Ludhiana, January 6 Dr A.S.Bansal, Director of the institute, has appreciated the performance of the students. He has said students of the institute have achieved remarkable results not only in academics but also in the fields of sports and cultural and literary activities. Salad-making competition: A salad-making competition was held at New SMD Senior Secondary School here on Thursday. More than 180 students from the Vth Standard onwards participated in it.In senior girls category Yashwinder Kaur stood first, Pallavi Agarwal second and Itika Singla and Jyoti Bala were adjudged third. In junior girls category Lakshmi Gupta won the first position, Ekta Dixit second while Toyama Verma and Anjali Bajaj won the third position. In the senior boys category Gurdip Singh and Ratul Soni stood first and second respectively while Abhineet Godayal and Pawan Kumar were adjudged third. In the junior boys category, Prabhjot Singh stood first, Ashish Kumari second while Chandrakant Chada and Sahil Jaidka were adjudged third. Primary teachers flay govt: The Government Primary Teachers Association, Punjab, has condemned the decision of the Punjab Government to recover the higher grades awarded to higher qualification teachers from January 1986. It has decided to start their ‘struggle’ against the “black law” and to file a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.A meeting of the association will be held on January 8 at Atam Park to chalk out the struggle plan. Mr Piara Singh Dhillon, state President of the association, said the recovery would be in lakhs and a large number of teachers had retired from the service. |
Octogenarian enjoys making leaf paintings
Ludhiana, January 6 Talking about his work, Mr Inderjeet Singh Raja said though his children wanted him to enjoy retired life, doing nothing, but this work of art gave him both enjoyment and satisfaction. He has made some beautiful paintings of Sikh Gurus on different leaves. “I am a religious minded person and religion-remains to be in focus in all my work. Not only on Sikhism but I have made paintings using water colours and poster colours on Christianity, Hinduism and Islam which have been appreciated by all. With the encouragement of my wife, I am enjoying my work and my life”, said Mr Raja. Mr Raja has already held many exhibitions at different colleges in the city. An art exhibition of his leaf paintings was inaugurated at Government College for Women here today by Ms N.K. Sekhon, Vice-Principal GCW. Mr N.S. Nanda, President Punjab Hotels Association was the chief guest and Ms Manjit Kaur Sodhia, former Principal GCG was the guest of honour. A number of faculty members and students of the department of fine arts and many visitors view the exhibition.The exhibition was organised by Punjabi Sabhyachar Academy. Mr N.S. Nanda said that Mr Raja was a senior citizen and had made more than 1000
paintings. He admired the work of Mr Raja and described him as a perfect artist in this field. Prof Gurcharan Singh, Head Department of Fine Arts also appreciated the work of Mr Raja. Earlier Dr S.N. Sewak, President of the Academy pointed out that Mr Raja had enriched the cultural activity in Punjab with his paintings. Punjabi singers enthral
Ludhiana, January 6 Despite chilling cold hundreds of people converged on the open theatre to listen to their favourite singers. And they were deservingly treated to some great numbers like ‘Jogiya ve jogiya’, ‘Nehro par bangla’, ‘Dhruvtara’, ‘Teri meri Akh ladd gayi’ and a number of other songs. The programme continued till past midnight as the
fans refused to withdraw wanting more and more. The singers were felicitated by the directors
of Win Cable, Mr GS Arora and Mr A S Dhaba. The singers expressed their gratitude to the fans. Romy Gill said while the fans may have felt great over the night, their (the singers’) joy was much more as “it is a great honour to learn that you are admired”. He said, he was touched by the interest and the enthusiasm shown by the fans despite the temperature dipping to an all-time low during the night. |

DC inspects hospital store
Amloh, January
6 The Deputy Commissioner has
launched a campaign to inspect the medicine stores of all hospitals in
the district in view of an alleged medicine scam which was unearthed
recently at the Civil Hospital, Bassi Pathana. Later, talking to
mediapersons, Mr Ahluwalia said the stock register of the medicine store
of the local Civil Hospital had been properly maintained. He said the
stock register at the Civil Hospital, Bassi Pathana, had been found
incomplete and misappropriation of lakhs of rupees was
suspected. Meanwhile, a deputation of locals, including Mr Sucha Singh
of the SAD (Amritsar), Urban, Mr Rajpal Garg, vice-president of the
district unit of the BJP, Mr Naresh Jindel, social worker, Mr Mangat
Arora, Karyana Association chief, and Mr Vinod Mittal, secretary of the
Vyopar Mandal, urged the Deputy Commissioner to earmark funds for the
development of certain streets where rainy water often got accumulated.
The condition of the park meant for children also needed improvement,
