Tribune News Service

Mohali, March 28
Dinesh Mongia, who has been relieved from the captaincy of India A, will lead the Punjab team in the Ranji Trophy final. The five-day final match between Punjab and the Railways will start on March 30 at the PCA ground here.

Sairaj Bahutule, captain of the Mumbai team, replaces Dinesh Mongia to lead the India A side that will play the Pakistani team in a one-day warm-up match in Hyderabad on March 30. Earlier, Mongia had been named captain, but he would now miss the game as its dates clashed with that of the Ranji Trophy final.

J.P. Yadav, medium-pacer from the Railways, will also miss the one-day match due to the same reason and play the final of the Ranji Trophy.

Meanwhile, both teams assembled in the stadium for net practice at 10 a m. The practice session culminated at 1 p m. The Punjab team practised under the supervision of Intikhab Alam, coach-cum-manager of the team, while Vinod Sharma, coach of the Railways’ team, directed his players at the practice session.

“The team is in high spirits after beating Mumbai in semifinal and is determined to win the trophy,” said Alam, who seemed delighted at the success of his team and gave credit to the self-confidence, mental toughness and hard work of Punjab players. “The key to success is self-confidence and ‘never give-up’ spirit, which I try to inculcate in my boys everyday,” Alam said.

He instructed the boys to improve technical skills as well as their fitness level. “The biggest challenge before any coach is to solve problems that the team or individual players face,” he said. He praised the skipper of the team, Dinesh Mongia, who did a good job and showed good captaincy. “As the Mohali stadium happens to be the home ground of some top players of the team, it will prove advantageous for the team,” he said.

Vinod Sharma, coach of the Railways, expressed satisfaction over the past performance of his team and termed it a balanced team. “We are a well-balanced side as we have three seamers and three spinners of international class, besides a good batting line-up. So, we have good chance of winning,” said Sharma.

The Railways’ team also has some international stars, including skipper Sanjay Bangar, Murali Kartik and J.P. Yadav besides Amit Pagnis, Harvinder Singh and Santosh Saxena. In the Punjab team, youngsters like Gagandeep Singh and latest pace bowling sensation V.R.V. Singh, besides established players like Mongia, Ravneet Rickey and Pankaj Dharmani will be the attraction.

India’s defeat lets down cricket fans
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, March 28
Cricket fans all over India and in this part of the country got utter disappointment when India went down tamely to Pakistan in the third and final test match in Bangalore. The sport, which is a sort of religion in the country, also gave shock and invited brick bats from its ardent supporters and viewers.

Mr Dinesh Kumar, a school headmaster, said, “Look at Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq and our captain Saurav Ganguly, with later proved to be a fiasco in all three tests as far as his batting and team efforts are concerned.” He said whenever the team was in danger, it was always the skipper who had to steer the team to victory, but it happened otherwise in case of Saurav who himself surrendered his batting. He said it would be better if the onus of Indian team be thrust in the hands of Rahul Dravid.

Mr Sanjeev Sharma, a Mohali-based businessman, said it was Indian bowling which failed on the last day of the first test match at Mohali when everyone predicted India’s win, but Pakistan managed to take it to a draw, but today, instead of making efforts to win, Indian batsmen did not take the match seriously and failed miserably. After winning the Kolkata test, the team should have given brave fight instead of losing with shame, he added.

Ms Kamaljeet Kaur, an executive and former woman cricket player, said Indians had world class batsmen and had hoped that with good batting pitch, reaching the target was not an impossible task.

She said it seemed that our batsmen were in a hurry to get out following poor performance by star batsmen like Sachin, Rahul and Saurav.

Mr Harcharan Singh, a bank employee, said it was remarkable on the part of Pakistan team which played in a cohesive manner. Kudos to Inzamam who became the first Pakistan captain to lead his team to victory in his 100th test match, he said.

The banker said if India could not perform on home turf which was easier than playing abroad, then how could we ever visualise India becoming super power in this most popular sport in the country.
