‘Guidelines needed for post-treatment trauma’
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 3
Timely treatment, after an accident leading to multiple fractures in the upper limbs of a patient in his mid-20s, can take care of his injuries. But the broken limbs, though now joined, can lead to stiff joints and cannot be treated.

After the treatment the movement of limbs get restricted. However, in the absence of any standard guidelines for coping with the post-treatment trauma or counselling, such patients devise their own mechanism like taking recourse in friends, guide-books and even faith healers.

The study conducted at the PGI has emphasised on the need to formulate general guidelines to cope successfully with problems that arise after the treatment. The study titled “Coping mechanism and its correlation with quality of life in upper limb post-traumatic joint stiffness,” which was recently awarded “S.N. Baksi Award- 2004” was conducted by Dr Aditya Aggarwal, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Dr Adarsh Kohli, Psychiatry Department, on 250 patients.

Dr Aggarwal says, “Recently there has been an increase in the number of road accidents.
