Football Academy finish third

Chandigarh, February 15
The boys of St Stephen’s Football Academy finished third in the All-India Football Federation Under-13 football festival organised in Kolkata from February 2 to 8. The team returned to the city, today.

The Principal, Mr Harold Carver, termed their performance as “commendable” since they were pitted against 21 other teams. Before participating in this tournament, the team also won the u-13 state championship which was conducted by the Chandigarh Football Association. Being state champions, they got a chance to represent the city in the u-13 football festival.

They won the first match and the rematch against Tamil Nadu, then they won the quarterfinal against Goa and lost to West Bengal in the semifinals.

In the individual competition, goal-keeper Shubham Sahai Gupta secured third position in goal-saving while Simranjit Singh secured first position in the “dribble and shoot” contest. Arashpreet Singh also secured second position in the “1 v/s 1” contest.

Tiny tots take part in sports day

Students of pre-primary, first and second classes of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, took part in sports day, organised by the Nursery Teachers Training Institute of DAV Model School 15, here today.

Students of the GMSSS performed aerobics on foot-tapping music. A fancy dress show and a variety of races were also organised.

Bhangra was the main attraction of the show with Harinder Singh being given a special prize.

The chief guest, Ms Khushinder Sharma, Principal of the college, distributed prizes among the winners.

The results: Class 1-A: frog race — Sanchita 1, Arzoo 2, Karti 3; banana race — Vinayak 1, Himanshu 2, Nitesh 3.

Class 1-B: relay race — Sanjana 1, Manshika 2, Vani and Navkiran 3; lemon race — Harjap 1, Harjinder 2.

Class II-A: sack race — Sagar 1, Aman 2, Armaan 3; thread-the-needle race — (A) Saloni 1, Kritika 2, Karandeep 3; (B) Shefali 1, Sampan 2, Harneet 3.

Class II-B: hurdle race — Deepak 1, Vinod 2, Niraj 3; three-legged race — Sonal and Deeksha 1, Samta and Bhavya 2, Mandir and Suhine 3.

Nursery: butterfly race — Jasleen 1, Maninder 2, Sandeep 3.

Rowing championship on Feb 19

Chandigarh, February 15
The first Punjab Open Rowing Championship would be held at Sukhna Lake, here, on February 19. The General Secretary, Punjab Amateur Rowing Association, Mr Prabjeev Singh, said there would be competitions in single sculls, double sculls, coxless pairs and coxless four.

Raja K.S. Sidhu, Secretary-General, Punjab Olympic Association and Joint Secretary, Indian Olympic Association, will inaugurate the meet.

The association has decided to honour three players, among other international players of Punjab, who had won medals at the recently conducted senior nationals at Pune.

Minerva Academy Cricket Club win

Chandigarh, February 15
A sparkling century by Harish Garg (106 off 41 balls) helped the Minerva Academy Cricket Club beat JJ Sports in the 6th Mani Memorial Cricket Tournament held at REC grounds at Kurali today.

JJ Sports made 186 runs in 22 overs. Minerva Academy achieved the target with an over to spare. Harish Garg was adjudged ‘man of the match’ . Minerva Academy would meet the winner of the match between Ropar District XI and Mani Memorial Cricket Club in the final.

Brief score: JJ Sports 186 for 6, Umesh Kashyap 53, Manpreet Singh 37 not out, Karan Kherwal 3 for 19. MAC Club 190 for 4, Harish Garg 106, Varun Rajput 37, Sunny Sohal 2 for 20.

Due to inclement weather, the University Campus Annual Athletics Meet scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed. In view of this change, teaching will be resumed, according to a press note of Panjab University.
