DIG out of danger; 2 militants arrested

Srinagar, January 2
The South Kashmir police chief Ravinder Kotwal, who was among 10 police personnel and eight civilians injured in a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) blast at Anantnag was reported to be out of danger, while the security forces arrested militants in the state during the past 24 hours.

A villager, Fareed Ahmad Khan, had a close shave with death last night when militants left him to die after hanging him from a tree at Chakipora Achabal in Anantnag district.

An official spokesman said the militants entered his house and dragged him out. They later hanged him from the tree and left the area. However, his family members and other villagers brought him down and saved his life.

He said militants triggered a powerful IED kept in a three-wheeler near a petrol station at Nai Basti in Anantnag when Mr Ravinder Kotwal was passing by in his vehicle.

He said besides Mr Kotwal, nine other police personnel, mostly guards of the DIG, and eight pedestrians were injured in the blast.

Two police vehicles and glasspanes of nearby houses were damaged in the blast. The injured have been admitted to different hospitals where the condition of one of the police constables, who is in coma, was stated to be critical.

The DIG was, however, out of danger, Khan said. The police arrested two militants from the Zero Bridge area of the city along with a grenade launcher and three grenades last night.

The security forces and the police also seized two pistols, five magazines, 2 kg of RDX, one UBGL launcher, 11 UBGL grenades, eight hand grenades, one wireless set, two remote control devices and 10 detonators in Doda district last night. However, no one was arrested. — UNI

BJP open to alliance with Shiv Sena, Akali Dal
Our Correspondent

Jammu, January 2
While the ruling alliance partners, the Congress and the PDP, have decided to contest the ensuing civic elections unitedly, the state unit of the BJP has announced that it is ready to have an electoral alliance with like-minded parties.

The BJP president, Dr Nirmal Singh, has had sessions with the Shiv Sena leaders here and is in the midst of forging an alliance with the Akali Dal.

He said here today that “we are ready to have an alliance with like-minded parties and modalities for contesting the election to the Jammu Municipal Corporation with the Shiv Sena and the Akali Dal are being finalised.”

Initially, the BJP had decided to field its candidates on all 71 seats in the corporation but when its leadership came to know that the Praja Parishad was also contesting the poll, it decided to enter into an electoral agreement with the Akali Dal and the Shiv Sena.

The elections to the corporation and the urban local bodies is going to be a crucial test for the BJP which was routed in the previous Assembly and the Lok Sabha polls. This time its candidates may not face an uphill task because the RSS-led state morcha has decided to keep off the poll process.

At the same time, the BJP will face a major challenge from the Congress in the Jammu region.

The leader of the third front, Mr Hakim Mohammad Yasin, revenue and Relief Minister, has criticised the government plan of contesting the civic elections on the party basis. He said the civic poll should have been allowed to remain a no-party matter so that suitable candidates could get elected to the corporations and the local bodies.

Mr Yasin has avoided confronting the government for the time being because his third front has yet to become a force.
