Conference on paediatric care

Chandigarh, March 13
The Chandigarh chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics organised its tenth annual conference at the advanced paediatric centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh today.

The meeting was attended by nearly 100 delegates from the region.

Prof K.L.N. Rao discussed about the problems of children and its simple treatment.

A team of experts comprising Dr Suarabh Dutta, PGI, Dr Arun Baranwal, GMCH and Dr Mahesh Hiranandani discussed the role of safe transport and supportive therapies in newborns having respiratory problems. This was followed by a few tips on management of patients with convulsions (epileptic fits).

Later on the Director, PGI, Prof K.K. Talwar presented lifetime achievement awards to doyens of child health care of this region. Those awarded were Prof B.N.S. Walia, Prof I.C. Pathak, Prof O.N. Bhakoo and Prof Saroj Mehta.

Yoga camp concludes

Chandigarh, March 13
The three-day yoga camp organised by the Chandigarh unit of Gayatri Parivar, Shantikunj, Haridwar, concluded here today with a “deep yagya”. Women lighted over 200 lamps to pray for the welfare of all. Over 300 persons participated in the camp and have benefited from it.

Participants at the camp were asked to demonstrate various asanas that they have learnt in the past fortnight. Students from Dev Sanskriti Vishwvidyalaya, Priyanka Rai, Preet Tonk, Savita Gupta and Vinita Singh, who conducted the programme gave a pravachan focusing on ‘Health and value education’.

Books about Gayatri Sadhana and related topics, ayurvedic medicines like triphala churna, harad, beheda, amla, yashtimadhu, arjun churna, Ashwagandha, punarnava, nirgundi, tej patra, giloy (Amrita) etc. prepared at Shantikunj, books on yoga, etc. were kept for sale on the occasion.

Bedi Cricket Club enters final

Panchkula, March 13
A superb batting display by Ajay Disodia (46) and a superb spell of bowling by left arm spinner Kulbir Singh (3 for 36)enabled Bedi Cricket Club beat JR Institute of Cricket Academy in the second semi-final match by 10 runs to enter the final of the Amartex Cricket Cup being organised by the Panchkula District Cricket Association at Barwala today.

After winning the toss, Bedi Cricket Club batted first, but lost opener Kulbir Singh in the very first over of the innings. Then came a partnership of 42 runs between Vineet Soni and Ajay Disodia. Bedi Cricket Club put up a total of 180 all out in 48.4 overs. Roobal Kalpil was the most successful bowler for JR Institute with 3 for 39.

Chasing the modest total, JR Institute too were in trouble in the beginning as opener Sunny Sharma and Mandeep Singla got out easily. But in the end they were all out for 170.

Brief scores : Bedi Cricket Club-180 all out in 48.4 overs (Vineet Soni 35, Ajay Disodia 46, Kailash Sanwal 27, Pawan Grewal 24, Rakesh Purang 19. Roobal Kapil 3 for 39, Surender Singh 2 for 20, Karan Malik 2 for 26.

JR Institute- 170 all out in 49.1 overs (Vishal Sahni 33, Nitin Mehtani 34, Umesh Kaira 37 n.o., Tejwinder Gill 17, Roobal Kapil 15. Kulbir Singh 3 for 36, Dinesh Bakshi 2 for 28.

The final tie will be played on March 27.

Judo meet results

On the second day of the ongoing Senior National Judo Championships, played here today at the Skating Rink, Sector 10, Kiran Negi of Chandigarh bagged the bronze medal in the below-57 kg category in the women’s section. Rajiv Kumar of Chandigarh also won pride of place by winning the bronze medal in the below 66 kg in men’s section.

In this weight category, L Mirupama of the CRPF won the gold medal, while Harpreet secured the silver medal. Other winners are women: below 52 kg-Anshu (CISF); below 63 kg:L Brojeshwari (Assam).

Men; below 66 kg: Santoshmane(Mah);below 73 kg:Virender Singh (ITBP); below 81 kg: Vinod Solanki (AIPSCB).

Other results: women: below 44 kg:Tombi Devi (CRPF) 1, Archana (Har) 2, Ranjeet Kaur (Pb) and S Uma Rani (Mpr) 3.

Below 70 kg: Landoni (CRPF)1, Sapna (Asm) 2, Sangeeta (MP) and Kiran (Har) 3.

Athletics meet ends

Dera Bassi, March 13
Sikanderjeet Singh and Tanu Aggarwal were adjudged the best athletes for year 2005 among boys and girls, respectively, in the seventh annual sports meet of Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi, that concluded here today.

Amandeep Singh Saini, a student of mechanical engineering (IV year) was adjudged the best sportsman of the year while Ketan Kumar remained the overall performer.

Mr Manmohan Kumar Sharma, DSP, Dera Bassi, who was the chief guest, gave away prizes to the winners. He exhorted the students to participate in the extra-curricular activities, besides studies.

Mr Avtar Singh, Chairman, Sri Sukhmani Groups of Institute, inaugurated the meet on March 11. He said that landscaping of the play grounds would be further improved shortly. He advised the students to make the best use of the indoor and outdoor facilities at the institute.

Dr Y.P. Gupta, Principal of the institute, proposed a vote of thanks.

PEC team beat PFC

Belligerent knocks by Rajesh Arora (62 n.o.) and Satish Chaudhary (61) enabled the team of Punjab Engineering College Employees Sports’ Association to beat Punjab Financial Corporation in the finals of XI th PEC-Inter Institutional Cricket Tournament being played at the PEC cricket grounds here today.

Satish Chaudhary of PEC-XI was adjudged Man of Match as well as Man of the Series.

The chief guest Dr Vijay Gupta, Director, PEC, distributed the prizes.

Brief Scores: PFC-XI: 158 all out in 28.5 overs (Dharma Deepak 32, Pankaj 31, Satish Chaudhary 4 for 18)

PEC-XI: 161 for 2 in 26.1 overs (Rajesh Arora 62 n.o., Satish Chaudhary 61, Naveen 2 for 26).

Conference on yoga from March 19

In order to popularise yoga in a more effective manner, the Indian Yoga Federation (IYF) in collaboration with the Department of Ayush, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is going to organise a National Conference on Yoga and Naturopathy on March 19 and 20. The conference will be held at National Institute of Technical Teacher’s Training and Research, Sector 26, Chandigarh.

According to Mr Dharam Vir, a senior Haryana cadre IAS officer who is also the president of the IYF, the aim of the conference is to enligthen the general masses about the benefits of yoga and naturopathy.

He said the deliberations on both the days will be divided into three parts — Yoga and Health, Yoga in Education and Sports and Indian System of Medicine.

Prominent yoga exponents Dr S.C. Manchanda, ex-professor cardiology, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr Anand Bal Yogi, Director ICYE&A, Pondicherry, among others, will present their papers.

Mr Dharamvir said in the current scenario, yoga, although, very popular has not got the requisite recognition.

Sports day celebrated

The junior sports day “Rhythm and Race 2005” of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 41, was held here today.

Nearly 250 students along with their parents took part in various fun races.

Dr Veena Parmar, Head of Paediatrics Department, GMCH, Sector 32, was the chief guest and Dronacharya Awardee Mr D.P. Azad was the guest of honour.

CITCO suspends GM (Tourism)

Chandigarh, March 13
The Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation(CITCO) has suspended Mr Arvind Malhotra, General Manager (Tourism). A departmental inquiry has been initiated against him and a report is expected to be tabled within two weeks.

The inquiry will be conducted by Ms Sarita Malik, Chief General Manager of the corporation. The office is not commenting on the matter saying “it wanted the inquiry to be conducted without any bias”.

It is, however, felt that the immediate reason for Mr Malhotra’s suspension was a goof-up in the invitation cards for inauguration of a green belt, recently.
