Machhiwara, March 19
Many students who did not receive their result cards have flayed the Panjab University authorities for sending these important documents through UPC instead of registered post. “Why does the university charge a huge fee if it can not send the certificates through registered post,” asks Davinder Kaur, a students.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune she said she had appeared in the BA III Exam under roll no. 64871 in April 2004. “I was put on the waiting list for three months after the declaration of the result,” she said. “But when I did not get my result card, I visited Panjab University where I was told that my card had been sent by UPC. On contacting the local postal employees I was informed that the post office did not keep any record about the delivery of letters sent through UPC”.

She further revealed that she visited the university again and was asked to apply for duplicate result card. “I became so disappointed that neither did I apply for my post graduation course nor did I feel the necessity for applying for a duplicate certificate”, she added.

Gurdial Singh’s statue unveiled
Our Sports Reporter

Ludhiana, March 19
In memory of Gurdial Singh, former international basketball player who had won laurels for the country, a statue was installed at his ancestral Gurhe village, tehsil Jagraon, in this district yesterday. Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP, Punjab, and president, Basketball Federation of India, formally unveiled the statue of Gurdial Singh, an Arjuna awardee, popularly known as ‘Bhaiya’.

Mr Gill urged the people to encourage their children to take part in this game as it was only because of Gurdial Singh’s achievements that this village was famous across the country. He said the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) was pursuing an ambitious plan to spot extraordinary tall boys and girls from the rural areas of the state, enroll them with the Baba Lodhiana Basketball Academy being run in Ludhiana, and prepare them to be cagers of national and international repute.

Mr Gill further said that the PBA had chalked out a plan to start a Punjab basketball league tournament and also conduct matches between Punjab teams of India and the neighbouring country, Pakistan. This would improve the standard of the game in this region of the country, he added.

“There was a dearth of sponsors for the eves teams in this region. This was the main reason that the girls’ team continued to give a poor performance during the past two decades or so, Mr Gill rued. However, we are trying to contact the PSEB, the Railways, private sector banks and other big business houses to recruit promising girls so that they are not bothered about their future, he said.
