Passengers list for next bus given to
Pak
Srinagar, April 10 He said a list of 119 prospective passengers intending to visit Muzaffarabad in the next bus was handed over to the Pakistani authorities on Friday, a day after 19 Indian and 30 PoK passengers crossed sides on Thursday. The lists were exchanged at a meeting between the two sides held on the other side of the Kaman Bridge, now knowns as “Aman Setu (Peace Bridge)” at Chakothi in the PoK. The Indian side was led by the RPO, Srinagar, while the Muzaffarabad Deputy Commissioner headed the Pakistani team. Both have been designated by the respective governments to issue travel permits for the passengers. “We have exchanged the lists for the second bus. APHC panel to discuss Umar Farooq’s
proposal
Jammu, April 10 General Musharraf is scheduled to fly to Delhi on April 16 and a week before his arrival in the Capital the APHC Chairman had stated that if permitted “we wish to meet General Musharraf and Mr Manmohan Singh.” The meeting of the executive committee has been convened so that the party leaders received a nod for the proposed meeting. A senior APHC leader, Prof Abdul Gani
Bhat, told this correspondent today “if required we may convene a meeting of the General Council also so that each constituent of the conglomerate endorsed our plan.” Asked what had prompted the APHC leadership to seek an audience with General Musharraf and Mr Manmohan Singh, Prof Bhat said, “When we meet we will not discuss
cricket. We want to interact with the two key players in the light of the developing relations between New Delhi and Islamabad.” “We wish to know when the two sides will start a serious debate on the settlement of the Kashmir issue and we are supposed to know it because we represent the sentiments of
Kashmiris,” the APHC leader said. In reply to another question he said, “Though Moulvi Umar Farooq had divulged his proposal a week ago, we have not received any response either from Delhi or from Islamabad so far.” While referring to the recent statement of Pakistan Foreign Minister in which he had stated that in case the Government of India permitted Hurriyat leaders to travel to Muzaffarabad from the Jehlum Valley Road then “we will allow mainstream politicians from Jammu and Kashmir to travel to Azad Kashmir,” Prof Bhat said “we welcome this statement. We want to visit Pakistan and Azad Kashmir to interact with political leaders of different shades.” He made it clear that in the interest of better relations between Delhi and Islamabad the “resumption of dialogue with the Government of India and start of talks with leaders in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir are necessary because we continue to be the main party in the dispute.” |

PoK bus: Mufti rejoices, NC
sulks
Jammu, April 10 While the Mufti was taking credit for reopening of the road, the Opposition National Conference (NC) activists were sulking, as their demand for restoration of the road link was not met during their regime. Although the Opposition was trying to downplay the event, but it is a fact that the Mufti has managed to make a place for himself in the hearts of the divided families and also a large section of Kashmiris by touching various emotional issues in the past three years. The families that were divided during partition of the country had virtually lost the hope of meeting their loved ones. However, the road link has created enthusiasm among the people who have started demanding that the other traditional routes with Pakistan should also be reopened. The NC had started raising the demand for reopening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in 1975 when Sheikh Abdullah returned to power in the state after 22 years. But that was not acceptable to the Centre and neither were the relations between India and Pakistan conducive for this purpose. Thereafter, the NC kept the issue on its political agenda. However, the Mufti, clinched the issue at an appropriate time when the Centre was taking various confidence-building measures for a lasting peace with Pakistan. The Mufti was also making sincere efforts for the return of the Kashmiri Pandit families that were hounded out of their homes due to terrorism in the Valley. |
