Sania’s performance makes fellow players happy
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, January 19
Two national women tennis players of the country, who have played with and are friends of tennis sensation Sania Mirza, are jubilant on her making history by reaching the third round of the Australian Open Tennis meet, in progress at Melbourne. This 18-year-old Hyderabad girl on Wednesday surprised Petra Mandula of Hungary, the 84th seed, and earlier on Monday Cindy Watson of Australia to finally have a dream clash with seventh seed Serena Williams on Thursday morning.

Isha Lakhani of Mumbai and Shruti Dhawan of Chandigarh, both international tennis players, expressed their happiness over the superb confidence shown by their fellow Sania Mirza in the Grand Slam.

Isha, who is nowadays practising in preparation for the WTA tennis meet to be held in Hyderabad from February 5, said playing in a Grand Slam tournament of this level gives a lot of boost to a player, and Sania truly deserves to be complimented. Isha, who had beaten Sania in the 2003 ITF Futures Meet in Mumbai in the quarter-final, said Sania is a gutsy player and in the past few years with the backing of a regular sponsor and the help of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), she has played a lot of tournaments abroad.

Isha, now ranked 620, said even Sania was at one time ranked 400, but by playing more her ranking has improved to 60. She said Sania has enhanced India’s image in the tennis world, especially in women tennis.

Chandigarh-based Shruti Dhawan, another national tennis player who has been playing in England for the past one year, said during the past five years of Sania’s playing career, she was pitted against her only once. This was in 2003 in the ITF Futures Tennis meet held in Indonesia where she lost in three sets to Sania. Shruti said it was only another Indian Nirupama Vaidyanathan, who once won a round in the Australian Open.

On Sania’ current performance, Shruti, ranked 720, said it has opened the doors to other Indian women tennis players, as now they could also think of improving their rankings by taking part in different international tournaments.

No wonder, one day she might also get her entry in the main draw of any grand slam. Shruti was optimistic that Sania’s encounter with Serena would be exciting and here Sania might give tough resistance to Serena, the Women’s Singles title holder of 2003 Australian Open.

Encroachments removed
Our Correspondent

Dera Bassi, January 19
Following directions of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, the enforcement wing of the Dera Bassi Municipal Council today removed encroachments from the local market.

A team of the enforcement wing removed the establishments spread by shopkeepers in the streets of the market. The streets had been virtually taken over by the encroachers, leaving little space for the general public to move around.

The encroachments had been proving bottlenecks in the streets and to ride the two wheelers inside the market had become a tough task.

Mr Amrit Pal Singh, president of the Municipal Council, claimed that the encroachers had been ignoring the warnings issued to them. They even turned a deaf year towards repeated notices and muniadi, a public announcement in this regard, he added.
