Amarnath yatra to be extended by 15 days
Jammu, June 5 The Governor wanted the yatra duration to be of two months to attract more pilgrims, but the Chief Minister favoured a month-long pilgrimage in view of security concerns. Last year also the controversy over the duration of the yatra lasted for a fortnight and later a via-media was found and the period was extended by 15 days. The same pattern was followed this year also. However, on the insistence of the Governor, the yatra will start for servicemen and their family members from June 21. Pilgrimage for the devotees from various parts of the country will start from July 6 and conclude on August 19. Since the Pahalgam-cave route is still under snow, Armymen, paramilitary forces and other security agencies and their family members will trek to the cave, the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati, from Balatal. And when the pilgrimage starts from July 6 both routes will be thrown open depending on the condition of the route linking Pahalgam with the mountain cave. The only dispute yet to be resolved pertains to the temporary transfer of forest land to the Shrine Board for setting up shelter sheds and for providing space for those philanthrophists who intended to establish langars for the pilgrims. The Shrine Board had challenged the government decision to withdraw the order under which forest land had been transferred temporarily to the Shrine Board. The court granted a stay on the order. The government has challenged the stay and the High Court plans to constitute a full Bench for hearing the case. The Shrine Board sources feel amazed and pained over the refusal of the government to transfer forest land to the Board for setting up sheds and langars because in the past the forest land would be made available for the purpose. Board sources said the government had no justification when “we had accepted the High Court directions that while setting up shelter sheds and langars there would be no felling of trees and no soil erosion.” Governor S.K. Sinha had visited the Baltal track to supervise the route clearance operations. Instead of seeking and government helicopter Mr Sinha had travelled to the mountain area on horseback indicating his annoyance with the state authorities. However, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed demonstrated his political acumen by meeting the Governor where misunderstanding. If any, was removed and conveyed to Mr Sinha that the government was ready to accept an extension of the pilgrimage by 15 days. He is said to have informed the Governor that he (Chief Minister) would welcome more than two-month yatra period, but security scenario warranted curtailment of the pilgrimage period so that pilgrims performed the yatra without any untoward incident. |
