Settlers seek ownership of Forest Dept land
Ludhiana, May 30
Hundreds of settlers living on the land which the government had transferred to the Forest Department a few years ago have been continuing with the protest dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here, demanding that they should be granted ownership rights. They are being supported by various Leftist organisations. They staged a massive demonstration today and also blocked the traffic for sometime.

PAU Dean Tiwana resigns
Ludhiana, May 30
Dean, College of Agriculture, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Dr Malvinder Singh Tiwana, has resigned from the post. Dr Tiwana’s term as Dean was to end tomorrow. Although Dr Tiwana could not be contacted for his comments, it was learnt that he had sought extension till October 31, when he was to retire from the university, but it had not been granted.

8 booked for taking possession of land 
Khanna, May 30
The Payal police has registered a case against eight residents of Sihan Daud village on the charges of taking illegal possession of two bighas of land of Mukhtiar Singh. Complainant Mukhtiar Singh of Dallanwal village had reported to the police that he was owner of the land in the village but it was acquired for the focal point of the village and the panchayat transferred another piece of land of same measurement in the village against that.

At a joint meeting of Government Employees and Pensioners held here yesterday the UPA government was urged to set up the sixth Central Pay Commission. In private and public sectors, pay is revised regularly once in three or five years.

The maiden book by Ms Paramjit Kaur Nijjar was released here today at Punjabi Bhavan. Mr Trilochan Singh Virk, president of Punjabi Listeners’ Club, UK, presided over the function.

Yoga camp
Ludhiana, May 30
Punjab National Bank, zonal office, Ludhiana, organised a week-long Yoga Camp in coordination with Bharatiya Yog Sansthan for its employees. About 150 employees attended the camp. Trainees of Bhartiya Yog Sansthan said that daily practice kept the body and mind healthy.

Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 30
The Sudhar police has arrested the migrant labourer who had attacked his own friend at a farm at Boparai village in Ludhiana district at 11 pm on Saturday and had concocted a story to misguide the police.

Motor parts industry rues power cuts
Ludhiana, May 30
The Ludhiana Motor Parts Manufacturers Association has condemned frequent power cuts introduced by the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB). The association said the unscheduled power cuts for seven to eight hours a day had badly disturbed the industrial activity in the state.

Career guidance centre inaugurated

“Lack of proper guidance, particularly for job oriented technical courses, is troubling students. Because of ignorance about many new courses, students cannot decide upon various career options and hence suffer a lot,”said Mr. Ashok Mittal, president, Lovely International Trust, while inaugurating career guidance center of Lovely Institutes, Phagwara at Surya Kiran shopping arcade, Ghumar Mandi, here today.

Drawing contest marks No Tobacco Day

The local branch of the Indian Dental Association (IDA) organised a drawing and fancy dress competition at the Sarabha Nagar main market park here last evening. The function was held to mark World No Tobacco Day, which falls today May 31. Over 200 children in the age group of 3 - 12 years participated in the drawing competition followed by a fancy dress competition.

US teacher given warm send-off

Ludhiana, May 30
A warm send-off was accorded to Ms Diana M. Ballas, a teacher, from the USA, after she finished her eight-week teaching programme at MGM Public School . A workshop was also conducted by her here today.

Complex heart surgeries performed on children
Ludhiana, May 30
As high a number as eight children out of 1000 are born with a heart defect. Facilities to rectify such defects among kids were earlier not available in the region but since last one year, Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, chairman, Cardiac Sciences, at Sigma Newlife Heart Institute and his team here, have performed 35 major cardiac surgeries to set right heart problems of children, most of whom were below 10 months of age.
