Heavy schoolbags! Forget it
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, February 9
The fact that students have to carry heavy schoolbags has been derided by one and all. The question of heavy schoolbags has been raised in Parliament too. A small clip is also being telecast on TV channels wherein the students are pleading with their parents and teachers to lighten their bags as they want to enjoy childhood.

Ludhiana Tribune tried to investigate whether the city schools are making efforts in this regard and the information collected was encouraging. Some schools were taking steps to reduce the burden of schoolbags. Mr R.S.Patial, Principal of DAV Public School, said,“We have told the students not to bring mathematics books daily. We give them photocopies of assignments to be done in the class. They have to bring mathematics books only on a certain day. They do not bring extra copies. Similarly, we have asked the parents also to oversee that the students do not bring all books.”

He further said from this academic session they would provide smaller schoolbags. “We have to teach them writing and reading skills primarily. So we concentrate on teaching these in school. Time-table is also planned in such a way that the students do not have to carry heavy textbooks on the same day.”

Similar efforts are being made by other school principals. Mr R.S. Gill, Principal of Guru Nanak Public School, said,“ Till class II we have done away with books. The children have only to bring the bags for tiffins only. Gradually we are going to reduce the burden of senior classes also.”

Ms Jaishree, Principal of Ryan International School, said, “We tell the parents to directly deposit the drawing books, stationery, work books, general knowledge books with the class teachers. We keep their scrapbooks and barring their diaries, rhyme books and tiffins the students have nothing extra to carry.”

“Finally some positive measures are being taken and at least a beginning has been made in this regard,” was what Ms Pragati, a parent, said.
