Sportspersons honoured

Chandigarh, March 14
The annual sports awards function of the local DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, was organised today on the college campus where 95 players of the college who had won various positions in the Panjab University Inter-college Championships in 2003-2004 were honoured. The college also won Sir Shadi Lal Trophy for general excellence in sports in PU for the 34th year in succession. This year 56 players of the college represented PU in the inter university while 45 played in various national championships.

The college won inter-college meet in athletics, archery, basketball, cross country, gymnastics, lawn tennis, relay races, softball, swimming, table tennis and water polo.

South Asian Federation (SAF) Games medallist Puneet Rana, a swimmer of this college, created two new records by winning two gold medals at All-India Inter-Varsity Championships.

He also won three gold medals in the Senior National Swimming Championship. Other sportspersons who achieved laurels during the year included Nand Lal ( handball), Gaurav and Jagdeep (both rowing), Vikas, Herwinder (athletics) and Jaswant (best physique)

Principal S. Marriya said at present the college was running two sports academies in cricket and gymnastics.

Mr D.S. Mangat, DPI, Colleges, UT Administration, gave away the prizes to the sportspersons of the 
college.

Minerva in last four

Chandigarh, March 14
Minerva Academy moved into the semifinals of the 11th Prudential Cricket Cup by beating Bharat XI by 20 runs in the tie played on the grounds of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 27.

Winning the toss and electing to field first, Bharat XI gave a good bowling performance by bowling out Minerva Academy for just 103 runs in 20 overs. Karan Kherwal made a brisk 30 runs and got good support from Harish Garg and Sunny Behl who made 21 and 22 runs, respectively. Punjab Ranji bowler Navdeep Singh picked up three wickets and Ajay Bhardwaj also able to bag three wickets.

Bharat XI were bowled out for just 84 runs in 19.3 overs.

Minerva Academy Cricket Club: 103 all out in 20 overs (Karan Kherwal 30, Harish Garg 21, Sunny Behl 22, Navdeep Singh 3 for 24, Ajay Bhardwaj 3 for 23. Bharat XI: 84 runs all out in 19.3 overs (Umesh Kashyap 34, Sunny Behl 5 for 20, Harish Garg 3 for 21).

Landran engineering college students excel

Chandigarh, March 14
Students of Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran, near Mohali bagged five medals including three gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal in the annual Punjab Technical University Inter College Weightlifting (men) championship which concluded at Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana yesterday. Mr Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman of the college, while lauding the achievements of the medal winenrs said they would be suitably honoured. He also complimented the coach Mr Kamaldeep Singh.

The gold medallists are, Damandeep Samra (77kg), Bikram Singh Sandhu (94 kg), Varinder Rajput (105 kg). Amandeep Cheema bagged the silver medal in the 105 kg category while Aman Rajput got the bronze medal in 94 kg.

J.S. Aroura and Col G.S. Hundal clinched the Captain’s Day above-70 scramble title at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today. In the Captain’s Day team event the twosome of Dr G.S. Sandhu and H.C. S. Dhaliwal were the winners. Jaishree Thakur and Jaideep S. Grewal finished first runner-up and Nirmaljit S. Gill and Cdr G.V. Singh were placed at the second runner-up spot.

5 Inspectors shifted

Chandigarh, March 14
The Inspector General of the Chandigarh Police, Mr Rajesh Kumar ordered transfers of five Inspectors of the Chandigarh police today.

Inspector Prem Singh Malik has been transferred from Sector 19 police station to Sector 39 police station, Inspector Ram Gopal from the Economic Offences Wing to Sector 19 police station, Inspector Ishwar Singh Mann to Economic Offences Wing from Security, Inspector Hardev Singh from Sector 39 police station to quarter Master in Police Lines, Sector 26 and Inspector Shiv Raj Singh Sidhu from Traffic Police to Security.
