PROTEST HELD: The Safai Mazdoor Union on Friday held a protest march against the alleged bungling by few employees of the municipal corporation and the suspension of their leader, Mr Sanjay Khosla.

DISCUSSED: Ms Satinder Dhillon, president and Dr Janmit Singh, general secretary of Principals’ Association of Private Colleges affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh, met Dr Nisha Sarad, DPI (Colleges) Punjab, on Thursday and discussed various issues related to private colleges.

BOOKED FOR CHEATING: On the instructions of the Director-General of Police, Punjab, and after an inquiry by the DSP, Special Branch, Mahilpur, the police has registered a case under Section 420, IPC, against Harvinder Singh, son of Gulzara Singh of Kitna village on Friday. According to sources, Harvinder Singh had three different passports in which he had changed the names of his father and mother.

KILLED: A 12-year-old boy, Inderjit of Bassi Kalan was crushed to death by a truck (HR-46-8565) at Jian Chabbewal on Friday. In another accident, Jagmohan Singh and his son Mahesh Saini were seriously wounded when DMU hit the back side of their Gypsy (DAF-1055) at an unmaanned railway crossing near Khudda on Saturday.

EDUCATION FAIR: To cater to the needs of those students who are looking for further educational avenues and quality education, the 18th India International Education and Career Fair was inaugurated at Khalsa College for Women here on Friday. The show is being organised in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Chandigarh by the Global Events and Expositions, a company which claims to have expertise in organising education fairs and career counselling events.

Hailed: Local leaders of the Congress have congratulated Ms Sonia Gandhi on her re-election as the president of the AICC. In a joint statement here on Friday, they said would help strengthen the party.

: To beat the heat, tiny tots of APJ Public School, Mundi Kharar, had a cool time enjoying themselves in a splash pool. There was great enthusiasm among children who played different games with colourful balls in the pool totally forgetful of the soaring temperature outside.

SUSPENDED: The jail authorities in the maximum security jail here on Friday suspended jail warden Narinder Pal Singh on the charge of smuggling narcotic drugs into the jail. Day duty officer Gurpreet Singh and chief warden Kashmira Singh recovered 200 tablets of lomotil and 10 capsules of hypnotix from him during routine checking.

HELD: Officials of the Vigilance Bureau on Friday nabbed chowki in charge of Chhintanwala village ASI Shashi Bhushan and Head Constable Karam Singh for taking Rs 5000 from Ranjit Singh of Barnala.

CAMP: DAV Senior Secondary Public School will be organising various workshops and camps from June 6 to 11 which will include summer workshops in theatre, art, music and dance. ‘Charitra nirman’ camp will be organised from June 6 to 11 while a sports camp will be held from June 6 to 10. During these camps and workshops various experts from different fields would be guiding the students to develop their personality.

SHOP RANSACKED: Four youths ransacked a shop and beat up its owner here on Friday. According to sources, a yoth, identified as Ramu, working at the shop, along with three other youths working in nearby shops, beat up Bhupinder Singh and ransacked his shop in Bansawala Bazar. No arrests have been made so far.

LOOTED: A gang of kale kachewale attacked a dera in Chokra village in Phillaur subdivision on Friday. According to reports, the armed gang of more than 10 Punjabi-speaking robbers, struck at the dera in wee hours and looted Rs 25,000 and gold ornaments.

FREE POWER: The facility of free canal water and power to farmers of Punjab is on the cards. It was disclosed by Mr Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Parliamentary Secretary, Agri-culture and Co-operative Department, while addressing a rural gathering at Benwalipur village on Friday.

Fire in bushes:
A minor fire broke out in the wild growth in Sector 6 on Saturday morning. Residents noticed the fire and called the fire department. A fire tender was rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes.

3 BOOKED: The police has registered a case against three persons for stealing documents from an office at the mini-secretariat here. The accused have been booked under Sections 420, 409, 379 and 406, IPC.The accused are Sukhjinder Singh, Harjinder Singh and Hardyal Singh .

SENTENCED: The Additional District and Sessions Judge Mr R. K. Sondhi on Saturday sentenced a poppy husk trafficker to 10-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The convict will have to undergo a further imprisonment of two years in case of failure to remit the fine.

EXHORTED: Heads of department and persons in charge of various outstation centres of Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here have been exhorted to launch a campaign against parthenium and water hyacinth on World Environment Day on Sunday.

CONFERENCE: The BJP Kisan Morcha will organise an inter-state conference of farmers to mark the Environment Day. Farmers’ representatives from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh will participate in the two-day conference, which will begin on Sunday in Chandigarh. This was stated by Mr Om Prakash Dhankar, general secretary of the morcha, while addressing a news conference here on Friday.

8-YR-OLD KILLED: An eight-year-old boy, Bobby, son of a migrant labourer, was crushed to death by a Haryana Roadways bus on the Rewari-Bharawas road near the railway crossing here on Thursday.

THEFTS: Thieves barged into the house of Satpal at Sulkha village, 12 km from here, on Thursday and decamped with ornaments and valuables worth several thousand rupees. In another incident, thieves broke into the shop of a motor mechanic Maha Singh, in Hansaka village, 6 km from here, and decamped with a motor and other allied implements worth over Rs 10,000.

WATER SHORTAGE: Residents of Bhudpur, Lakhnaur, Gujjar Ghatal, Balwari, Nandha, Khaleta, Mundia Khera and other villages have been facing an acute shortage of drinking water.

ROAD MISHAP: A-27-year-youth from Ludhiana was killed and another seriously injured when the motor cycle they were riding dashed against a boulder near the Sammela tunnel on the outskirts of this town on the Matour-Shimla national highway on Saturday, the police said.

BISHU MELA ENDS: Three-day Bishu mela concluded at Bogdhar in the remote area of district Sirmaur on Saturday. Presiding over the concluding function the Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Rural Development, Dr Prem Singh, said the state government was committed for the welfare of persons living in backward and remote areas where all modern facilities would be provided to them.

CONFERENCE: A conference of Law Ministers and Law Secretaries of various states and Union Territories will be held here on June 10 and 11. While the Law Secretaries will meet on the first day under the chairmanship of Union Law Secretary, the Law Ministers’ conference will be held on June 11.

MODEL COMPLEX: A model residential complex will be constructed at Dhangsi Dhar near Mandi town at the cost of Rs 10.5 crore. Mr A.N. Gautam, Town Planner, Mandi, while addressing mediapersons said the construction of the complex would be undertaken by the Special Area Development Authority which would be constituted after getting government’s approval.
