The department has started the registration and screening of patients. Those found fit to be operated would be given a choice to get operated by the visiting doctors. Interested patients should contact room number 3208, level III, Block B, at the hospital in person or on telephone numbers 0172-2665253, extension -2311, 0172-2624402 and cellphone: 94170-37844, 9872881962.

Brisk walk good for backache: expert
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 16
A daily brisk walk of 30 minutes is enough to avoid straining of the back muscles. However, the reluctance of most persons to perform this ‘easy’ task leads to problems of lower backache, which are rising each day. Doctors say that in a majority of the cases, people do ‘walk’ for half an hour but at such a leisurely pace that the entire purpose of the walk is defeated, with it making hardly any contribution to the person’s health.

“If you do not sweat after a walk of half an hour, then the muscles are not toned up enough. The walk then does not solve much of a purpose,” said Prof V.K. Khosla, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the PGI.

Linking sudden backache with any activity like lifting of weight too may be a misplaced thought as in most of such cases there is no physical activity by the patients who later on complain of the lower back aches.

“The patients try to link the starting of the problem to some activity that they have performed recently, including lifting of weights, etc but the truth is that the muscles do not remain toned up due to proper exercise and such problems arise,” said Prof Khosla.

Equally crucial is the wearing of comfortable shoes, as “high heel shoes” too contribute to the ache in the lower back. The idea is to have no strain on the back muscles.

Excess body weight too creates imbalance and leads to the problem of backache. “Obese people are highly prone to low back ache problems as the body balance gets disturbed as the protruding stomach becomes heavier for the spine to support,” explained the doctor.

A bad posture and sedentary life style are the common factors responsible for damaging the back along with the intake of unhealthy diet.

Most of the trauma cases that we get at the PGI are related to injury of the spinal cord, that requires immediate medical care. Extreme pain or pressure in the neck, head or back and the tingling or loss of sensation are the important signs of injury to the spinal cord which are among the most common injuries in the accident victims. Both the spinal cord and the severe head injuries require the initiation of the treatment in the golden hour, that is, within the first six hours of the accident.

Protect yourself from lower back ache by….

  • Going for a brisk walk for at least 30 minutes daily.
  • Regular but not severe physical exercise.
  • Wearing comfortable shoes and avoiding high heels.
  • Shedding the excessive body weight and with intake of a healthy diet.
  • Maintaining a good body posture and avoid prolonged sitting.

Admn to send villagers’ team to Hyderabad
Rajmeet Singh
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 16
‘The path to rural development is through self-governance’. Riding high on the slogan, the Chandigarh Administration has decided to educate villagers on empowering the Panchayati Raj system.

Under a programme, a 50-member delegation, comprising representatives from 18 villages, is being sent to the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad. Women panchayat members would also be part of the delegation.

During the nine-day training programme, beginning from March 25, the members would attend classes on rural development, ways to empower the Panchayati Raj Act, self-governance, hygiene, cleanliness and maintenance of panchayat property. The members would also be shown a model of the subject.

Deputy Commissioner Arun Kumar told Chandigarh Tribune that the delegation would have at least one member each from all the 18 villages. Members of the Panchayat Samiti and the Zila Parishad would also form part of the group.

Though the Administration would be bearing all travelling expenses of the team, Rs 500 was being taken as a refundable security.

The programme would be a prelude to an earlier decision taken by the administration to honour the best village on the eve of the Republic Day.

A cash reward of Rs 2 lakh would be given for the development of the village that would be adjudged the best.

The selection of the village would be on the basis of sanitation, cleanliness, peaceful resolution of disputes, running of library, youth club, mahila mandal and promotion of sports activities, conservation of soil and water, afforestation, enrolment in schools, income-generating activities, identification of talent, removal of encroachments and maintenance of panchayat property.

Correspondence with samiti in Punjabi

Deputy Commissioner Arun Kumar has accepted the demand of the Panchayat Samiti members for the use of Punjabi. He said along with English, correspondence with the samiti and the Zila Parishad would be done in Punjabi.

Recently the 15-member Panchayat Samiti had passed a resolution demanding Punjabi as the official language to communicate with the Administration. The decision would improve the communication between the members and the officials of the Administration, said Mr Didar Singh, Chairman of the samiti.
