Swimming trials on May 30

Swimming activities in the city will finally take off soon with the ad hoc committee appointed at the behest of the Swimming Federation of India deciding to hold selection trials for the Chandigarh swimming team on May 30 at swimming pool, Sector 23-A (yoga centre), Chandigarh.

A meeting of the ad hoc committee under the chairmanship of Mr S.M. Sharma was held to select the Chandigarh swimming team for the 22nd Subjunior National Aquatics Championships being held at Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) from June 16 to 19 and the 32nd Junior National Aquatics Championships being held at Kolkata from July 3 to 7, respectively.

The selection trials will be held in the following age groups for both boys and girls: Group–I (15 to 17 years - born in the years 1988, 1989, 1990): Group–II (13 to 14 years - born in the year 1991 and 1992): Group–III (11 and 12 years - born in the years 1993 and 1994); Group–IV (9 and 10 years-born in the years 1995 and1996).

The selection will be made for different swimming events of subjuniors and juniors. These teams will participate for the first time, on behalf of the Union Territory of Chandigarh in the nationals.

Mr Sharma further informed that those swimmers who were desirous of take part in the trials should get their names registered with Mr Paramjit Singh, senior swimming coach, at the Sector 23-D, swimming pool (nursery) latest by 6 p.m. on May 28. Boys and girls who have been participating from other states during the previous years will have to secure no objection certificates from those State Associations before their selection into Chandigarh teams.

Carrom results

Chandigarh, May 14
Farheen and Aita Ram Tamang upset their respective opponents Kumari Kiran and Viren Sood in the girls and boys sections respectively, in the eighth St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament which began here today at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. Most of the seeded players advanced to the next round.

The winners in various sections are, men’s singles- Tasleem, Bunty, Sanjeev, R iyasat Ali and Om Prakash; womens’ singles- Inderkanta, Saroj Chandel, Harshpreet, Anjali Yadav and Farheen; boys junior singles-Wasim Akram, Naushad Malik, Sartaj, Mansih Negi, Piyush Sood and Aita Ram Tamang; Girls junior singles-Navrosh Sudan, Neha Goyal, Samridhi Piplani, Aarti, Akanksha, Anjali and Gesu Jaiswal.

Dodgeball referees’ clinic in city

Chandigarh, May 14
The first Dodgeball referees’ clinic to clarify rules and regulations, was organised by the newly formed Dodgeball Federation of India at Government College for Men, Sector 11, here today.

The state secretaries of the federation of 10 states along with physical education teachers from various colleges and schools of the city attended the clinic. Dr R.S. Brar, chairman of the technical committee of the federation, and Head of the Department of Physical Education of GCM-11, clarified the rules and regulations in details. The demonstration of the game was also held at the college court.

“The first Dodgeball National League shall be organised in June, this year”, said Mr P.S. Brar, general secretary of the federation.

DAV School Club win

Chandigarh, May 14
DAV School Club, Sector 8-C, beat Coaching Centre, Sector 42, 46-40 in the boys final of the 20th Subjunior UT State Handball Championship 2005-06 at DAV School, Sector 8, today.

In the girls’ final, Coaching Centre, Sector 42, beat CC-19 17-15. Nirmala scored the maximum 10 goals for the winning team.

In the boys’ junior category CC-23 won the match after beating Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, by 25-11.

Sidhu for Muscat conference

Dr JPS Sidhu, Joint Director, Sports Department, Chandigarh, has been invited by the Asian Football Confederation for a presentation on mental training in competitive sports in the 3rd Asian conference on sciences and football medicine to be held at Muscat from May 19 to 22.

Mr Sidhu, a renowned physical educationist and sports administrator has earlier attended many international conferences.

Admn allocates additional charge to officials

The Chandigarh Administration yesterday made the following changes in the allocation of work to officials. This was required as the Secretary, Finance, Mr S.K. Sandhu, and the Director Information Technology, Mr Vivek Atray, are away on an official tour to the USA. The Director Public Relations, Mr S.P. Arora, is also repatriated to his parent cadre, Haryana.

All work of Mr Sandhu has been handed over to the Home Secretary, Mr Krishna Mohan. The other changes are Mr Bhupinder Singh, Joint Secretary, Home, will continue to look after the work of Joint Secretary (Local Government), Director Public Relations and Director Hospitality, in addition to his own duties. Mr R.C. Sharma, Controller, Printing & Stationery, Chandigarh, will look after the work of Secretary, House Allotment Committee, Joint Secretary (Health & Medical Education), and Joint Secretary, Technical Education, in addition to his own duties.

Mr D.S. Mangat, Director Public Instructions (S), will look after the work of Director Information Technology and Joint Secretary, Finance. In addition to his own duties. Mr S.K. Setia, Land Acquisition Officer, will also look after the work of Joint Secretary (Urban Development).
