J&K Govt giving boost to sports

The state government is busy rebuilding infrastructure, restoring peace and ensuring development in the state. It is also concerned with giving a facelift to sports activities in the state and boosting the morale of young players.

Hurriyat leaders among protesters held

The police used force and held a number of protesters demonstrating against the alleged violation of human rights here today, while several separatist leaders were prevented from leading similar demonstrations at several other places.

A number of activists of the Jammu Kashmir Peoples Freedom League were held while holding demonstrations at the TRC here and attempting to take out a procession towards the office of the UNMOG this afternoon. The protesters alleged that security forces committed excesses against innocent masses and violated of human rights.

A spokesman for the separatist Hurriyat Conference (Mirwaiz) here claimed that a group of its leaders was held while proceeding to Mattan in Anantnag district today. The leaders were going to Mattan in connection with the recent incident of damage caused to Dar-ul-Uloom allegedly by security forces. The spokesman also referred to the recent incidents of alleged violation of human rights at the hands of security forces in Pattan and Sopore in Baramula district. These included the death of a civilian in an IED explosion near Pattan and the death of an employee of the Health Department, who was killed along with two suspected foreign militants attempting to force their entry into a security force picket.

Protest demonstrations have also been reported from Sopore town of Baramula district against the killing of an innocent civilian, who was reportedly killed along with two militants in a suicide attempt in the town recently.

The chief of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Forum, Mr Javed Ahmad Mir, was also held along with his supporters near Pattan, a spokesman for the organisation claimed. The spokesman said that the JKLF leaders were proceeding to Sopore and Pattan to express their sympathies with the kith and kin of those killed in the two alleged “fake incidents”. The JKLF also expressed concern over other incidents at Mattan in Anantnag district and Pulwama in south Kashmir.

J&K Govt giving boost to sports

The state government is busy rebuilding infrastructure, restoring peace and ensuring development in the state. It is also concerned with giving a facelift to sports activities in the state and boosting the morale of young players.

In the past year-and-a-half, 34 boys and girls from the state have represented India in various disciplines. During the same period, players in various disciplines have won 155 medals — 50 gold, 52 silver and 53 bronze. This includes the first-ever medal for Jammu and Kashmir in swimming. Five players from the state have been selected in the under-19 national cricket team for the Commonwealth tournament.

The Department of Youth Services and Sports and the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council have kept the playgrounds busy with activity. Competitions at various levels had a participation of 1,30,636 students in 2002-03. For the current year, the department expects a participation of about 1.35 lakh students in various competitions.

The department, in association with the Youth Hostels Association of India, sent 320 boys and 249 girls to Doabi, Himachal Pradesh, for trekking in 2003-04. About 450 students participated in this year’s programme at Pahalgam in May.

Rural sports meets — concept of involving non-students and the rural youth in sports activities, were held at various places in the state. More than 17,000 youth participated in these and enjoyed recreation facilities.

The spurt in sports activities in the state has resulted in a demand for more playgrounds. To meet this demand, 174 playgrounds are being developed in rural areas under district and state sectors. Cases of 67 playgrounds have been submitted to the Central Government under centrally sponsored schemes by the department. The indoor stadium at Jammu is nearing completion and a skating rink has been constructed at Srinagar.

Officers reshuffled in J&K

Mr Abdul Majid Mir, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar has been posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla in place of Mr Sharief-ud-Din.

Mr Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Malik, Settlement Officer, Jammu, has been posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner, Poonch. Mr Sharief-ud-Din, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, has been posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner in place of Mr Abdul Majid Mir.

Indu Bushan, Deputy Director Handloom, Jammu, has been posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner, Doda.

7 jawans injured in militant attack

Srinagar, December 17
Five police personnel and two CRPF men were injured when militants attacked a police station here last evening, while two others, including a militant, were killed and another injured in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since yesterday.

The police here said five police personnel and two jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured when militants hurled a grenade at Khanyar police station here last evening.

The police personnel fired in retaliation, however, without causing any damage. Those injured were shifted to hospital.

Unidentified militants shot at and injured an SPO, Gulzar Ahmad Malla, at Karan Nagar here yesterday.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces in the Surankote area of Poonch district in Jammu region today.

The police recovered the body of Bilal Ahmad Dar, a shopkeeper, from the Awantipora area of Pulwama district today.

He had been kidnapped by suspected militants and hanged to death, police here said.

Lt-Gen Balbir Singh assumes charge

Lt-Gen Balbir Singh has taken over as Chief of Staff Headquarter, Northern Command, Udhampur.

Lt-Gen Balbir Singh is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla and was commissioned from India Military Academy in June 1967 in the Bihar Regiment. The General Officer has a distinguished military career. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion in J&K, an Assam Rifles sector in Nagaland and Mountain Division in J&K. He has also held several prestigious staff and instructional appointments.

He has been the Brigade Major of an infantry brigade, Colonel General in Army headquarters, Chief of Staff of a corps in the Desert Sector and Additional Director General in Army Headquarters. He has been an instructor in Infantry School and Defence Service Staff College.

He has also been an instructor abroad in the Nigerian Defence Academy. The General Officer is also a Doctorate from Indore University.

Lt-Gen Balbir Singh has been awarded VSM and Bar to VSM for distinguished service in Nagaland and J&K. The General Officer is the Colonel of Bihar Regiment.
