Centre can regulate sports bodies: Jaitley
New Delhi, May 16 Arguing before Justice Geeta Mittal, Mr Jaitley said the Union Government had the regulatory authority over sports bodies in the country and could initiate action against the IHF and its President for violating rules and regulations. When the government counsel said the Centre did not have the authority over sports bodies but could only release funds for the promotion of games, Mr Jaitley pointed out that in the case of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) the Union Government had contended in the apex court that it had regulatory authority over the cricket body. He said the government had the authority to regulate sports bodies as the sportspersons sent by these bodies represented the nation in the international arena. He said as sports was in the state list, it was regulated by various state governments, the sports bodies were registered bodies and guided by certain rules and regulations enumerated by the government. The Centre can legislate laws on sports under the provision of the residual powers, as sports is in the state list of the Constitution, he added. The arguments remained inconclusive and would be resumed tomorrow. Mr Batra had filed a petition on May 3 in the High Court challenging the decision of IHF President KPS Gill to convene the annual general meeting (AGM) on May 23 for the election of office-bearers. The High Court had served notices to the Union Government through the Ministry of Sports, the IHF and IHF President KPS Gill. Mr Batra alleged that Mr Gill had been involved in financial irregularities and was running the IHF in an autocratic manner. In an affidavit, Mr Batra requested the court not to allow Mr Gill and IHF Secretary K. Jothikumaran to participate in the federation elections. Mr Batra submitted that after the filing of his writ petition, he was served with certain documents about holding of the AGM for the election of office-bearers and that the minutes of the earlier meeting had been changed. He urged the court to restrict the IHF from holding any election to the post of senior vice-president which is being occupied by the petitioner till January 28, 2006. He was elected to the post in 2002 for four years, he said in the application. Mr Batra alleged in his petition that Mr Gill and Mr Jothikumaran should not be allowed to contest the IHF’s next elections. In contravention of government guidelines that no office-bearer would have more than two terms or maximum of eight years in office, both Mr Gill and Mr Jotikumaran had been occupying the offices for the third term, the petition alleged. — UNI |
Praful Patel not keen
to contest IHF poll
New Delhi, May 16 The minister, who is now in London, said in a statement from there, “I have been reading media reports regarding my participation in the IHF elections. I have never expressed any such desire.” Earlier yesterday, dissident groups within the IHF claimed they had succeeded in persuading Mr Patel to fight for the IHF President’s post. “The Civil Aviation Minister will be nominated to the President’s post in Kolkata by the Indian Airlines, which is a full member of the Federation. The present President, Mr KPS Gill, has announced that he won’t fight in the election again and we hope he would keep his word,” an IHF source had said.

Port of Spain, May 16 Dippenaar hit five fours and a six off 47 balls to guide the visitors to 141 for three and victory with five balls to spare at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad yesterday. The West Indies, sent in, were restricted to 138 for seven after play finally got under way after morning rain reduced the match to 20 overs per side. Dwayne Bravo’s career-best, undefeated 41 led the home team. Andre Nel took two for 21 off four overs while Andrew Hall claimed two for 32. It was the first time that the West Indies failed to win a match in a one-day series at home. South Africa were always in control as they chased. A B de Villiers started the surge by hitting three fours and a six to make 30 off 25 balls. He and Dippenaar added 46 off the first six overs. Ian Bradshaw removed De Villiers to a catch at third man, but the middle order rallied around Dippenaar, who increased the rate. Jacques Kallis (18) and Justin Kemp (8) fell in the middle overs as Dwayne Bravo and Corey Collymore struck. But Dippenaar reached his half century with a six over long-off from his 41st delivery and Mark Boucher sealed the result by hitting a full toss from Fidel Edwards over midwicket from the first ball of the final over. Earlier, Chris Gayle started the West Indies quickly with a volley of boundaries, but once Nel made the initial breakthrough by removing the rampant left-hander, the West Indies innings faded. Gayle hit 28 off 20 balls with five fours and a six over long-off before he skied a catch to third man off the outside edge. Ramnaresh Sarwan, promoted to open the batting, fell five runs later as he spooned to backward point off Andrew Hall. The quick dismissals of their two most experienced batsmen, captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brian Lara, further set back the West Indies. Chanderpaul tried to scamper a single to Shaun Pollock at mid-off but was run out by a direct hit. Lara, greeted by huge cheers from a sellout crowd of 25,000, scored just 12 before he miscued a full toss from Justin Ontong’s off-spin to short third man. Port of Spain, May 16 Afridi hit a stroke-filled 104 from 46 balls that propelled Pakistan to a formidable 366 for seven from their 50 overs, after the visitors won the toss and chose to bat yesterday. Afridi led a strong Pakistani batting performance, despite the dismissal of captain Inzamam-ul-Haq for a duck — run out. Yousuf Youhana warmed up for this week’s tussles against the West Indies with 87, Kamran Akmal hit 56, and Younis Khan scored 53. Afridi then returned to bowl his leg-spin darts and captured four wickets for six runs from 6.4 overs, as Antigua and Barbuda were dismissed for a modest 118 in 32.4 overs. Antigua and Barbuda never recovered after losing two early wickets for 18 runs, despite a fighting knock of 46 from all-rounder Wilden Cornwall. The three Test players in the Antigua and Barbuda side were all dismissed cheaply. Omari Banks made 17 while Sylvester Joseph, and recently retired Ridley Jacobs, the captain, both made five. Brief scores: Pakistan: 366 for seven off 50 overs (Shahid Afridi 104, Yousuf Youhana 87, Kamran Akmal 56, Younis Khan 53, Shoaib Malik 35; Chad Hamson 2-47, Carl Simon 2-69). Antigua and Barbuda: 118 off 32.4 overs (Wilden Cornwall 46; Shahid Afridi 4-6, Shabbir Khan 2-19, Shoaib Malik 2-20). — AFP |
Polgar holds Anand
Sofia, May 15 Overnight leader Michael Adams of Britain signed peace with former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine to retain his slender half-point lead over his nearest rivals as for the second time in the event all three games ended in a deadlock. With Adams on 2.5 points out of a possible four, Anand, Polgar, Bulgarian Veselin Topalov and Russian Vladimir Kramnik remained half a point adrift of the English with two points each in their kitty. Ponomariov is at the bottom on 1.5 points with six rounds still remaining in this category-20 double round-robin tournament played under Classical time control. Not for the first time in this tournament, it was another story for Anand in which he might have held the upper hand. The Indian ace, who missed out on a promising position against Topalov in round one, had an optical advantage against the prima donna that did not come good yet again.

Mongia stars in Leicestershire win
London, May 16 Opting to bat first, Leicestershire put on 194 for nine in 45 overs with Mongia top-scoring with 67 before Bicknell castled him. Mongia’s 86-ball knock included eight hits to the fence. Nayan Doshi, son of former India spinner Dilip Doshi, claimed two wickets for Surrey, conceding 28 runs in his nine overs. Chasing a victory target of 195, Surrey landed themselves in early trouble and though Scott Newman (28) and Mark Ramprakash (34) put some beef into the innings, the former ran himself out and Mongia removed Ramprakash to dash Surrey’s hopes of escaping their fourth straight defeat and their innings folded at 134 in 40.1 overs. Mongia’s bowling figure read 6.1-1-15-4.

East Bengal beat Dempo
Kolkata, May 16 The first goal came in the 20th minute of the first half when collecting a miscued clearance from Stanley Colaco, Jeremiah threw off his marker Majeek Bolaji to score with a perfect grounder. The second goal came 11 minutes later when Dempo goalkeeper Satish Kumar made a mess of a regular cross from Climax Lawrence. Rahim Nadim lurking nearby volleyed into an open net. Dempo reduced the margin 37 minutes into the second half when Ranti Martins was brought down in the penalty box by N Suresh after the striker cut in dangerously after being fed by Nasimento Silvera. Clifford Miranda scored from the spot kick, placing the ball to the right of East Bengal keeper Rajot Ghoshdastidar. East Bengal now have 43 points and Dempo 44 points, with each to play one more match.

Paes is brilliant, says Pat Cash
Kolkata, May 16 “It is sad that doubles is not getting the recognition it deserves. The governing body of tennis should realise this,” Cash told newspersons here. Describing doubles as an exciting form of the game, the 1987 Wimbeldon champion said it was always a delight to watch. “It is very spectator-friendly. You get to see breathtaking shots which you don’t see in singles,” he said. Naming Leander Paes as one his favourites, Cash said, “He is brilliant, but it’s a pity that people don’t get to see this fine doubles player often as he mostly plays on outer courts.” Asked how he rated India’s teenage sensation Sania Mirza, Cash said though he had not seen the youngster in action, he had heard a lot of good things about her. “She is improving fast. But she needs a lot of luck and has to stay injury-free,” he said. Cash lamented that the number of serve-and-volley players had dwindled in present-day tennis. “Earlier, it was not so. Look at Roger Federer and Pete Sampras. They are very good serve-and-volley players. That’s why they are doing so well”, said Cash, who had mastered this genre during his days as a player. The Australian stressed the importance of grass in tennis and disagreed with Ivan Lendl’s legendary comment, ‘Grass is for cows”. “I don’t agree. Grass will be there as a surface as long as tennis exists.” Cash, who is here to hold a three-day clinic for talented youngsters at the Bengal Tennis Association, said he would try to impart some techniques of modern tennis to the charges. “I want to improve their skills in body movement and also streamline their sense of position. Once they learn to take the correct position, they can learn to play their best shots.” — PTI |
Rathore leads Indian challenge
in World Cup
New Delhi, May 16 India’s several top shooters would be competing in the ISSF World Cup from today to May 23 in Rome and the World Shotgun Championship from May 24 to 31 in Lonato. But the spotlight would be on Rathore, who would be using his brand new Perazzi DB 81 for the first time. The Lt-Colonel believed that with the switch to the new gun specifically designed to suit his style, his performance was bound to be better. “The difference is that with the MX8 (his previous gun), the eye used to be 2 mm over the barrel. With the new DB 81, the eye will be 20 mm over the barrel. It helps in better visibility and eases the stress on the eyes during prolonged concentration,” Rathore said. The Perazzi DB 81 is a 0.12 bore twin-barrel, over-and-under shotgun, with raised sights. “The change to the new gun was long overdue. I competed in the Olympics with the same gun that I used as a newcomer to this sport six years ago, when I did not know much about gun fit,” the ace marksman said “The new one is custom-made for me and will help improve my performance from good to very good.”

Roller skating team 2nd in Asian meet
New Delhi, May 16 The team, which bagged two silver and eight bronze medals, finished behind Chinese Taipei while hosts Korea claimed the third spot. The 35-member contingent, which returned to India this morning, was felicitated by Union Sports Minister Sunil Dutt who assured the Roller Skating Federation of India that the government would take necessary steps to provide financial assistance to the body. “Roller skating was a relatively unknown sport in the country and hence no one paid much attention. Now that you have proved your credentials, we will do everything to provide necessary help to the federation,” he said. Roller skating is currently in the “others” category of the ministry due to which the national team does not get any financial grant from the government for its foreign tours. While this list has remained unchanged for many years, the ministry had recently decided to make necessary amendments and move the sports discplines into higher or lower grade depending upon the performance of the country at the international level. In the Asian championship, competitions were held in speed, artistic and roller hockey events. The women’s roller hockey team bagged the silver while the men clinched the bronze. Anup Kumar Yama clinched a silver and two bronze medals in the artistic event while India claimed three bronze medals in the speed event.

Sunil Dutt has a dig
at BCCI
New Delhi, May 16 Addressing the national
roller skating team, which finished overall second in the 11th Asian
Roller Skating Championship in Korea, Dutt said he was “happy” that
they won the laurels while representing India and not their federation. “It
is great that you represented India at the international level and
finished second. It enhances the reputation of the country. I have no
doubt that you will emerge at the top next time,” he added. The
minister said he was very “hurt” when the BCCI, at a hearing of a
case in Supreme Court a few months ago, submitted that the national
cricket team represented the Board and not India. “They should know
that nobody knows what is the BCCI at the international level but
everybody knows India,” Dutt said. — PTI |
