Scabies cases in winter go up
Chandigarh, December 18 “In winter, people do not take bath daily and many do without a bath for days together. Scabies, which accompanies itching, is highly infectious and if one family member gets infected, the entire family acquires the disease from him,” says skin specialist at the General Hospital, Sector 16, Dr Vanita Gupta. Cases of scabies are coming from the slums as doctors at GH-16 say that 50 persons are coming to the OPD clinics daily with the infection that is caused by a mite. Cases are also reported from the city’s polyclinics and dispensaries. “Cases of scabies keep coming in the clinics till March, as long as the residents use the quilt to keep the chill away,” adds the doctor. For treatment, clothes should be boiled and ironed before wearing to kill germs. If one member is showing the symptoms of the disease, the entire family is required to undergo the treatment. “In many families towels and clothes are shared. This should be stopped. Experts recommend nails should not be grown, says the doctor. |
