BJP to protest if India accepts Pak proposal
Jammu, February 14 The President of the state unit of the BJP, Dr Nirmal Singh, told The Tribune here today that by agreeing not to issue travel documents on the basis of passport and visa mandatory the UPA government was “not only selling the interests of the country but also its security to Pakistan.” Describing the proposed plan of allowing people to cross the LoC from Uri on the basis of documents issued by the local authorities in Srinagar and Muzaffarabad as anti-national the BJP President said “it could open floodgates for militants.” He said for the past 15 years a large number of militants had managed to enter into Jammu and Kashmir with direct and indirect support of the Pakistan Army besides government agencies in Pakistan and the Occupied Kashmir. “Who will guarantee that the local authorities in Muzaffarabad won’t issue travel documents to militants,” the BJP President asked? He said he was not against building bridges of peace with Pakistan but each step in the confidence building measure should be weighed in terms of India's security and sovereignty. He said such a move would amount to support the demand for “azadi.” He added that it was mandatory for all Indians to travel to any foreign country on the basis of passport and visa and if this system was not applied to those travelling to Occupied Kashmir or from the other side of the LoC it would mean “India surrendering its control over this state.” The BJP President said he and his colleagues would appraise the party high command of the dangerous consequences of the move so that the nationwide agitation could be launched. However, Sheik Qayoom, political analyst, said if India agreed to allow people on either side of the LoC to travel via road on the basis of documents issued by the local authorities it would remain limited to people in Occupied Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir only. He said the local authorities issued a travel document only after proper scrutiny and verification by the passport office before issuing the same. He said the local intelligence agencies and the police assist the passport office in clearing the names of the applicants. There was no harm if the same process was adopted by the authorities before issuing travel documents to visitors on the either side of the LOC. |
1,300 migrant families want to return to valley
Jammu, February 14 This was stated here today by Revenue Minister Hakeem Yaseen while presiding over a meeting of the apex committee for redress of grievances of the migrants. He said that conditions were becoming more conducive for the safe return of the migrants. He urged the Kashmiri Pandit organisations to motivate them to return to the valley where incentives would be provided to them. The minister sought a consensus for the dignified and safe return of the Kashmiri Pandit migrants and said it was the resolve of the government to do so. Mr Yaseen said that the amnesty announced by the state government for surrendering fake ration cards and registration certificates by the migrants had helped in saving crores of rupees that were being used for improvement of the migrant camps. Those who participated in the meeting were unanimous that cluster colonies should be constructed in the areas previously dominated by Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. It was decided to update the revenue record and
preparation of inventories of immovable property of the dislocated Kashmiri Pandits and making it available on the website and also check fake sale of their properties in their absence. |
J&K commission flouts HC orders on married women
Jammu, February 14 Although the High Court had some time ago scrapped the practice of the government debarring the women marrying outsiders from getting recruited in the state services, but the public service commission has ignored these orders recently while issuing an advance notification for the combined competitive services examination. This is being described as a deliberate attempt of the commission to defy the orders of the court just to please the political bosses. In the advertisement pertaining to 131 vacant posts for which preliminary examinations are proposed to be held, the commission has clearly indicated that the female candidates will have to submit the “unmarried” certificate and those married will have to submit the “permanent resident after marriage” certificate. While disposing a public interest litigation against the women losing their state subject rights after marrying an outsider, the High Court had not only scrapped it but had also described it as unconstitutional. However, a controversy was raked up when a Bill was moved in the upper House seeking to stick to the earlier practice. However, the Bill was not put to vote and the chairman suddenly adjourned the House. The advertisement of the commission has once again started the controversy. The Congress, which is the largest partner in the coalition government in the state, has become a target of the BJP and other Jammu-based parties for having failed to get the verdict of the court on the sensitive issue honoured. A contempt petition was filed in the court a few months ago by the vice-president of the BJP, Prof Hari Om, but the commission has yet again chosen to flout the orders of the High Court. The court had ordered that no discrimination could be made between the males and females. Prof Hari Om has demanded immediate withdrawal of the “anti-women, retrograde and primitive notification”. He alleged that the ruling coalition has no respect for the judiciary and the rule of law and was determined to reduce women to being third grade citizens. |
Kar to have smooth sailing as NC withdraws candidate
Jammu, February 14 The decision of the NC came soon after its nominee Mr Mohammad Shafi Shah, filed his papers for the seat today. Mr Shah is likely to withdraw his papers in the wake of the NC decision. The seat had fallen vacant recently due to the death of Abdul Qayum, leader of Opposition in the House. Ms Sonia Gandhi, Congress President, has cleared Mr Kar’s candidature for the seat. The election for this seat and the other one vacated by Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed following his election as a MLA would be held on February 24. However, there were indications that Mr Kar might get elected as unopposed in case everything went on smoothly. Mr Kar had recently lost the election for Lok Sabha from the Baramula constituency in valley and party high command was looking for an opportunity to “rehabilitate” him. The PDP has cleared the name of Mr Bilal Lodhi for the seat that has been vacated by Mufti Sayeed. The decision of the NC not to field a candidate against Mr Kar is being seen as a politically significant move that has come following a series of meetings of Dr Farooq Abdullah with certain top leaders of the Congress. There were reports that the two parties were trying to mend fences before the term of the PDP in the office of Chief Minister expired in November next. |
