Mumbai dancer held in sex racket catering to VIPs
Our Correspondent

Noida, December 4
Three girls, including a dancer from Mumbai, are in police custody in connection with a high profile call girl racket. Five persons have been arrested in this connection. The police have recovered two dairies and some other documents from the accused.

The racket was operating in a well-heeled circle and the call girls used to travel from Mumbai by air. They were operating in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi etc. The accused used to rent out farmhouses, posh guesthouses, flats etc in VIP areas to entertain their customers. A number of VIPs are in a state of panic following the arrests and fear that the police or the arrested persons may spill the beans.

According to well-placed sources, the police had been on the trail for sometime. They had information that a sex racket was active in the city involving models and dancers from Bollywood, who would fly to the city to entertain a select group of clientele. It is alleged that some high profile pimps are also involved in the racket.

According to the police, the pimps used to ostensibly book the girls in Mumbai for a “dance show”. Since VIPs generally stay in flats in posh colonies, the police had little access to their love nests. The racketeers would travel in expensive limousines, so that a huge fee could be extracted from the rich clients. Often, five-star hotels were the meeting points. According to the police, the racketeers had hired a bungalow (No.102) in Sector-39, Noida.

Interestingly, when the sleuth reached the bungalow, they found a padlock on the main gate. They were about to retreat when they heard come commotion inside. Later, the cops entered the house forcibly and nabbed the racketeers.

The arrested call girls were identified as Madhu, Kajal and Rachna. Two men were also arrested by the police. The police have found telephone dairies in which names of the call girls, the dates of the transactions and the payments have been recorded. Further investigation is on.

Faridabad, December 4
The misuse of land allotted for welfare purposes by the Union Government several decades ago has come to light here.
In a complaint to the Haryana Chief Secretary, the local residents stated that “the place, which ought to have been a hub of social and cultural activities, has been reduced to a ‘shopping complex.’” The residents have sought the cancellation of the allotment.

In the representation signed by over a dozen residents, led by social activist Krishan Lal Gera, it has been pointed out that the social organisation, which was formed and registered in 1957, was allotted 1480 sq. yards in the prime commercial area of NH-I of the NIT.

It is stated that the plot was allotted through the Department of Rehabilitation in market number one. The government had laid down several conditions during the allotment, including no alteration or addition to the building approved by the notified area committee or the officer appointed by the vendor.

In was stated in the sale deed that the allottee shall not use the plot for any other purpose other than social welfare. In effect, no residential or commercial building was allowed to come up on the allotted plot.

It has been alleged in the complaint that the allottee converted the plot into a commercial complex. As many as 45 shops were built in the complex and rented to shopkeepers.

It has been further alleged that no permission was sought from the Rehabilitation Department, Chief Settlement Commissioner and the Managing Officer (Tehsildar-sales), Faridabad.

Though the Tehsildar had objected on several occasions, the local Municipal authorities failed to initiate action against.

It has been pointed out that the promise of starting a charitable eye hospital and a pathology centre here was never fulfilled.

Demanding the cancellation of the allotment and a high-level probe into the case, the complainants have threatened to file a PIL in the court if no action is taken soon.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 4
Senior pharmaceutical and biotechnology leaders of India yesterday declared their wholehearted support for developing a preventive HIV/AIDS vaccine at a workshop in Delhi. The business leaders discussed the importance of private sector participation in fighting the scourge of HIV/AIDS.

The workshop on health technologies with a special focus on preventive AIDS vaccine was organised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).

Senior policymakers and a group of industry representatives attended the meeting. This included representation from Novartis, Panacea Biotech, BD Biosciences, Serum Institute of India, Chembiotek Research International, and Rallis India.

The objective of the workshop was to highlight market opportunities for the Indian industry and address some of the challenges that have constrained the companies from participating aggressively.

According to Dr Seth Berkley, President and CEO, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, the phenomenal growth of Indian companies in pharmaceutical R and D over the last few years proves their potential capabilities in the field.

“Research on preventive AIDS technologies, especially a vaccine, presents several opportunities. The Indian vaccine industry, positioned as the third largest supplier of vaccine in the world, has the unique opportunity to become the vaccine hub of the world.

The R and D opportunities that the Indian pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies can consider are immense.”

The Indian industry is in a better position to explore the scope for its own involvement in the years to come, feels the Executive Director of Serum Institute of India, Dr S V Kapre. He said, “Over the years, the Indian industry has been able to reach a stage where it has become a global force. This allows it to get involved in newer challenges.”

Mr Ranjit Shahani, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Novartis India stressed the need for industry and the Government to step up investment in healthcare in India, including R and D and delivery mechanisms.

He said, “Public Private Partnership is one of the potential strategies to address the challenges. Clearly, the successful amalgamation of the skills of the private industry and the Government bodies is also required in the research and development of AIDS preventive technologies.”

Deliberations at the workshop focussed on identifying factors/mechanism aimed at creating a more conducive policy regime, explore areas of potential interest for the Indian industry to undertake R and D efforts in this area and also explore innovative models of partnership.

PO depositors duped of lakhs
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, December 4
A woman commission agent of the main post office in Ghaziabad has allegedly cheated dozens of her clients of lakhs of rupees. She had been collecting monthly installments from her clients but never deposited the same in their respective accounts. Somehow, she used to get the passbooks stamped.

Some departmental officials are also suspected to be hand in glove with the woman, who had started her career as a post office recurring deposit scheme agent about three years ago.

She allegedly got a recurring deposit account opened for 50 clients, in violation of many rules and procedures. Under a recurring deposit scheme, women agents get four per cent commission as against one per cent for men.

According to the officials, the woman had registered the agency in her own name to earn higher commission. In fact, her husband used to collect the amounts from the account holders for depositing it in their post office accounts. He was reportedly working for over 100 clients, including some cops, who had invested in different schemes.

However, it is learnt that their installments had not been deposited for six months or even longer. The fraud came to light when some depositors went to the post office to collect their money on maturity of the scheme.

The body of human beings has a natural process of producing drugs which treat diseases. If a man has a disturbed state of mind, it can be calmed by “beej mantra”, a kind of meditation, they claimed.

The experts said that the subject of spiritual medicine should be included in schools, colleges and medical science.

They claimed that confession and communication are two easy modules of controlling the disturbed state of mind. One should not harbour negative thoughts at all.

Through meditation, it has been shown that the diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, paralysis, asthma and acid peptic can be kept under control with virtually no or minimum allopathic medicines.
