‘Free movement’ of militants scares villagers Jammu, April 17 Eyewitness accounts from the area revealed that groups of militants, equipped with assault rifles, frequented houses of villagers for food and shelter. A schoolteacher from Dablal village said “nobody in our area has dared to refuse food because of scare.” Another eyewitness said, “We have informed the Army, the BSF and the police many times about the presence of militants but no separate security pickets had been established in the villages around Kalakot.” He said more than eight families had fled Ghanara and Kalara a month ago when militants dished out threat of elimination if they did not send their boys for arms training with them (militants).
Though these families have returned to their villages after sporadic patrolling carried out by the security forces, people in the entire belt continued to be panic stricken. Reports said these groups of militants had sneaked into Kalakot belt from neighbouring Rajouri where operations by the security forces and snow had caused lot of inconvenience to them. According to these reports, several other groups may have entered into the Kalakot rural belt from the Pir Panjal alpine forest belts where they had nothing to fall on during the winter months. |
