Six-month drive against AIDS soon
Panchkula, May 30 Ms Gulati was presiding over a meeting of the newly constituted state coordination committee of the society here today. She said district co-ordination committees would be constituted under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioners to supervise activities related to awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS and drug abuses. She said the society would distribute condoms free of cost and install vending machines at strategic areas from where high-risk groups like truck drivers, cleaners and conductors operated and in slum areas where migrant labour resided. Ms Gulati said as part of the campaign, four Red Ribbon Express trains would run across the country, covering Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat and Faridabad districts of the state. The remaining districts would be covered by Red Ribbon caravans, to be run under the aegis of the society in association with neighbouring states. The caravans would stay for around 10 days at particular points where workers would go into the interiors of rural areas to generate awareness. Panchayats, Panchayati Raj institutions and local bodies would be involved in creating awareness. Ms Gulati said workshops of “bhajan mandlis” would be organise in which training to disseminate information about the disease would be imparted. Mahila Sawasthaya Sangthan workers and anganwari workers would organise camps and carry banners and posters. Competitions in schools and colleges would also be held. Others who also spoke included Director General Health Services and Project Director, Haryana AIDS Control Society, Sushma Madan, and additional project director of the society, Aditya Chaudhary. |
Kerala clinch softball trophy
Chandigarh, May 30 Displaying better coordination, Varun and Sabari guided Kerala to the victory path by scoring three home runs each. Jithin (2), Abin and Fasal (1 each) gave the finishing touches to their well-merited victory. Kerala boys did not lose their cool throughout the match despite the 6-2 lead by Madhya Pradesh lead in the first innings. In the fourth innings, Kerala displayed terrific game as Jithin, Varun, Abin, Sabari and Afsail made one home run each. Kerala clinched the issue by scoring five home runs and gained two-run advantage 10-8. The fifth and final innings proved unproductive and Kerala won the title. Last edition’s runners-up Punjab boys and girls had to satisfy themselves with the third positions. Mr Chhatar Singh, Additional Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Haryana, distributed the prizes. Results: Boys (final): Kerala: 10 (Varun 3, Sabari 3, Jithin 2, Abin 1, Afsal 1) bt Madhya Pradesh: 8 (Navjot 2, Arpit 2, Rahul 1, Shubham 1, Abhishek 1, Ankit 1). Trials to select city swimming teams held
Chandigarh, May 30 The trials were conducted in the presence of Mr S.M. Sharma, IPS, patron, and Balraj Sharma, secretary, of the Punjab Swimming Association, who were nominated by the Swimming Federation of India as Chairman and observer, respectively, the Ad hoc Selection Committee, Swimming, Chandigarh. This is for the first time that the trials were conducted to form city swimming teams which will participate in the Nationals. Fifteen swimmers were shortlisted in both sub-junior and junior sections for the camp. They are: juniors: Yadwinder Rawat, Aman Sharma, Ishan Bakshi, Gagan Preet Boparai, Angad Singh, Kunal Bhardwaj, Karan Bhai, Parth, Vivek Yadav, Prakiriti Sharma and Nikhit Pannu. Sub-juniors: Parminder Singh, Amandeep, Anmol Kaur and Chahat Arora. The conditioning camp will be held under the guidance of coach Gurcharanjit Singh and after the camp, the final team will be announced. The sub-junior team will leave for Thiruvananthapuram on June 11 while the junior team will leave for Kolkata on July 1. |
Zone A, Mohali score victories in Pandove trophy
Chandigarh, May 30 In reply to Ludhiana’s first innings’ score of 176, Zone A made 262 runs in their first innings. In the second innings Ludhiana was at 28 for 1 in 5.3 overs when the result was declared in the favour of Minor District. In another match Mohali thrashed M D Zone B on a first innings’ lead at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali. Mohali scored 278 in 75.2 overs whereas M D Zone B was bundled out at 177 runs. Harsimran sets new record
Chandigarh, May 30 Harsimran a class VII student of Shivalik Public School, also bagged gold medal each in 400 metre Individual medlay and 200 metre Butterfly. She also won silver medal each in 100 metre butterfly event and 4 x100 metre medlay relay. Harsimran secured three bronze medals one each in 4x200 metre Free style relay, 4x100 metre freestyle relay and 50 metre freestyle. |

Junior State Free and Greeko Roman Style Men Championship on June 4 from 9 a m onwards. Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Women State Wrestling Championship on June 5 from 9 a m onwards. |
