Ayurvedic sex tonics found containing Viagra
Mohali, July 6 Dr G.L. Goyal, Director, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, has directed the Drug Control Wing to initiate legal action against the guilty after the completion of departmental investigations. Dr Goyal disclosed that since January, 2005, the department had taken 819 samples of drugs, which were sent to the government analyst. Out of these, 61 samples had been found to be sub-standard, while 42 samples were found mis-branded and 4 samples have been declared ‘spurious’. He said that the Drug Controller has been directed to take departmental action against the manufacturers whose drug samples have been found ‘not of quality’ and ‘mis-branded’, whereas he told that legal action has already been initiated against the manufacturers, whose drug samples have been found spurious. He added that during Jan-May 2005, 17 criminal cases under the Drugs Act, 1940, have been launched in various courts of magistrates in the state. Two people have been convicted for a term of 2 years and Rs 5000 fine and 1.5 years and Rs 3000 fine, respectively, by the courts for the violation of provisions of Drug Act 1940. The drug control wing had also been directed to take effective measures to ensure the availability of quality medicine to public in Punjab. He has also asked the State Drug Controller, Punjab, to take immediate steps in order to curb the misuse of ‘habit-forming drugs’ by the youth of the state. In this connection Dr Goyal informed that since Jan, 2005, to May, 2005, 107 joint raids by teams comprising of district drug inspectors/ medical officers have been conducted resulting in the suspension of drug licences of 65 chemists, who were found violating the contraventions under the Drug Act 1940. He further revealed that 23 among these suspensions were due to contraventions related to habit-forming drugs. The Director further informed that the Department of Health and Family Welfare had during the past 5 months seized drugs worth Rs 18 lakh from 64 chemists, out of which drugs worth for Rs 11 lakh were habit-forming drugs. Investigations in this connection are still going on. |
Blood donation
Mohali, July 6 As many as 132 units of blood were collected at the camp which was inaugurated by Mrs Kiran Garewal, wife of the Ropar Deputy Commissioner, Mr HIS Garewal. Mr M.L. Sharma, SDM, who also visited the camp, said that Mrs Jaswant Kaur had donated blood for the 45th time. |
Sports quota trials held

As many as 5 per cent of the total number of seats in each course is reserved under the sports category. Students seeking admission under the quota will be considered in only those games and disciplines in which the PU sends its teams for participation in the inter-university tournaments. The age of the candidate must not exceed 25 years. Otherwise they are ineligible for participation in inter-college, inter-university, national or international sports tournaments. This means that the sports category is reserved only for those active sports persons who would participate in the campus, university, national or international sports tournaments. Their achievements in sports must be supported by sequential participation at least for three years in the same discipline. A candidate who attains the first position in a competition will have an edge over someone who gets second position. If there is a tie within the same category, it will be resolved by considering the academic merit of the students. Every year, the university faces a controversy pertaining to admissions under the sports quota for various courses. The students who cannot get admission under various courses on the basis of this quota often complain about the gradation criteria. “The candidates feed dissatisfied because of their sheer ignorance. Sometimes they submit incomplete forms and they even try to befool us by submitting fake documents, that’s why a special committee has been constituted by the Vice-Chancellor, who will look into the matter and tackle it,” said D.S. Toor, Director, Sports, PU campus. Some cases, where candidates tried to take advantage by tempering their original certificates, were also reported. On being asked, Ms Dolly Dahiya, Deputy Director, Sports, university campus said: “We confiscate the fake or tempered certificate and mark an inquiry.” The candidates were placed under following categories: Category A: Candidates getting the first three positions or representing India in the Olympic Games/World Games/World Cup Tournaments/Asian Games/SAF Games/AFRO-Asian Games, National/International Junior Tournaments. Category B: Candidate getting the first three positions in the national championships/ women sports festival/inter-state/pre-asian games/ Federation Cup tournaments and the all-India inter-university/zonal/Vizzy Trophy/C.K.Naidu Trophy/college/schools/combined universities seniors and juniors teams abroad and within the country. Category C: Candidates included in the university teams/state, U.T teams (senior and junior) in the inter-university and national championships or getting the first three positions in the PU inter-college tournaments/inter-district/U.T championships (seniors)/state school/UT Games, CBSE (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan) Inter School games. Category D: Candidates getting the first three positions in the residential University/PU campus championships/university B division/evening and education colleges tournaments. |

Chandigarh, July 6In order to implement the Right to Information Act, 2005, aimed at maintaining transparency and accountability, the Chandigarh Administration has decided that all its departments, boards, corporations and institutions will maintain duly catalogued and indexed records.
All departments, in due course of time, will ensure that the records are computerised and connected through network so that these are accessible to the general public. It has also been decided that all departments will publish details of their organisation, functions, duties and powers of their officers and employees. The departments, boards and the institutions will be required to update their publications at regular intervals. They are required to publish all relevant facts while formulating important policies or announcing decisions which affect the public. |
