60 teachers attend seminar

Ludhiana, March 13
A seminar for elementary teachers and volunteers has been going on in Government Elementary School, Lakkar Bazaar, since March 10 and will continue till March 19. The seminar is going in accordance with directions of DIET, Jagraon, under the block resource persons (BRP). Every day around 60 teachers attend the seminar.

The resource persons for the seminars are Mr Kamaljit Singh from Mandchaunta, Mr Sanjiv Kumar from Machion Kala, Sarabjit Kaur, Lalton Khurd, Sukhminder Kaur, Shimla puri, and Veena Katoria, Lalton Kalan.

Various topics were discussed and skills were shown to improve teaching abilities. The BRPs delivered talks on AIDS, pollution, adult education, health, and discipline. The teachers received training in teaching learning material (TLM) and in minimum level of learning (MLL).

Teachers threaten stir

Ludhiana, March 13
The Union of Highly Qualified Teachers held an emergency meeting in Chattar Singh Park here today. Mr Rajinder Singh, president, of the Union addressed the teachers who had come from Ludhiana and other districts of Punjab to attend the meeting. General Secretary of the Union, Basant Lal Sharma, talked about the exploitation of teachers by the government.

Mr Rajinder Singh said the government issued an anti-govt teacher and employee notice in October, 2004. Since then they have been protesting against the anti-teacher stance of the government. The meeting decided that if the government did not withdraw this notice, the government should get ready to fight a long legal battle.

Rishi adjudged Miss Farewell

The students of the Department of Computer Science and Applications, Arya College bade farewell to outgoing students of BCA-III, M Sc (IT)-II and PGDCA. Function was inaugurated by the lighting lamp by Prof K.K. Aggarwal. First half of the function had welcome speech by Prof Ms Annu Sharma followed by a tribute to Late Prof J.K. Bhandari by Mohit Grover, a student of MSc (IT)-II.

Students of PGDCA and MSc (IT)-I performed Bhangra and Western Dance respectively. Bhangra played by students of PGDCA and MSc (IT) stole the show. There was a tough competition between the contestants for Mr and Miss Farewell. Damsels replied in a very sensible way to the questions asked by judges.

The panel of judges announced the most awaited part of the show i.e. announcement of Mr Farewell, Mr personality and Ms farewell, Miss personality titles. As judges announced the names of Rishi (PGDCA) as Miss farewell, Rishu (PGDCA) as Miss personality, Amit Bansal (Ms-II) as Mr Farewell, Jitender Singh (BCA-III) as Mr personality, the entire hall clapped. The show was managed by Prof Vishal Sood and Prof Vivek Thapar and was compared by Amit and Shilpa.

First prize was given to Shaadi Ka Ladoo, by Prof Anil Sharma and performed by M.Sc (IT)-II, Second prize was bagged by PGDCA Bhangra and M Sc (IT)-I Giddha, third prize was won by BCA -I mobile skit.

Birth centenary celebrations: Birth Centenary of Devki Devi Jain was celebrated here today at DD Jain Memorial College for Women. The programme started with Namaskar Mantra. The members of the managing committee- Mr Prem Chand, Mr Hiralal Jain, Mr Narinder Kumar Jain, Mr Prem Sagar, Mr Sushil Kumar, Mr Subhash Chander were extended a welcome by the principal.

The sacred book of Acharya Samrat Mr Atma Ram, ‘Bhagwati Sutra ‘(Vol I and Vol VI) translated and edited by Mr Amar Muni was released and one copy each was presented to all the Jain sadhus and sadhvis present there. Another book ‘Amar Prerna’ was also released.

Mr S.C. Karnavat, Vice President All-India Jain Conference unfurled the flag, symbol of Jain religion. The symbol of Indian culture, Director of first famous religious serial on TV, ‘Ramayana,’ Mr Ramanand Sagar’s son Mr Subhash Sagar attended the function and paid rich tribute to Devki Devi Jain. Mr Vijay Chopra lauded efforts of the Jain Samaj and Devki Devi Jain. He also released ‘Atam Path,’ a journal on Jain religion.

Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, Municipal Corporation inaugurated ‘Devki Fitness Centre’. Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, attended the function and assured college authorities with all help in the construction of college hall.

Vegetarian food good for heart: expert

Human beings getting smarter and technically savvy with the introduction of hi-tech equipment and technology in everyday life. Efficient means of communication and easy and faster availability of goods have their own ill side effects.

In the backdrop that the business and executive class is one of the more affected stratum of heart patients, the Ludhiana Management Association (LMA) organised a talk on having a ‘smart heart’ by inviting a famous cardiac surgeon, Dr H.S. Bedi, here last evening.

Mr V.K. Goyal, general secretary of the association, set the tone of the talk by stating that almost 50 million Indians were suffering from heart ailments which was roughly 5 per cent of the country’s population and the number was likely to double in five to seven years.

Dr Bedi told the audience that the disease had assumed alarming proportions especially in the younger age group and every four minutes a person was dying in India due to this. Dr Bedi is the head at Sigma Heart Institute and has done pioneering work in heart surgery technology.

He gave an interesting presentation on the subject with graphics and data. He said more and more younger people were coming for heart treatment to centers all over the world and this was due to a changing lifestyle and stress generated due to this. Dr Bedi asked people to make changes in their lifestyles to prevent the occurrence of the disease. He said with advancements in the means of communication and transportation, human beings had become very sedentary and did not have to exert much. This resulted in accumulation of fat in the arteries. To make matters worse, people were getting addicted to all kinds of junk food which was making teenagers obese and prone to heart diseases a young age.

To fight this menace to human life, Dr Bedi reiterated the importance of balanced diet and physical exercise. He stressed the fact that to have a healthy heart, one should prefer vegetarian food with minimal oils as vegetarian food was best suited to the human anatomy. According to him, one must burn the extra calories which one may consume while indulging.

He advised that in the present competitive era, it was not possible to avoid stress unless one became a saint or a hermit. Therefore, one should learn to cope with stress by controlling it. A positive attitude, good family values, a peaceful and an unhurried lifestyle combined with regular exercise were the factors by which one could prevent the menace. He asked people to cultivate a hobby and make friends, as these were great stress-busters. Meditation and travelling relieved one’s mind of stress. He said drinking and smoking, coupled with their factors explained, were the major causes of deaths due to heart ailments.

He answered queries from many members of the LMA and stressed that regular check-ups were necessary after the age of 40.

Medical camps in city

Ludhiana, March 13
A team of heart specialists from Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, led by Dr H.S. Pannu, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, conducted a cardiac camp exclusively for members of the Sutlej Club here today. More than 200 persons were examined for heart conditions and diagnostic tests like ECG and echocardiography were conducted free of cost.

Giving details, Dr Pannu said more than half of the club members, examined during the camp were found to be suffering from some kind of heart ailment and they were advised on follow up treatment as well as required change in dietary habits and lifestyle.

Dr Puneet Verma, Dr Maninder and Dr Vipin, were among other doctors in the team.

In another medical education camp organised at Ramgarhia Girls College on Saturday, Dr R.S. Nanda, skin specialist, apprised the students and staff member of various skin diseases and their treatment. He focused on general skin problems like acne, dandruff, blemishes and pigmentation.

Dr Nanda observed that these problems were caused due to neglect in taking proper care and maintaining hygiene skin. The camp was organised especially for cosmetology students of the Department of Home Science in the college. The Principal, Ms Harmit Kaur, thanked to Dr Nanda for making the students aware of various skin problems.

In yet another multi-speciality medical check up camp organised by Ludhiana Cultural and Social Welfare Club at Government Polytechnic for Women here today, over 1,400 persons were given a free medical check up by a team of 15 medical specialists. According to project in charge Dr Sandeep Chauhan clinical tests like x-ray and scanning were conducted free of cost and medicines were also distributed among the patients, free of cost.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr Jagtar Singh, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, New Delhi, while Mr Gurinder Singh Atwal, MLA, was the chief guest.

DMCH emerges overall winner

It was a proud moment for the winners of NOZIT- 2005 Sports Festival organised by the Sports Council of the local Dayanand Medical College and Hospital which concluded here yesterday. They received prizes from none other than veteran athlete Flying Sikh Milkha Singh.

Hosts DMCH emerged as the overall winners in this three-day sports event in which participants from major medical colleges of the north zone took part in the indoor games such as chess, table tennis, carrom, badminton and tennis ball cricket. Exhibiting great gesture, the hosts passed on the winner’s trophy to Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College, Ludhiana, which finished runners up.

Students of the DMCH presented a colourful cultural extravaganza on the occasion.

Dr Daljit Singh, Principal of the DMCH, delivered the welcome address and Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Medical Superintendent and Chairman, Sports Council, DMCH, introduced the chief guest to the audience and read out the NOZIT report. Mr Prem Gupta, acting secretary and Mr Satish Sanwalka, treasurer, Managing Society, Dr J. Whig, Vice-Principal, Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent, Dr G.S. Bajwa, Convenor, Dr P.S. Nain, Secretary, Dr Deepinder, Dr Hitant Vohra, Dr Harpal along with members of the sports council also graced the occasion for the encouragement of students.

Milkha Singh gave away the prizes to the position holders. In his speech, Mr Milkha Singh left the audience spellbound. Sharing great experiences of his illustrated career, Milkha Singh urged the students to rise up and make country proud by excelling in sports. He said that it was a matter of great regret that in the past 50 years, the country has failed to produce another Milkha Singh.

He appreciated the efforts of the DMCH of promoting sports by organising various competitions like NOZIT every year and hoped that it would go a long way in inculcating a sports culture among medical students. He emphasised that India needed to strengthen the training part by starting sports academies where training should be given by the Army with discipline and strictness otherwise it was difficult to produce players of substance. While quoting the example of China, he said till 1958 China was no where on the scene but with specialised and commitment, they had now touched great heights, which was evident in recent Athens Olympics.

BBF XI enter semifinal

Ludhiana, March 13
Chinton Sehgal’s unbeaten knock of 67 runs, routed of routed Rana Club by seven wickets to enter the semi finals of the 12th Veera Devi and 2nd Madan Lal Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the FTI Club at the Tajpur Road ground here today.

Batting first, Rana Club were shot out for 111 runs in 21 overs. The main contributors were Karan Goel (22), Inderjit Singh (16) and Sanjeev Rawat (26 n.o). For BBF XI, Varun was the pick of bowlers who took three for 19 while Ashish grabbed two for 23 and Mohit Mangal claimed 2 for two.

BBF XI’s batsmen faced no resistance from Rana Club bowlers as they romped home victorious in the 19th overs after losing just three wickets. Chinton Sehgal remained unbeaten on 67 while Ajay scored 22 and Anil made 19. For the losers, Sanjay took two wickets for 19 runs and Karan scalped one victim for 23 runs.

In another match, Municipal Corporation XI registered 39-run win over PAU Employees XI to secure a berth in the last eight stage.

In reply to Municipal Corporation XI’s 178 for 8, PAU Employees XI were defeated for 139 runs with two ball to spare.
