APPOINTED: Dr Jaspal Singh has been appointed as the Head of Department of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy Department of Guru Nanak Dev University, the Vice-Chancellor told The Tribune on Sunday.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY: J.K.M. International School here on Sunday celebrated grandparents day. A draft for Rs 11,000 was sent to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund by the school committee chairman. Four students who had won the Holy Faith National Award were honoured. The students are Satish, Abhinav Bhatia, Harish and Shreya Kuthiala.

POPPY HUSK SEIZED:
The SSP, Jalandhar, Mr Satish Kumar Asthana, has announced to honour Goraya Muncipal Committee president Kamaljit Singh Bittu, who helped the police in seizing 220 quintals of poppy husk. Bittu came to know about the arrival of two trucks laden with poppy husk on Sunday night. He immediately rushed to nab them, but the smugglers attacked him and managed to escape. He later informed the police which impounded the trucks and seized 220 quintals of poppy husk.

CHEQUES given: Phillaur MLA Ch Santokh Singh distributed cheques for Rs 7.5 lakh to six village panchayats for their development here on Monday. The SDM, Mr Surinder Mohan Sharma, Phillaur Market Committee chairman Dr Rakesh Sharma, and Nagar Council president Narinder Goyal were also present on the occasion. He gave Rs 2.5 lakh to village Gannapind, Rs 1.5 lakh to village Kang-Jagir, Rs 2 lakh to village Takhan Mazara, and Rs 50,000 each to village Palpota and Nurewal for their development.

OFFICE-BEARERS: The following have been elected heads of various wings of the local unit of the Tarksheel Society: Mr Param Ved (organisation); Mr Chamkaur Singh (finance); Mr Krishan Singh (bi-monthly magazine); Mr Hardev Singh Rathi (psychiatry); and Mr Gurpreet Singh Deh Kalan (media and propaganda).

CAMP: About 250 patients were examined at a health awareness and free homoeopathy medical check up camp, organised by the local Scientific Awareness and Social Welfare Forum, at Majhi village, near Bhawanigarh, on Sunday. Free medicines were also given to the patients.

SYMPOSIUM: A discussion on “Mental stress and human beings” was organised by the local Scientific Awareness and Social Welfare Forum here on Sunday. Dr A.S.Azad, SMO, Bhawanigarh Civil Hospital, and Dr Kuldip Singh Mann, Assistant Professor, Physics, SLIET, Longowal, were the main speakers. Dr A.S.Mann, president of the Forum, Prof Jagdev Singh Sohi, Prof Raj Bala, Advocate Mr Kiranjit Singh Sekhon and Prof Santokh Kaur took part in the discussion.
