‘CME’s important for upgrading skills of doctors’

The kneejoint replacement surgery has come of age in India. Now the joint replacement has become a common feature. However, the orthopaedic experts need to be thoroughly trained and well versed with technique to ensure good results.

Delivering the Dr Lionel Henry Lobo Memorial Lecture at Christian Medical College and Hospital here today, Padma Bhushan Prof K.H. Sancheti, Director, Sancheti Institute of Orthopaedics, Pune, said there was the need to popularise it so that maximum number of people benefitted from it.

Dr Lobo, was a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, former professor, Head of Department Orthopedics and principal of CMCH. In his memory, Department of Orthopaedic, CMCH, jointly with the Dr L.H. Lobo Memorial Trust organised the 22nd Annual Dr L.H. Lobo Memorial Oration and continuing medical education (CME) on ‘total knee arthroplasty’ here today.

Dr John Pramod, acting director, CMCH and Dr Mohan Verghese, Principal, Christian Medical College were the guests of honour. Mr Sukpat Rai Wadhera, president; Dr S.K. Chopra, honorary secretary and Dr J.C. Saha, honorary treasurer of Dr L.H. Lobo Memorial Trust and Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH, were also present on the occasion.

Dr Pramod, while speaking on the occasion emphasised the importance of CMEs in upgrading the skills of the medical practitioners and instilling quality in the services provided to the patients. He expressed his admiration for the orthopaedic surgeons to keep the world mobile.

The CME was held after the oration, wherein eminent orthopaedic surgeons from the country and abroad with extensive experience in the field, delivered talks on various topics. They included C.V. Ananthakrishnan, Texas; Dr D.K. Gupta, New Delhi; Dr S.K.S. Marya (New Delhi), Dr N.K. Aggarwal (Ludhiana); Col. B.K. Singh (New Delhi); Dr A. Rajgopal (New Delhi); Dr P.S. Maini (New Delhi) and Dr O.N. Nagi. More than 300 delegates participated in the programme.

City skaters win 13 gold medals

Ludhiana, November 27
Ludhiana skaters proved their mettle by winning 13 out 29 gold medals which were decided in the 16th Punjab State Roller Skating Championship for boys and girls being held at the Leisure Valley Rink today. Amritsar followed the hosts with nine gold while Patiala fetched four titles.

Earlier, Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, inaugurated the championship in which 350 skaters of different age groups from all over the state are taking part.

Jalandhar athletes win 5-km walk

Hardeep Singh and Sukhdeep Kaur, both of Jalandhar romped home victorious in the gruelling 5-km walk in the boys and girls (u-19 years) sections respectively on the second day of the Golden Jubilee Punjab Schools Inter District Athletics Meet being held at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

In the boy’s section, Antar Singh of Sangrur and local lad Hardeep Singh secured the second and and third position respectively while in the girl’s section, Kamaldeep Kaur of Ludhiana and Ranjit Kaur of Ropar finished second and third respectively.

30 cyclists attend camp at PAU

Ludhiana, November 27
More than 30 cyclists drawn from different colleges, affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, are currently attending training –cum- coaching camp at the velodrome of Punjab Agricultural University.

Mr Tejinder Singh, a former national-level cyclist, who is also working as lecturer in the Physical Education Department of a local college, said these boys and girls had been undergoing strenuous training since October 25. The training would end on November 29. Their schedule includes training in the road as well as track races.

The cyclists of BBK DAV College, Amritsar, HMV College, Jalandhar, SDAM College, Dina Nagar, and Khalsa College, Amritsar, would vie for top honours during the one-day Guru Nanak Dev University Inter-College Cycling Championship to be held here on Novermber 30, Mr Tejinder Singh added.
