Abohar
RAPE: Gurbhej Singh, claiming to be an RMP, and his cousin, Sandeep Singh, residents of Panjawa Mandal village on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road, have been arrested by the Khuiyansarwer police, official sources said. They have been booked under Section 376/34 of the IPC for allegedly raping a minor girl of the Dalit community inside the clinic on May 1.

COMPLAINT: The Commission Agents Association, in a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner, has regretted that PUNSUP has not made payment against wheat purchased after April 30 whereas the Chief Minister had directed that the bill should be paid within two days.

HONOURED: The security wing of Guru Nanak Dev University honoured Dr R.S. Bawa on getting another term as Registrar at a special function held in Guru Nanak Bhavan Auditorium of the university here. Dr M.D. Singh, Dean, Students Welfare, on behalf of a security personnel, honoured Dr Bawa by presenting him a memento.

RUN OVER: The driver and cleaner were killed on the spot when a vehicle hit them while they were busy in changing a tyre of Tata-407 on the national highways near Goraya on Thursday. The vehicle driver sped away after crushing the duo. The deceased were identified as driver Gurmit Singh of Sidhwan Bet and the cleaner, Anil Kumar, a Bihari migrant.

BOOKED: Two persons have been booked for raping a married woman at Bhagta Bhaika village. Sources said the assailants locked her mother-in-law in a room and then raped her. They also threatened her of dire consequences if she raised alarm The police has registered a case against Gurvinder Singh and Harbans Singh.

ARRESTED: The body of Sangeeta Sharma, wife of Ram Gopal Sharma was recovered from her residence in the Prem Nagar locality on Tuesday. Sharma maintained that his wife died under mysterious circumstances. However, the parents of Sangeeta in a complaint to the police alleged that she had been strangulated to death. They alleged that Sangeeta was not having good relations with her husband. The police registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC against Sharma and arrested him.

ELECTED : The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club (City Smile), Banga: president — Mr Santokh Singh; secretary — Mr Mohinder Parkash Nayyar; and treasurer — Mr Malkiat Singh.

Tarn Taran
WOMAN DIES: Kashmir Kaur (22), a resident of Wan village, who was brutally beaten up by her husband succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on Tuesday. The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC. The accused is said to be absconding.

ACCIDENTS: In two different road accidents on the GT Road, Rajinder Kaur died and eight others were injured.

BODY FOUND: The body of a youth was found hanging from a tree at Rohna village, about 15 km from here, on Tuesday. According to a report, the youth was identified as Sandeep (18). He had failed in the annual examination of Class XII held by the Board of Education, Haryana, this year.

TELECOM DAY: World Telecom Day was celebrated in the Dharamsala telephone exchange complex, Chilgari, by organising a function and illuminating the buildings of the Telecom Department. The Sanchar Sarthi Award was presented to Rajesh Paul who is working with the Jassur telecom exchange for his outstanding contribution to maintaining telecom services during 2004-05. For the quarterly Hindi competition, Satyender Gautam and Hakam Bhardwaj were given the first and second prizes and K.C. Pathania, Onkar Singh and Des Raj shared the third prize.

MEET: The Department of Tourism will organise a trout angling meet on May 22 in the 7-km stretch of the Beas from 15 Miles to Raison. This was stated by Mr Ashwani Shah, District Tourism Development Officer here on Tuesday. Mr Shah said participants from Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh, besides the host state would take part.

Nurpur
KILLED: Washeer Mohammed succumbed to his injuries in the Civil Hospital here on Tuesday when a Mahindra jeep (PB-06 E-2118) in which he was travelling met with an accident near Raja Ka Talab. The deceased was a Gujjar and was coming back in the jeep after selling milk at Pathankot.
