Veeri surprised at lack of facilities for cops
Jammu, December 14 Mr Veeri is scheduled to hold a series of review meetings which will include his interaction with the Civil Secretariat security agencies. He is scheduled to hold review meetings in various police ranges and would visit different district headquarters. According to sources after Mr Veeri ended his discourse advising the police to “wear a human face” and tackle militancy related problems in sympathetic way, police functionaries informed him about the problems being faced by the men in khaki. Over the years the demand for security cover from political leaders and senior bureaucrats had increased and as a result groups of policemen, guarding the VIP enclosures had to suffer while staying in tattered tents which had no basic facilities like toilets. A police officer said those guarding residences of VIPs and other senior government functionaries had no permission to use bathrooms and toilets inside palatial houses of the VIPs. The officers demanded, during their interaction with Mr Veeri, that barracks should be set up at places where the security personnel set up camps while on security duty. Another demand was that facilities should be provided to the security personnel to give them relief from sizzling heat in the summer in Jammu region and from biting cold in the Kashmir valley in the winter months. Those who attended the review meeting in Jammu on Monday informed Mr Veeri that the level of militancy related violence had gone down during the past one year in the region and no cases of excesses by the security forces had been registered in the area. They wanted better amenities, including modern weapons and communication system for the security forces. Reports said after completing the interaction with the officers in police and other security agencies Mr Veeri will submit a detailed report to the Chief Minister on the need to improve facilities for the police personnel and if the state government accepts the report then the matter would be taken up with the Centre for financial support. |

Srinagar, December 14 He was replying to questions from mediapersons on the occasion of flagging off a group of schoolchildren on an educational tour. The tour was organised by the Army. The GOC, Lieut-Gen Nirbhay Sharma, said the decline was possible due to the modern gadgetry and anti-infiltration mechanism adopted by the Army. He added that the attempts of infiltration were being foiled with the presence of preventive measures at three levels. Referring to recent spurt in violence, General Sharma said this was because the militants wanted to scuttle the ongoing peace process. He said the militants, particularly foreigners, did not like the peace process to move forward. He added all efforts were being made to restore peace. He said the situation was gradually returning to normalcy. During their three-week-long tour, the students will meet the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Chief of the Army Staff and the Chief Minister of Delhi. They will also visit Agra and Jaipur. |
