Major, Cong leader
among five killed
Srinagar, May 7 Sources said a powerful IED was triggered by militants at Donipora Bijbehara in south Kashmir district of Anantnag today when a patrol party was passing the area. While the official sources reported the death of a soldier in the incident, a Hizbul Mujahideen spokesman claimed that one officer and three soldiers were killed in the blast. A massive hunt was on to nab the militants, the sources added. The militants kidnapped and later killed a Congress block president, Abdul Rahim Pal, at Tangmarg early this morning. The security forces killed a militant at Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara last night during a search operation. An Army Major who was injured in the clash died in the hospital, the sources said. An encounter took place between the militants and the security forces at Trehgam in Kupwara district last night during which a class 12 student, Abdul Ahad Wani, was killed. People of the area today took to streets and protested against the killing. Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the road. The demonstrators alleged that Wani was killed by the security forces. Nobody from PoK can claim property: Mufti
Jammu, May 7 Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a function to inaugurate Government Women’s Polytechnic here this afternoon, the Chief Minister said nobody from PoK had claimed property in the state and reports about a woman traveller, Firida Gani from Muzaffarabad, having claimed her ancestral property in Srinagar were untrue. He said the woman had only made a statement to the press and had not filed any claim. “As Chief Minister of the state, I say there is not a single instance where anybody from PoK has property here”, he said while seeking to dispel the apprehensions caused by some baseless reports in this regard which he said caused misunderstanding. He said even if one were to presume that somebody from that side would claim rights over property in the state he or she would have to first establish credentials as a citizen of India and the Union Home Ministry alone could verify such a claim. He asked the people who had been allotted evacuee property under the relevant laws not to pay heed to rumours and misinformation. The Chief Minister said the Evacuee property Act defends the rights of the refugees in possession of the evacuee property and assured that no power would dispossess them of this property. Referring to the Resettlement Act and the concern expressed by some people about it, the Chief Minister said the Act was enacted in 1982 and was sent to the Supreme Court for its opinion. The apex court, he said, returned the Act in 2001 and also stayed its implementation the same year. He said given the stay from the highest court of the country there was no question of the Act being implemented. |
Govt offices in Srinagar may shift
to Parihaspora
Srinagar, May 7 This is already under the consideration of the task force set up to monitor the Prime Minister’s package of Rs 24,000 crore to the state. “It is only an idea and not even a formal proposal as yet”, said Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh. The shifting of the offices from the winter Capital, according to him, would ease the burden and congestion here. In case of a formal proposal for shifting of the administrative offices followed by approval of the state government, this could be done within three years at a cost of Rs 15,000 crore. It would help in the growth of economic activity and employment generation, the Finance Minister told The Tribune here. Any other location could also be considered for setting up of the Capital away from the city, the minister said, adding that Parihaspora was under consideration for its historic importance. Geological and architectural experts would also be consulted to work out the
feasibility of the location. Parihaspora in Paraspor pargana, had been established as a Capital by King Lalitadatya in the 8th century AD. It has places of great historical interest and remained unidentified until MA Stein visited it in 1892 in view of his work of translating Kalahana’s Rajtarangini. Various positive aspects are in sight in case of shifting of offices from here, which include beautification of the city areas, that could be made more attractive for the tourists. This would include widening of roads and proper planning of the business and residential areas with little congestion on the roads. The construction of flyovers to avoid traffic congestion on roads could also be avoided, the minister opined. Apart from the picnic spots of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, places of attraction could be made available for the tourists here which, under the present circumstances, is not possible, the minister said. The administration and other facilities would be made available to the people in an organised manner, who would be provided with a variety of facilities at one place. |
