Deepak shines in St Soldier win

An unbeaten half century by Deepak Kumar enabled St Soldier XI, Panchkula, beat Himachal Cricket Club by 56 runs in the first Avison sports cash prize knockout cricket tournament at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, here today.

In another match, Victorious XI beat Chandigarh Youth XI by six wickets.

Scores: St Soldier XI 137 for 5 (Deepak Kumar 77 n.o., Kailash 20, Narinder 2 for 26), Himachal CC 81 all out (Narinder Kwatra 14, Suresh Sharma 2 for 19); Chandigarh Youth XI 148 for 6 (Rohin Rana 48, Amandeep 19, Nittin 2 for 24), Victorious XI 149 for 4 (Ajay Verma 72 n.o., Manoj Mehta 23, Suraj 18, Sameer Aggarwal 2 for 14).

DAV school win carrom tournament

DAV Senior Secondary School Team B won the boys’ senior team championship on the second day of the fourth Saupin’s inter-school carrom tournament here today.

They defeated DAV Senior Secondary School team A in the final. Saupin’s School Team A won the girls’ senior team championship while Bhavan Vidyalaya were the runners-up. In the boys’ junior category, Bhavan Vidyalaya were the winners and Saupin’s School Team A the runners-up. In the girls’ junior category, Saupin’s School Team B were the winners and Saupin’s School Team A the runners-up.

Mayor takes up property tax issue with Tyagi

The Mayor, Ms Kamlesh, today spoke to the State Election Commissioner for Chandigarh and Delhi, Mr M.P. Tyagi, on the issue of violation of the code of conduct on the notification of property tax by the UT Administration.

Ms Kamlesh said Mr Tyagi refused to divulge the details of the reply filed by the UT Administration with regard to the announcement of the notification of 3 per cent property tax.

“However, he did say that the State Election Commission had given its verdict, holding the UT administration guilty of violation. However, I was told that it was up to the Administration to fix responsibility and take action,” she said.

It may be recalled that the leaders of the Congress party had termed the notification of the property tax at the time of the election as a violation of the code of conduct and forwarded a complaint to the commission.

The Congressmen had also alleged that the announcement was made at a time when the election process was on in Ward No. 11 to benefit a particular candidate and put the Congress at a disadvantage. 

Admn working for better civic amenities, says DC

The local Deputy Commissioner, Ms Neelam P. Kasni, has asked people to construct toilets in their houses and not defecate in the open.

She was presiding over the khula darbar function organised at Rattewali village near on Wednesday. She said the district administration would also undertake the construction of public toilets near the labour colonies, where the houses did not have enough space for constructing toilets. She said the administration was working to ensure that people got proper drinking water, power supply, education and health care.
