Lawyer hurt in robbery bid

Chandigarh, January 6

Two unidentified jeep-borne youths allegedly attempted to rob a lawyer, who is the son of a Deputy Secretary-level officer of the Central Government, of his car near the Fire Station in Sector 17 after attacking him last night.

The local police handed over the body of Daya Ram Yadav alias Dajo, a porter, who was found brutally murdered on a pathway behind the Sukhna Lake, to his family members after a post-mortem, today.

Le Corbusier’s plan of having an 11-storeyed commercial block in Sector 17 is all set to see the light of the day, with the Chandigarh Administration setting in motion the planning for the building by asking the architecture wing to lay out the blueprint for the same.

Class VIII exams from February 7
Chandigarh, January 6
The Class VIII board examination in the city government schools would begin from February 7 as per the schedule released by the UT Education Department here today. The examination would be held from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Around 12,000 students are appearing in the examinations.

Chandigarh Police acts as good Samaritan
Sets up a sports club at Bapu Dham Colony
Chandigarh, January 6

The Chandigarh Police today formed a sports club by selecting 60 persons from Bapu Dham Colony and provided them with a playing space at the police post at the locality. The club was inaugurated by the UT IGP, Mr Rajesh Kumar, at the Bapu Dham Police Post.

Faulty design ends her life

Mandeep Kaur, wife of Mr Navreet Singh Kang, a former UT Finance Secretary and a Punjab cadre IAS officer, died at the AIIMS, New Delhi, today. She was the daughter-in-law of Justice S.S. Kang, a former Governor of Kerala. The cremation will take place tomorrow at Chandigarh.

Former cricketer challaned
Panchkula, January 6
A Ceilo car was today challaned by the police after the car owner, a former cricketer, found using black film without permission. The car was parked outside the district courts complex. The owner, Avtar Singh, a former member of the Haryana Junior Cricket team, was also unable to provide any permission certificate for use of black films.

Fortified flour to hit market soon
Chandigarh, January 6
Wheat flour, milled in roller flour mills of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, will now come packed with a punch of iron and folic aid to address micronutrient deficiencies among the lower strata of society. The flour would be available for sale in the market in about two week’s time.

Plea to reduce sales tax on furniture

The Federation of Industrial Associations today urged the UT Administration to reduce sales tax on furniture items from 13.2 per cent to 8.8 per cent on the pattern of the Punjab Government.

The Students Organisation of Panjab University has given a call to students of the Department of Hindi to boycott classes tomorrow. The appeal comes in the wake of the “indifferent” attitude of the Panjab University authorities towards the students’ demand to hold exam again for candidates wanting to enrol themselves for a Ph. D degree in the department.

CBSE not to stop admit cards

The Central Board of Secondary Education has decided not to stop the admit cards of students on account of extension of affiliation of respective school. The decision would be applicable during the board examination beginning in March this year.

The UT Administrator, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), today constituted a 24-member Administrator’s Advisory Council. The council has a term of two years. The council has about five Congress men, one BJP member and Milkha Singh, among others.
