PGI to streamline funds allotment to poor
Neelam Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 25
It’s step taken in the right direction, this is what appears on the onset of setting up the Fund Allotment Committee at the PGI. The idea behind constituting the committee is to streamline the funds allotment for the poor patients, who seek help from the outside agencies for their treatment.

Headed by Prof Subhash Verma, Head of Department of Internal Medicine, the committee is formed to monitor and allocate the funds that are collected for the poor patients through appeals in the media and voluntarily donated by the samaritans. Other members in the committee include Dr Meenu Singh, Dr F.D. Patel and Dr Vipin Koushal.

“For the allotment of funds below the amount of Rs 2,000, the Medical Superintendent would be the in-charge. The committee would step in when the funds above Rs 2,000 are involved. Earlier, the task of the entire monitoring and allotment of such funds for the poor patients was with the MSs office,” disclosed a senior official.

The Institute is frequently criticised for the delay in actual allotment of the funds, which are collected for the poor patients due to the long winding administrative procedures. The newly-formed committee would attempt to amend this lacuna as well.

“In fact we are planning to involve the local non-government organisations (NGOs), the city residents and government bodies to contribute towards this fund. In that way we can create a pool for the poor patients and give the poor patients’ the money according to their requirements,’’ added the official. It is also learnt that the portion of the extra money generated by the introduction of the one-time package deals in various department would be diverted to this fund.

PGI’s poor patient load: As many as 20 per cent of the patients coming to the PGI daily avail of the benefit of the poor patient status, by which all hospital charges are waived. To afford the expensive cost of treatment in the chronic ailments, many of the patients from the lower economic strata seek help from public to raise money, which is collected at the PGI and managed by the staff.
