150 units of blood donated

Chandigarh, January 27
The Canara bank Officers’ Association, Chandigarh region, organised of the seventh blood donation camp on the bank’s premises in Sector 34-A here on the occasion of Republic Day in association with the PGI, Chandigarh.

Mr Y.L. Madan, General Manager of the Bank, inaugurated the camp. As many as 150 units of blood were donated by members of the association and their families from Ludhiana, Patiala, Panchkula, Mohali and Ambala.

Mr P.G. Chawla, Deputy General Manager, Canara Bank, Chandigarh circle, presented mementoes to donors.

UIET students donate blood

Chandigarh, January 27
More than 150 students donated blood at a camp organised by the Public Relations Committee of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the PGI, Chandigarh here today.

Prof B.S. Sohi, Director, UIET, said the students had organised the camp. He promised all help for more such endeavours.

Prof J.K. Gupta, Dean, University Instruction, inaugurated the camp.

Table soccer introduced at DPS, Pinjore

Chandigarh, January 27
Table soccer was launched on the occasion of the 56th Republic Day at Delhi Public School, Pinjore, by the Principal of the school, Mr Samson Masih, last evening. The school also organised various track and field events, incuding races, high jump, shot put, discus throw and inter-house relay events, as part of the Republic Day celebrations. The sport was, however, introduced in this region by the Table Soccer Federation of India. Later Mr Masih said they had also decided to bid for the Second National Table Soccer Meet on their school campus. He said besides table soccer, the school was equipped with facilities for many sports like cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, badminton, lawn tennis, five-hole mini golf course, carrom, chess, yoga and karate.

Mr Masih said the school was built on a 12-acre complex and soon they woudl have a multipurpose gymnasium hall and swimmingpool on the campus.

Selection trials

The Chandigarh Volleyball Association will hold selection trials on January 29 at Sports Complex, Sector 7, to select probables in boys and girls sections for extensive training at a coaching camp to be held at Sports Complex, Sector 7. Players born on or after January 1,1987, in both boys and girls sections will be eligible to take part in the trials. The final selection of the players will be made on February 9 for the 31st Junior National Volleyball Championship to be held at Andhra Pradesh from February 8 to 14.

Veena, Sahil adjudged best athletes

Chandigarh, January 27
Two athletes of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, Veena and Sahil Khurana brought laurels to their school by winning best athletic titles in girls and boys section respectively in the UT Inter School Athletic meet, which concluded on Tuesday at Sports Complex, Sector 7.

Both win in below 19 years section and also helped the school being adjudged overall runners-up. Ms Indira Dhingra, Principal of the school appreciated the achievements of the athletes. She said they had provided complete athletic track for students. She said in handball, judo also, school players had excelled in the past.

Satluj beat Minerva by 12 runs

Chandigarh, January 27
The Satluj Coaching Centre, scored their first win by defeating Minerva Academy by 12 runs and kept their hopes alive to make it in the last four of the first Amartex Cup Cricket-2005, organised by Panchkula District Cricket Association here last evening at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala.

Earlier, the match could not begin in time due to poor visibility and the umpires curtailed it to 25 overs a side.

The skipper of the Satluj Cricket Club, Nagesh Gupta, opted to bat after winning the toss. They scored 119 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Ranji player Amit Uniyal scored 36 runs. In reply, Minerva Academy were bundled out for 107 runs.

Brief scores: Satluj CC:119 runs for seven in 25 overs (Amit Uniyal 36, Deepak Saini 27, Karanveer Singh 13, Sudhir Kashyap 4 for 16). Minerva Academy: 107 runs all out in 23.4 overs (Anil Sharma 26, Mandeep Virk 20, Harish Garg 10, Vipul Sharma 3 for 12, Sanjay Dhull 2 for 30).
