Conference on neuroanaesthesia from today

Chandigarh, February 24
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, PGI is organising the "6th Annual Conference of Neuroanaesthesiology and Critical Care’’, which begins here on Friday. As many as 500 delegates from India and abroad are expected to participating in the three-day conference.

Addressing mediapersons here today, Prof Jyotsna Wig, Chairperson of the Conference said that deliberations in the conference would include recent advances and update in Neuroanaesthesia, anaesthetic management during brain and spine surgery, a symposium on chronic backache and chronic pain syndromes conducted by neuroanaesthesiologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists and orthopedicians.

“Neuroanaesthesia is a highly specialised branch and the number of recent advances have been made in this field which has benefited the common persons a lot. The conference would highlight these aspects,’’ said Dr G.S.Kochar, Adviser of the Conference.

Role of anaesthesialogists in cardiovascular surgery, brain tumours, interventional neuroradiological procedures and epilepsy surgery will also be highlighted.

One session each will be dedicated to anaesthetic problems during neuroanaesthesia in children and anaesthetic and intensive care management of the patients with head injuries.

“Distinguished international faculty including Dr S.K. Pandit, Dr Keith Ruskin, Dr Christopher R. Turner and Dr Shailander Joshi from the USA, and other experts from the UK and Saudi Arabia will take part. Delegates from the leading institutes like AIIMS, New Delhi, NIZAM, Hyderabad and SGPGI, Lucknow are also taking part,’’ said Dr V.K. Grover, the Organising Secretary of the Conference.

PGI to celebrate Chhuttani’s birth anniversary

The Post Graduate Institute (PGI) here will celebrate the 90th birth anniversary of its former Director Late Prof Pran Nath Chhuttani here on Saturday. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister T.K.A. Nair will preside over the function and Vice-Chancellor of the JNU, New Delhi, Prof G.K. Chadha will be the guest speaker.

Prof Chhuttani joined the PGI as one of its founder faculty members and rose to be its Director from 1969 to 1978.

Patiala House continue to dominate YPS school games

Braving morning chilly winds, students of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali gave display of relay races in various age groups in both boys and girls section on the third consecutive day of the annual athletics meet of the school on the school campus grounds. Most of the races were won by Patiala House students. Patiala House also continued to lead on Thursday also.

Young cricketers have date with Dinesh Mongia

Chandigarh, February 24
Over 100 children had a date with test cricketer Dinesh Mongia at the Cricket Academy located on the grounds of Stepping Stones School, Sector 37, today. The academy, which is being run under the guidance of cricketer Narinder Kwatra, has more than 150 trainees.

School principal S. Kumar said apart from cricket, they had facilities for roller skating, badminton, table tennis and karate.

Dinesh Mongia, while interacting with the children, asked them to work hard and practice regularly. Youngsters were delighted to interact with the guest. Coach N. Kwatra said the academy was currently playing under the banner of Himachal Cricket Club.

Golf meet deferred

The Inter-Corporate Golf Tournament, which was scheduled to begin on February 27 at the Chandigarh Golf Club, Sector 6, has been postponed. According to a press note of the Chandigarh Golf Association, the next date will be announced shortly.

Electricity board meet

The team of Punjab State Electricity Board, Patiala, bagged basketball and wrestling titles in the 31st All-India Inter-Electricity Board Sports Tournament, which concluded last evening at Khalsa College, Patiala. In this meet, 10 teams from all over India took part. Mr Y.S. Ratra, Chairman, PSEB, gave away the prizes.

Cricket match

The UT Sports Department XI defeated Estate Office Employees XI by five wickets in a friendly match held at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium today. Batting first, Estate Office XI scored 170 runs all out with Rajneesh scoring 28 and Suresh making 37 runs. In reply, UT Sports Department XI achieved the target with five wickets in hand. Jasbir made 52, Naib Singh 23, while Shashi remained unbeaten at 48.

Table soccer tourney

The North Zone Invitational Table Soccer Championship will be held on April 9 and 10 at Doon Public School, Sector 21, Panchkula. This was stated by Mr Sanjay Anand, principal of the school. He said more than 200 players from various parts of North India will taken part in the two-day meet.

Earlier, Mr Balwinder Singh Johal, president of the Table Soccer Federation of India, formally inaugurated the sport in the school.

Annual kabaddi tourney begins

Bhago Majra (Kharar), February 24
It is a rural mela with Olympic touch. More than 50 teams are participating in the 21st annual kabaddi tournament, which started here today, to take away Rs 1.5 lakh as prize money.

The village is located on the Landran-Banur road, around 20 km from Chandigarh. The place was abuzz with villagers today who arrived in their thousands to cheer on the players.

Local MLA Bir Davinder Singh opened the tournament, which is being organised by Dashmesh Sports Club.

With kabaddi being the main event, the tournament will also see races for girls, bullock race, dog race and tug-of-war. The event is open for all.

Kabaddi has been a big draw and each year more than 50 teams of different clubs and villages participate, said Mr Jasbir Singh, president of the club.

Over Rs 2 lakh will be spent on the event and Rs 1.50 lakh will be given away as cash prize and trophies to winners on February 26, the final day. Highest cash prize of Rs 25,000 will be given in the open club category of kabaddi.

Finance is not a problem for the organisers, as Amrik Singh, an NRI, has chipped in with Rs 1 lakh and Baba Avtar Singh Dhoorkotwala, Tajinder Singh Punia and Sarabjit Singh Rs 21,000, Rs 11000 and Rs 5,100, respectively. For them the tournament is like “village Olympics”.

Kabaddi has been divided into six categories: 40 kg, 47 kg, 52 kg, 57 kg, 65 kg and open club.

In today’s 40 kg kabaddi category matches, six teams took part and Gopalpura won, while Bhago Majra came second.

Thirty five teams participated in the 1 km bullock race. Ranjit Singh Kainaur took away the title while Jeeva Singh of Bhago Majra and Charanjit Singh Kainaur finished second and third, respectively.

Mr Bir Davinder Singh gave a sum of Rs 2.5 lakh for upgrade of a village school and streets and Rs 25,000 for the club. He promised full government support to endorse such games.

Competitions in girls’ race, tug-of-war, kabaddi and dogs’ race would be held tomorrow.

PCA appeal to residents

To accommodate about 7500 visitors expected to visit the City Beautiful to enjoy the Test series scheduled to start from March 8 at PCA Cricket Stadium, Mohali the Punjab Cricket Association has appealed to the residents of Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula to offer accommodation to the cricket enthusiasts coming from Pakistan.

This gesture would help in developing the human relations between India and Pakistan in general and Punjab (India) and Punjab (Pakistan) in particular.

The interested persons who are interested to offer such accommodation can give details of accommodation and the persons to be accommodated in writing to the In charge, Boarding and Lodging, PCA Cricket Stadium, Phase IX, Mohali.

AG Punjab reach final

Chandigarh, February 24
The hosts and last year’s runners-up AG Punjab will clash with Delhi Audit in the final of the North Zone Indian Audit and Accounts Department Hockey Tournament underway at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42.

In the first semifinal of the day AG Punjab registered a thumping victory over AG HP by 9-1.

Tabish Hayat and Ravinder Singh scored three goals each, while Vikram contributed with two goals for the winners.

In the second semifinals, Delhi Audit edged past AG UP with a solitary goal scored by Amit Bakshi.

The finals will be played tomorrow at 2.30 pm. TNS
