Mumbai dancer held in sex racket catering to VIPs
Noida, December 4 The racket was operating in a well-heeled circle and the call girls used to travel from Mumbai by air. They were operating in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi etc. The accused used to rent out farmhouses, posh guesthouses, flats etc in VIP areas to entertain their customers. A number of VIPs are in a state of panic following the arrests and fear that the police or the arrested persons may spill the beans. According to well-placed sources, the police had been on the trail for sometime. They had information that a sex racket was active in the city involving models and dancers from Bollywood, who would fly to the city to entertain a select group of clientele. It is alleged that some high profile pimps are also involved in the racket. According to the police, the pimps used to ostensibly book the girls in Mumbai for a “dance show”. Since VIPs generally stay in flats in posh colonies, the police had little access to their love nests. The racketeers would travel in expensive limousines, so that a huge fee could be extracted from the rich clients. Often, five-star hotels were the meeting points. According to the police, the racketeers had hired a bungalow (No.102) in Sector-39, Noida. Interestingly, when the sleuth reached the bungalow, they found a padlock on the main gate. They were about to retreat when they heard come commotion inside. Later, the cops entered the house forcibly and nabbed the racketeers. The arrested call girls were identified as Madhu, Kajal and Rachna. Two men were also arrested by the police. The police have found telephone dairies in which names of the call girls, the dates of the transactions and the payments have been recorded. Further investigation is on.

New Delhi, December 4 The workshop on health technologies with a special focus on preventive AIDS vaccine was organised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). Senior policymakers and a group of industry representatives attended the meeting. This included representation from Novartis, Panacea Biotech, BD Biosciences, Serum Institute of India, Chembiotek Research International, and Rallis India. The objective of the workshop was to highlight market opportunities for the Indian industry and address some of the challenges that have constrained the companies from participating aggressively. According to Dr Seth Berkley, President and CEO, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, the phenomenal growth of Indian companies in pharmaceutical R and D over the last few years proves their potential capabilities in the field. “Research on preventive AIDS technologies, especially a vaccine, presents several opportunities. The Indian vaccine industry, positioned as the third largest supplier of vaccine in the world, has the unique opportunity to become the vaccine hub of the world. The R and D opportunities that the Indian pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies can consider are immense.” The Indian industry is in a better position to explore the scope for its own involvement in the years to come, feels the Executive Director of Serum Institute of India, Dr S V Kapre. He said, “Over the years, the Indian industry has been able to reach a stage where it has become a global force. This allows it to get involved in newer challenges.” Mr Ranjit Shahani, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Novartis India stressed the need for industry and the Government to step up investment in healthcare in India, including R and D and delivery mechanisms. He said, “Public Private Partnership is one of the potential strategies to address the challenges. Clearly, the successful amalgamation of the skills of the private industry and the Government bodies is also required in the research and development of AIDS preventive technologies.” Deliberations at the workshop focussed on identifying factors/mechanism aimed at creating a more conducive policy regime, explore areas of potential interest for the Indian industry to undertake R and D efforts in this area and also explore innovative models of partnership. |
