Shimla, December 23
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today said the one single factor which could place developing India in the category of the developed nations was the confidence amongst its rich resource of 540 million youth that they have the capability to make India a powerful nation.

The President, while interacting with the student community from schools, colleges and university here today, unfolded the ‘Kalam’ mantra for making India a leading nation. “No doubt we have rich culture and abundant natural resources but no other country can match us in having such a high strength of young and powerful minds,” he said.

President Kalam, interacted with the students at the lawns of the state guest house at Peterhoff, here today. “By the time you leave school and college you should be clear as to what is your goal in life and be prepared to sweat and overcome the difficulties,” he exhorted to the students. Instead of being a professional seeking job, your aim should be to provide jobs to others by being an entrepreneur, he added.

President Kalam , while stating that he was happy to know that the literacy rate in Himachal was very high, said women’s education must be given the highest priority. “The only way to control our population is to evolve small families through women’s education as strides made in different fields are negated by our ever increasing numbers,” he stressed.

He added that with the proposed 33 per cent reservation in Parliament, the women power would be all too visible as today they were excelling and competing with men in every field.

He said the focus should now be on taking urban facilities to the rural areas so that the maximum benefit could be derived from technological advancements like e-governance, telemedicine, satellite education and telecommunication.

“For a population of one billion people, networking of rivers is very essential to undertake transfer of water from surplus basin to deficit one, as it has manifold benefits like flood protection, irrigation facility and power generation,” he emphasised underlining its need.

“During my brief stay here I have seen that even an ordinary person in the remote village has a dream and vision for his country, which is most important,” he said. He said the five most important areas, which were essential for removing poverty, were enhancing agriculture production, education and health care, information and communication technology, infrastructure development and self-reliance.

The Education Minister, Ms Asha Kumari, outlined the achievements made by Himachal since it achieved statehood, especially in the field of education and had the second highest literacy rate in the country.

The President, did not forget to extend an invitation to the student community from Himachal to Retreat, the Rashtrapati Niwas here in Mashobra, during his next visit.

He promised that he would invite 500 college and university students and an equal number of school children to Retreat, before the start of their academic session. “I will try and spend more than 2 hours exclusively with you as I feel that the dream that you have in your eyes for your state and country is the single most important factor,” he remarked.

Even though he replied to more than a dozen questions put up by students, he assured the remaining that they could read his answers to their queries on his website.

In a memorandum submitted to Dr Kalam, who addressed the legislators today , said the state had a strong case for a special package as it was depriving itself of the forest revenue running into crore of rupees just to protect the environment for the benefit of the entire country. The centre should suitably compensate the state for it.

They pointed out that the hill state had made special contribution to the services and as many as 52 officers and jawans laid down their lives in the Kargil war. Not only that two out of the four Param Vir Chakras conferred on the brave soldiers of the state. It said that the matter was being brought to his notice as he was the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

They also demanded immediate implementation of the one-rank, one-pension rule for all categories of ex-servicemen.
