gill, expressed the hope that both these meritorious sportsmen would further excel in their respective fields in the coming days and would be able to shape up to be serious contenders for Olympic medals. Mr Gill asserted that the Punjab police in collaboration with different sports organisations would continue to strive constantly for the upliftment of sports and every effort would be made to identify, motivate and shape up the sporting talent with a view to transform our upcoming players into achievers at the national as well as international level. |

Khamano, July 6 More than 20 counters of different departments were set up on the occasion. As many as 145 cases of old age pension, 30 cases of handicapped persons and 17 cases of widows were cleared on the spot. About 350 persons were medically examined. As many as 310 animals were checked by animal department. |
