Seminar organised to mark World Health
Day
Chandigarh, April 7 “Donating blood is not harmful as it does not cause health problems. All healthy persons can donate blood at regular intervals. Blood is automatically formed in the body,” she said. She also spoke on thalassaemia. Earlier, City Mayor Anu Chatrath, who was the chief guest, made an appeal to all citizens to donate blood. She said if each healthy citizen donated blood once every six months, there would never be shortage of blood for needy patients. Speaking on adolescence, sex and sexuality, HIV/AIDS and safe blood, Dr S.K. Sandhu said the youth must realise the importance of safe sex. She also spoke on the general decline in parental supervision. She urged parents to take more interest in the activities of their children. Dr Vandana of the State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh, elaborated on AIDS, its diagnosis and treatment. Dr S.K. Garg spoke about polio eradication, importance of having birth and death certificates, while Mr Jagtar Singh Benipal, a regular donor, highlighted the role of panchayats in blood donations. S.S. Jogi, who has donated blood 58 times, also addressed and motivated the participants. Also, as many as 52 women attended a programme organised by the Society for Social Health (SOFOSH) to mark the World Health Day Dhanas colony today. Mr Kamalpreet Saini, president of the society, said women should take care of their health as they were more prone to anaemia and other ailments in comparison to men. |
Mobile dispensary flagged off
Chandigarh, April 7 The dispensary, project launched to mark the World Health Day, will visit UT sums, villages and colonies as per the programme. It will consist of a medical officer, a pharmacist, a medical intern and a group D employee to provide healthcare services. All essential medicines along with OPD cards will be made available to the patients attending the dispensary. The cards will be entertained by specialists in the OPDs of General Hospital, Sector 16, in case of referral investigation. UT Secretary, Health, S.C. Poddar, DHS Dr C.P. Bansal and Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr G. Dewan and Dr N.M. Sharma were also present. |

Chandigarh, April 7 The boys’ under-18 singles tie between Manav of Punjab and Kush Jagga of Delhi was well decided in favour of Manav at 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Mandeep Singh Gill of Chandigarh cruised past another local lad Abhiraj Singh in the finals of the boys’ under- 14 category at 7-6 (2), 6-3. In the girls’ final (singles) under- 14 section, Nandini Singh of Rajasthan gave Mehak of Chandigarh a straight set defeat at 6-4, 6-2. In the girls’ under-18 (doubles) final Mehak and Simar of Chandigarh toppled Arushi Sharma of Delhi and Nandini Singh of Rajasthan at 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Tanuj Keshwani and Pulkit Mishra of Delhi overcame a stiff challenge posed by another Delhiite pair Kush Jagga and Pankaj Kalsia and won the under-18 boys (doubles) tie at 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Mandeer S Gill and Digvijay Singh, Chandigarh pair, outplayed another Chandigarh duo Gaurav Inder Singh and Fateh S Ladhar and lift the doubles under-14 boys’ title. |
Pathak helps India win wrestling

Chandigarh, April 7 The three-day tournament started on April 2 and 19 teams from various countries, including Iran, Romania, Turkey, Russia and Tunisia, participated in the competition. Pathak accompanied the team along with three more
coaches. The team included 14 wrestlers from defence services, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Four coaches accompanied the team to Sophia. Pathak, an expert in free style wrestling, has been associated with the game since his childhood. He got training from Darshan Lal, noted wrestler and executive member of Wrestling Federation of India. Ajay visits the wrestling centre at Sector 42 for practice regularly. He also trains the budding grapplers there. Ajay expressed his satisfaction over the overall performance of the team in Sophia. He was all praise for the wrestlers of the team “who have potential to win the medals in Asian and Olympic games. The grapplers, who did not succeed to win the medals in the tournament, showed great performance and mettle in front of foreign wrestlers. So I am foreseeing a bright future for them in the reputed international events,” said Pathak. He is satisfied with the facilities being provided to wrestlers by government. “The government is doing well to promote this traditional game but the wrestlers need support and encouragement from the people and media as well,” he opined. Ajay lauded the efforts of Mr M.S. Malik, Director-General of Police, Haryana, and President of World Federation of India, who encouraged the game by providing all facilities as well as monetary help to the grapplers. |
Tennis talent tournament from April 11
Chandigarh, April 7 The tournament comprising singles and doubles events is open to boys and girls under 14 years and 14 to 16 years from any part of the country. Players having entries required to report at Lake Club for sign-in on April 8 from 12 noon to 2 pm and the results will be drawn immediately for the qualifying rounds to be played on April 9 and 10. The main championship will be held from April 11 at 9.00 a.m.

Chandigarh, April 7 SI Dalbir Singh, in charge Sector 22 police post, has been transferred to Burail police post, SI Pyare Lal from Burail police post to Police Lines and SI Dilsher Singh from Crime Branch to Sector 22 police post. Assistant Sub-Inspector Jaspal Singh has been transferred from Crime Branch to Sector 17 police station.
