The OPDs at the PGI would remain closed on March 26 on account of Holi.
The matter related to the functioning of the OPDs on other gazetted holidays is under consideration and the same would be notified shortly.

CM releases Sanjivani’s souvenir

Chandigarh, March 25
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh today released a souvenir brought out by Sanjivani — a voluntary organisation on the occasion of World TB Day.

The Chief Minister lauded Sanjivani’s crusade against tuberculosis that claims 5 lakh lives every year and 40 per cent of the Indian population was affected with it and over 22 lakh new patients get added to the list. He urged voluntary organisations to bring awareness amongst masses besides dispelling fears from their minds about such diseases as TB was 100 per cent curable.

Dr Pawan Sharma, Project Director, Sanjivani, thanked the Chief Minister for adopting three TB patients for treatment. He reiterated his resolves to eradicate TB. TNS

Chandigarh State Open Games conclude

Chandigarh, March 25
The First Chandigarh State Open Games - 2005 concluded at Sports Complex, Sector 7, here, yesterday. The games were organized in nine disciplines - Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Wrestling, Handball, Lawn Tennis & Table Tennis.

Mr S.K. Sandhu, Secretary Finance and Sports, UT, presided over the function and gave away the prizes to the 150 Winners, Runners-up and third position holders. There was a tremendous response to these games held under the aegis of Sports Department, U.T. Chandigarh for the first time.

The final results discipline-wise were:

Wrestling

50 kg: Jatinder, WCC, Sector-30 1st, Padam, SPS 2nd, Sarvind, Attawa 3rd.

55 kg: Narinder, Sports Complex 42 1, Suraj Parkash, SDC 2nd, Jagminder, Attawa 3rd.

60 kg: Ashwani, SDC 1st, Anil, WCC, Sector 30 3rd 2nd Sunil, SDC, Sector 32 3rd.

66 kg: Narinder, SDC, Sector 32 1st, Dharaminder, WCC, Sector 30 2nd, Gurdial, O.C.F 3rd.

Badminton

Men’s single: (final) Ashish Sharma beat Oscar 15-5, 15-6 Tripple Crown for Ashish men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Women’s singles: (final) Sharda beat Isha 11-6, 11-8

Men’s doubles: (final) Ashish & Robin beat Pankaj & Mandeep 15-8, 15-7.

Women doubles: (final) Sharda & Isha beat Seema & Akriti 15-9, 15-6.

Mixed doubles: Ashish & Bhawna beat Vikas and Isha 15-5, 15-9.

Table tennis

Women double semi final: Gurvinder Kaur and Amarpreet Kaur beat Ramnpreet and Taran preet (3-0) 11-8, 11-7, 11-6, Bhawna and Kalyani beat Sadhika and Arshdeep (3-2) 6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4.

Women double final: Amarpreet Kaur and Gurvinder Kaur beat Kalyani and Bhawana (3-2) 11-5, 11-13, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9.

Women single semi final: Amanpreet (MCM College) beat Ramanpreet (AKSIPS) (3-1) 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9.

Women single final: Gurvinder Kaur (AG Punjab) beat Amarpreet Kaur (4-1) 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-5, 15-13.

Men single final: Vikas (AG Punjab) beat Munish (PU)-(4-2), 11-6, 11-8, 15-17, 4-11, 11-8, 11-9.

Men doubles final: Vikash & Harish beat Sajal & Dheeraj (3-2), 11-7, 9-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-3.

Handball

Men final: Coaching Center GMSSS, Sector-19 (Team-A) beat Coaching Center Sector-42, (Team-B) by 39-34. Half time score was 16-14, Winners- Shiv Dyal-14, Sunil-8, Rakesh-7, Bunty-4, Salim-3, Runners- Davinder Negi-10, Harpreet Singh-9, Ranjit-7, Chander-3, Gursewak-3.

Women final: Coaching Center-42 (Team-A) beat Coaching Center GMSSS, Sector-19, (Team-A), Half time score 9-4, Final score 16-9, Highest goals scored by Rakesh-6, Kamni-5, Nirmala-3, Rooman-2. Kusum-4, Ravinder-3, Sushma-2.

Third position:

Coaching Center G.M.S.S.S., Sector 19 (Team-B) beat Coaching Center, Sector 42 (Team-B) by 45-23. Half time score was 21-14. Winner Bharat Bhushan-14, Nand Lal-8, Abishek-5, Birender-6, Sandeep-4, Abhimanyu & Yadwinder-3 each. Runners Munish-6, Amarjeet-6,Chinarva-3, Dharamvir-3, Harpal-2, Shyam Lal-2.

Women section - 3rd position: Coaching Center Sector 42 Team-B.

Gymnastics Aerobics

Men singles: Chetan Singh, Sports Complex-7, First (13.50), Bhupinder, ITBP, Second (12.90), Rakesh, ITBP, Third (8.20).

Women singles: Ishani, Sports Complex-7, First (11-80), Nazma, Sports Complex-7, Second (8.20), Kumari Ritu, Behlana, Chandigarh , Third (7.40)

Men’s single (semi final): Shaulin beat Akash Sharma, 6-4, Gursewak beat Pardeep, 6-2.

Men’s single (final): Shaulin beat Gursewak 6-1, 6-3.

Men’s double (semi final): Izveek and Raj Kanwar beat Pardeep and Rupinder, 6-4, Gursewak and Vikash beat Parul and Shaulin, 6-3.

Men’s doubles final: Izveek and Raj Kumar beat Gursewak and Vikas, 8-5.

Women singles (semi final): Mehak beat Ikteesh 6-0, Mrignaynee beat Harnoor, 6-1.

Women singles (final): Mehak beat Mrignayanee, 6-2.

Volleyball Men

In the men section of Volleyball A.G. Punjab got first place in the Chandigarh Open Games. A.G. Punjab beat SGGS College-26, 25-0, 22-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-12 (3-2), Both the teams for the every time at last A.G. Punjab take their experience advantage and won the match narrowly. Third position got by Sports Complex, Sector-46 beating GMHS, Sector-26, 25-10, 25-14, 25-8 (3-0).

Women

In the Women section SAI-18 got the first position, they beat GGS College-26 by 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 (3-0). Nisha Chauhan of SAI Center played very well, she shows very good attacking and block. Third position was retained by the Sports Complex, Sector-46 defeating GMHS-26 by 25-8, 25-10, 25-11 (3-0).

Basketball

Men: C.R.P.F. (I), Athletic Club-7(II), DAV Club-8 (III) C.R.P.F. defeated Athletic Club, Sector-7 by 76-63, Half time Score was 39-24, Main scorer for winner Sanjay Singh-16, Sunder Singh-14, Asfaq Khan-14, Mohinder-13, Satish Kumar-8 points each for Looser-Jaldeep Dhaliwal-30, Mandeep-12, Harminder Singh-11 points. Third place goes to DAV Club Sector-8, Chandigarh .

Women: Sports Complex, Sector-46 (I), PU Campus Club (II), Sacred Heart School-26 (III). Sports Complex, Sector-46 win Narrow Margin by one point in last second and that time score was 53-55 but in the final score come 56-55 in favour of Sports Complex-46, Main scorer were Kiran Dhillon-35, Prabhjot-14, Sumeet-4, for Looser side Mandeep Brar-35, Shweta-6, Pushp-6, Ranjeeta Rana-4 points each. Sacred Heart school got third position.

Athletics

5000 metre men final: Hans Raj, DAV-10 (17.14.41 minutes) Mohinder Singh, Chandigarh police (18.37.50 minutes) Jatinder Singh, State Bank of Patiala (18.54.05 minutes).

100 metre men final: Jaswinder Singh, BSNL (11.25 sec.), Kuldeep Singh, SGGS-26 (11.47 Sec.) Jaspal Singh, C.C.E.T.-26 (11.55 sec.).

100 metre women final: Pawandeep Kaur, SAI-18 (13.22 sec.), Reena, SAI-18 (13.42 sec.) Talwinder Kaur, Sports Complex-46 (13.63 sec.).

Georgians relive old times

Chandigarh, March 25
It was a great day for Georgians who assembled at the Lake Club to take part in the Servo- Georgian Car Rally. The Georgians Association (North) which is an association of ex-students of Military Schools (erstwhile King George’s Schools) meet after every six months and organise an activity said Col Amrik Singh, vice-president of the association.

More than 40 cars were flagged off by Major General Bachittar Singh, PVSM, which left for Chail via Panchkula, Pinjore, Kalka, Solan and Kandaghat. At Chail, where a Military School is located, the rallyists and their families will stay overnight and attend a function to be held tomorrow. The theme of the rally was ‘Save the Deodar’ and posters depicting this environmental message was displayed all along the route.

Lieut Colonel D.S. Grewal, president of the association, said more than 200 members gathered today and even Georgians from USA, Germany and Delhi converged today for the event.

Mr Baljit Singh who passed out in 1967 and is based in Munich, Germany, said he came to Chandigarh last October and was eagerly waiting for this day. Another NRI and Georgian Vijay Khosla based in Los Angeles and from 1968 batch said it is realy fantastic when we met our old pals. Ajit Singh Dev, Lalit Kaul,Sunil Kapoor were among others who had come from Delhi for this get together.

Mr Kaul said they are planning to invite the Georgians from Military School, Jhelum (Pakistan). The school at Chail was donated by then Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh, said Col Amrik Singh. He said Lieut General R.S. Dayal is their patron while General Hari Prashad, General Natarajan, both serving officers were also Georgians.

At present there are six Military Schools in India — at Chail, Jalandhar, Bangalore, Ajmer, Dholpur and Belgaum.

Amartex cricket club tourney tomorrow

Bedi Cricket Club will take on Bharat Cricket Club on March 27 in the final match of the Amartex Cricket Cup being organised by the Panchkula District Cricket Association.

The match will be played at JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Village Naggal (near Barwala), Panchkula. Mr Chander Mohan, Deputy Chief Minister, Haryana will be the Chief Guest on the occasion.

J.S. Bir is CITCO MD

Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, a Punjab cadre IAS officer of the 1989 batch, was appointed Managing Director of the Chandigarh Industrial Tourism Corporation last night. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs faxed the appointment to the Chandigarh Administration.

Mr Bir has worked in key positions including Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Jalandhar, Commissioner of MC Amritsar, Deputy Commissioner Patiala, and Director, Public Relations.

At present he is working as Special Secretary, Finance.

Sites for garbage collection

Chandigarh, March 25
The Commissioner, municipal corporation, has designated two sites in Sector 17, one near the Anand Complex building and the other between Punjab Udhyog Bhavan and Centre Revenue building, for Sehaj Safai Kendras for the disposal of household garbage.

The garbage bins earlier placed at various locations in Sector 17 have been removed and the sector has been declared as garbage bin-free sector. The residents, shopkeepers, hoteliers of Sector 17 were requested to deposit the waste of their respective establishments in the garbage bins placed at the sehaj safai kendras. TNS

The Apni Mandi held every Monday in Sector 46 has been shifted to Sector 45. The day will remain the same and this Mandi will be second one in Sector 45 which already has a Mandi on Thursday.
