Olympian for restoring lost glory of hockey
Chandigarh, June 10 Bawa, earned the highest honour of representing the country just after India was declared a free nation. The team, under Balbir Singh, went on to win the gold Medal in the Olympics, held at London in 1948. He says there used to be no coaches, physiotherapists or trainers in schools or colleges at that time, only DPIs in colleges and schools used to look after sports. Now everything exists but we need to play a mix of modern and traditional hockey to beat the Europeans and the rise of the Koreans. He suggests that the IHF should conduct seminars from time to time involving veterans, present Olympians and NIS-trained coaches and a policy be adopted for training various teams for short as well as long period on the European pattern. The results will be far better if we work on the consistency, speed and stamina of each of our player, he opines. Born on February 12, 1923, at Lahore (Pakistan), he joined the Punjab police as Assistant Sub-Inspector in 1949 in undivided Punjab and retired in 1981 as the Superintendent of Police in Haryana. He comes from a family of sportsmen. His father was a hockey player in Panjab University (Blue) in 1905, while his two elder brothers played for Government College Hockey Club, Lahore. He studied in Dyal Singh College, Lahore, and later was selected to play for YMCA Club and Brothers Club, Lahore. Bawa came into prominence when he was selected to represent Punjab in the Nationals in 1945 and retained this position till 1956. He captained the Punjab hockey team in 1952 and also led the Indian Hockey team to play Test matches against Japan. Remembering his old times, he says with pride in his eyes that he had the honour of assisting Brig Dalip Singh in the Torch relay from Jawalamukhi to Delhi for National Games held in 1960. Being a qualified coach of hockey from the NIS, he trained the Indian hockey team for Jakarta and Lyon tours continuing the tradition of sports in the family, his son Sukhwinder Bawa is presently posted as SAI Cricket Coach with the Chandigarh Sports Department. On being asked about the present hockey technique and skills, he commented that the president of the IHF was doing well but he should not have ignored the veteran Olympians while forming executive committee. |

He is also a player with patience and perseverance. Twentytwo-year-old Sunil is indebted to the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association and its chief, Mr Rajan Kashyap, for providing him with all the help and support from the beginning to enable him to reach the top. Sunil, who is hoping to reach international ranking 250 this year says at this juncture he finds it difficult to manage his tours financially. When asked about fares on travelling abroad, Sunil says, ‘Yes, it is quite taxing to spend from one’s own pocket. Sunil, who had surprised everyone six years back by winning the national under-16 title and later ITF Futures Meet, says it was Mr Kanwaljeet Singh who was basically instrumental in coaching him. His coach used to plan and manage his playing abroad. Sunil said due to lack of sponsors, he, however, could not play many tournaments abroad as it should have been and thus could not collect points required to improve rankings. “The more you play, the more ranking points one secures. It is also disgusting when I see others who are not better than me having gained more points by playing more tournaments at the International level, adds Sunil. On the growing popularity of tennis in India, Sunil said, with more schools now having their own tennis courts the sport is gaining ground in the country but still for any player to come up, the backing of sponsors is very essential. |
