Doctor favours separate hospitals for children
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, January 28
A Scotland-based Indian doctor and a senior consultant in paediatrics at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill in Glasgow, Dr K.M. Goel, has advocated the concept of having separate hospitals for the children where paediatricians with specialisation in different fields could provide treatment to the sick children.

Dr Goel, a postgraduate in paediatrics from Lucknow University and settled in Scotland, is on a two-weeks visit to the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here to explore the possibilities of some kind of joint efforts towards treatment of rickets and rheumatoid arthritis among the children.

During his stay in the city and visit to surrounding areas in Punjab, Dr Goel would also collect material to compile a book, “The Tale of Two Cities”, in which he proposed to compare the children of more than 15,000 Punjabis settled in Glasgow and those residing in their native state, with a focus on their common ailments.

Mr Goel, who was offered a post in the Department of Medicine in the CMCH in 1965 but chose to immigrate to the UK instead, said a little had been done to strengthen the infrastructure for treatment of sick children in India in the past over 40 years. In view of the fact that more than 40 per cent of the population of the country came under paediatrics (up to the age of 18 years), it was a pity that even the hospitals exclusively for children in India could be counted in fingers.

“The children are not mini-adults or pygmies. They have their own typical diseases, needing specialised medical and nursing care, which unfortunately, lacks in India. More than the absence of necessary infrastructure, the absence of the concept of exclusive hospitals for children is disturbing and needs to be given due attention.” Dr Goel observed that only when there were hospitals, tending solely to sick children, the trained medical, nursing and para-medical professional in paediatrics would be available. He was also of the opinion that provision of just one per cent of the total outlay for healthcare in India was low, particularly so in a country where vast majority of the population was poor.

Dr Goel had delivered lectures on rickets, arthritis and rheumatism in several countries, including the USA besides writing and contributing to several medical text books,a large number of publications and articles in international journals. He was instrumental in making an animated film, “In place of the Sun,” based on a study on rickets among the Asian children in Britain.

Meanwhile, the CMCH authorities said Dr Goel would deliver a lecture on February 6 during a day-long CME to be conducted by the paediatrics department of the hospital.
