Cultural bonanza for DMCH students

Ludhiana, February 1
It is festival time at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here as its medical students are all set to celebrate a three-day cultural bonanza — “ECTOPIA 05” — at Dumra Auditorium from February 2 to 4.

During the festival, various talent hunt competitions will be organised between 11 am and 2 pm and again between 7 pm and 9 pm each day.

On the first day, Ad Fads, quiz, debate, jugalbandi of instrumental music and solo dance would be the main attractions, while on the second day students would take part in “just a minute”, debate, running commentary, painting, duet song, mono-acting and choreography.

The last day would be devoted to solo songs, twisted tunes, rangoli, skit, group dance and theme show.

The event would conclude with a prize distribution function, said Dr Sandeep Puri, chairman, cultural committee and Medical Superintendent of the DMCH.

According to Dr Navjot Bajwa, convener, and Dr Sunil Juneja, secretary, cultural committee, the aim of the event was to bring out the inherent talent of students and encourage them to participate in cultural activities for their overall personality development.

An undergraduate student, Kiran Kaul, quipped: “The festival will be a nice break from our hectic study routine and medical students are eagerly looking forward to the cultural festival. Despite our busy schedule, we are sparing time to rehearse in the evenings for the programme.”

IGNOU convocation put off to Mar 5

Ludhiana, February 1
The 16 convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) which was scheduled to be held on February 12 has been postponed. It will now be held on March 5.

Dr Umesh Chandra Pandey, Regional Director of IGNOU for Punjab and Chandigarh, said that information about the postponement of convocation is being sent to all students by post. Main function will be organised at the varsity HQ, it can be viewed through teleconferencing at various regional centers of IGNOU.

He said functions at 22 different regional centers all over India are linked to main venue at the varsity HQs through the teleconferencing network of IGNOU.

The convocation function for the students of Punjab and Chandigarh will be arranged at IGNOU Regional Centre, ITI Building, Bulepur, Khanna, he disclosed. — TNS

2 classrooms inaugurated

Samrala, February 1
Two rooms were inaugurated in Government Girls Senior Secondary School by Baba Sarbjit Singh Bhalla of Faraur Wale here today. These rooms were constructed by the Parbandhak Committee, Gurdwara Sri Vishavkarma Bhavan, Samrala, and Jathedar Gurdev Singh Mushkabad.

Position holders of the board exams were honoured on this occasion. Two girls, Atinder Pal Kaur and Harmanjot who won medals in boxing at the state level, were given bicycles by Baba Sarbjit Singh.

Mr Hazura Singh, finance secretary, donated Rs 5,000 school girls presented cultural programmes Mr Sanjiv Saddi and Mrs Ravinder Ravi conducted the stage.

Principal Bachittar Singh Barn, read the annual report of the school and thanked the guests for their contributions towards the school developments.

Docs strike work amid allegations

Khanna, January 31
Doctors of the Civil Hospital, Khanna, went on strike for more than four hours today when attendants of a patient started raising slogans against doctors of the hospital. The hospital authorities called the police to control the situation. Later, SDM Jaspal Mittal reached the hospital and the matter was sorted out after compromise.

Parveen Kumar, a resident of Lalheri Road, Khanna, alleged that he came to the Civil Hospital, Khanna, to get his child examined on Saturday night. Mr Parveen said here today that the doctor on duty misbehaved with him and locked him up in a room. He also alleged that the doctor caught hold him by his neck. After that he called his relative Rakesh Shahi, who sorted out the matter. But a police party came to his house yesterday following a complaint filed by the doctor.

Mr Parveen said he came to the Civil Hospital today to talk with the SMO about the matter. The SMO asked them to sit and called the doctor, he said. When the SMO was trying to solve the matter the doctors left the room and later went on strike. This led to resentment among patients who started raising slogans, he said.

A police party led by SI Parveen Kumar reached the hospital and dispresed the mob.

Dr N.K. Singla against whom the charges were levelled by the patient’s attendant said the attendant was drunk when he reached in the hospital. Denying the charges he alleged that the attendant had misbehaved with him, manhandled and intimidated him. Dr Singla said he had filed a complaint against the attendant at the city police station.

The SMO stated that the attendant and his supporters had come to him. When he asked them to tell their grievances and called the doctors concerned. The SMO alleged that the attendant and his companion used provoked language which irritated the doctor and led to the strike. The SMO further said the attendant and his companions even threatened the doctors. He added that the attendant did not lodge any complaint.

222 students examined at camp

Doraha, February 1
A total of 222 children were examined at an assessment camp organised at Government Senior Secondary School, Payal, today for the identification of disabled among children between 3-14 years.

The camp was organised by the Education Department in collaboration with Alimco A-team of doctors, including ENT specialists, eyes specialist, orthopaedic surgeons, and experts in the field of ophthalmology and psychology, who examined the students.

Mr Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal, SDM, Payal, said the patients would be provided devices and learning aids and appliances, including calipers, hearing aids spectacles, wheel-chairs tricycles, etc during the distribution camp to be organised in the next 4-5 weeks.

Mr Pardeep Kapoor, coordinator of this project, said Ekparayas and Ashirwad too were supporting the cause. Mrs Harvinder Kaur, DO Elementary, was the in charge of the camp. A camp will be held at Raikot on February 2 and Samrala on February 3, Kapoor added.

Dental check-up camp at jail

Ludhiana, February 1
The Aagaz Charitable Foundation, an NGO working for the cause of downtrodden today organised a free dental treatment camp in the Central Jail for women on the Tajpur Road here. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Malkiat Singh Birmi, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Jails, Punjab.

This is for the first time that such a camp had been organised in the jail. About 300 women inmates were treated while medicines were distributed by the Department of Jails, Punjab, free of cost.

Mr Birmi appreciated the effort made by the NGO for the welfare of women inmates and said more such camps should be organised on regular basis to spread education on dental care among jail inmates.

“We are grateful to the Aagaz for organising the camp,” said Harpreet, a jail inmate.

Doctors and other supporting staff from the local Christian Dental College conducted the dental examination and provided various kinds of treatments like scaling, abstraction and filling. An awareness lecture was also delivered on dental hygiene.

Run for peace and health held at DMCH

On the concluding day of annual athletics meet of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, the faculty and medical students took part in the Run for Peace and Health from old DMC campus to New DMC Hospital.

The run was flagged off by Mr R K Jaiswal, SP (City), Ludhiana. The run was led by Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH. Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Medical Superintendent (P) and Chairman, DMCH Sports Council, Dr G S Bajwa, Convener, Sports Council and Dr P S Nain, Secretary, Sports Council also participated in the event.

Mr Prem Gupta, acting secretary, managing society, DMCH addressing the participants said that the doctors could play an important role in motivating the society to promote peace and health as war bring end to human lives and creates health hazards.

He said that to inculcate this spirit in the new generation of medical students, the event has been organised and we are glad to see the enthusiastic response of faculty and students of DMCH for this noble cause. An exhibition cricket match was also organised between the teams of faculty and that of the Surgical and Medical specialties in which Surgery Department XI won by seven wickets.

The event was concluded with a prize distribution function in the Dumra Auditorium. Mr R K Jaiswal was the chief guest and gave away prizes to the winners of the athletic competitions organised yesterday at PAU ground.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jaiswal appreciated the efforts of students and said that such events could play a significant role in personality development. The prize for the best athlete in the female category was given to Gurmeen, undergraduate student of batch 2000 and in the male category, it was bagged by Arihant, an undergraduate student of batch 2000.

Kirti Gandhi and Nitin Sharma were adjudged best athletes among girls and boys (middle section), respectively, on the second day of the four-day annual athletics meet of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, here today.

The second day’s proceedings witnessed a keen contest among the participants drawn from Tagore House, Nehru House and Gandhi House, in which Gandhi House was named best house. Tiny tots dressed in colourful outfits as well as the students from Classes I and II took part in funs games like frog race, track race and tricycle race.

Jarkhar sports fest from Feb 5

All arrangements for the 9th annual sports festival of Jarkhar to be organised from February 5 to 7 have been completed. This was stated by Mr Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu and Mr Balbir Singh, chairman and president of the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club, after a meeting organising committee which was held here last evening to review the preparations.

This year’s festival is being dedicated to the memory of sports promoters Gubhej Singh and Bhupinder Singh. The main attraction of the opening day of the festival will be a wrestling bout for the title of Punjab Kesari. Rustam-e-Hind, Harminder Alamgir and Sher-e-Hind Sarvar Mohali will clash for this title, they said.

Others who attended the meeting included kabaddi promoter, Channa Alamgir, Mr Inderjit Phullawal, Mr Kulwant Singh Grewal from Norway, Mr Harpal Singh Lehal, Mr Tejwant Singh Sidhu, Mr Deepinder Singh, Mr Hardev Singh Grewal from Italy, Mr Harminder Singh from Canada.
