Maulvi Farooq under pressure to take part in poll
M.L. Kak

Jammu, January 3
The chairman of the APHC, Molvi Umar Farooq, is under pressure from his supporters to take part in the ensuing election to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

Sources said the Maulana’s supporters want the Kashmir Mirwaiz to allow the Awami Action Committee, which is headed by Molvi Umar Farooq, to contest the civic poll. Since Molvi’s main area of influence is limited to the interior of Srinagar city, his supporters want a say in the running and management of the civic affairs which was only possible if the action committee candidates contested.

According to the sources, National Conference leaders are keen on indirect support from Molvi for their candidates in case the action committee decided to boycott the poll.

So far Molvi has not decided whether to field candidates or lend support to the National Conference or boycott the poll.

The sources close to the Kashmir Mirwaiz said since Molvi headed the APHC, which had decided to boycott the election, it may not be easy for him to allow the Awami Action Committee, which is a constituent of the APHC, to even think of indirect participation in the poll.

According to a senior APHC leader, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, the reports that Molvi Umar Farooq was contemplating to participate in the civic elections are ‘baseless’.

He said: “Our conglomerate has been for total poll boycott as we believe that elections are not going to resolve the Kashmir issue as has been the case since 1951 when the first Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir.”

He said as head of the APHC Molvi Farooq “will not violate its constitution and the decision of its executive committee.”

He said Syed Ali Shah Geelani “fell out with us because he wanted action against the People’s Conference, a constituent of our conglomerate, on the charge of having participated indirectly in the 2002 Assembly poll.”

Reports said a number of people aspiring to be members of the municipal corporation were trying to seek Molvi Farooq’s help. At least in three Assembly constituencies, which are within the limits of the municipal corporation, his indirect support has the potential of shaping the destiny of several people.
