‘Attitude and way of life can overcome stress
Ludhiana, March 25 Dr Malhotra, who is on a visit to India on an invitation of the Medical Acupuncturists Association of India, was speaking at a seminar on ‘Management of depression and stress in daily life and drug addiction’ at Ludhiana Acupuncture Medical College and Dr Kotnis Acupuncture Hospital at Salem Tabri here on Thursday. He said in the USA, like many other developed nations, people were now following the way of meditation to cope with the daily stress whereas people in Indian had almost forgotten the natural way of life. He observed that depression and stress were not diseases and those could be overcome by way of our thinking and living. If left unmanaged, depression and stress could lead to many other diseases that could wreak havoc on the human beings. He was of the view that meditation, yoga and exercises like de-respiration could prove a great help in coping with depression and stress. Dr Malhotra, former chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey, in his remarks on drug addiction, said the affects of addictions varied from person to person. “We think alcoholism is not an addiction but most of the death of the victims are caused when the alcoholics are treated for detoxification. However, no such fatal phenomenon is noticed when similar detoxification treatment is given to addicts of cocaine or smack.” He specified various ways of detoxification being practised in the USA. Claiming that the acupuncture treatment had shown tremendous results in treating drug addicts, he said started in 1984 in the USA, acupuncture therapy had yielded encouraging results and it had now been recognised as a system of treatment in the country. Dr Inderjit Singh, Medical Superintendent, expressed his gratitude to the visiting specialist with the remarks that the drug de-addiction centre, which had been set up in the city seven years ago, had helped in treating hundreds of drug addicts. |
