Ganguly hopeful of a favourable verdict
New Delhi, November 25 "It went off very well. I am hopeful...," he told reporters after emerging from a three-hour teleconference with New Zealand barrister Tim Castle, appointed by the International Cricket Council to hear the Indian captain's appeal against the two-Test ban imposed on him for slow over rate by Match Referee Clive Lloyd. Ganguly said he expected the verdict, which would decide whether he plays in the second Test against South Africa beginning on Sunday in Kolkata, to be announced tomorrow. Asked specifically if he expected the decision to go in his favour, he said, "I have no idea but the way the teleconference went, it looked very good." Ganguly, who was accompanied by coach John Wright, Jagmohan Dalmiya and lawyers Siddartha Shankar Ray and Ushanath Banerjee, also thanked the Board for its support. "I think the Board should support all players. They have done it in the past during the South Africa series. That time also they stood by the players. I am thankful to BCCI for its support." Castle conducted the teleconference from Wellington (New Zealand) while Lloyd hooked in from USA and ICC's in-house lawyer Urvasi Naidoo joined it from London. Ganguly's availability for the second Test against South Africa, starting in Kolkata on Sunday, depends on the verdict. Dalmiya and coach John Wright also joined in the hearing. The teleconference began at the scheduled time but got delinked for some time before it started again. Castle will consider the evidence he has heard from all the parties along with the grounds of the appeal, paperwork from Lloyd and video of the match before giving his verdict. He will then provide a written decision to the ICC which will be forwarded to Ganguly, Lloyd and ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed. Ganguly was slapped a two-Test ban by the ICC for slow over rate in the Platinum Jubilee one-day match against Pakistan in Kolkata on November 13. After the skipper appealed against the ban, the ICC appointed Castle to decide on the appeal. The verdict of Castle, who has the power to increase, decrease, amend or substitute his own decision with that of the Match Referee, would be final and binding. In case he rejects the appeal, Ganguly would have to sit out of the Kolkata Test as well as the first Test against Bangladesh (Dec 9-13).

We are proud of Kanpur show: Smith
Kolkata, November 25 Smith, who became South Africa's youngest skipper when he took over the reins of
the side as a 22-year-old in 2003, also says it would be "something massive" if his young side managed to pull off a win and clinch the
two-Test series. "We had a solid game. We are proud at the way we played in Kanpur. It is disappointing that there was no result. But India are an experienced side and they start as favourites," Smith told newspersons shortly after arriving in the city. "It will be a massive thing if we pull off a win," added the young skipper. |
Zimbabwe lifts ban on British scribes
Harare, November 25 The radio said some of the journalists did not have their names on the websites of organisations they claimed to be working for. It quoted Moyo as saying "further enquiries have since been carried out and all journalists have been cleared for accreditation" by the country's official media commission. The delay in clearing the 13 journalists, which had threatened to scupper the forthcoming five-match series of one-day internationals, was purely "an administrative matter that would have been speeded up had the affected journalists supplied the necessary information on time," the report said. England are due to play their opening one-day international in Harare tomorrow. The Zimbabwe government accuses Britain's press of having a hostile news agenda towards its former colony, aimed at tarnishing the reputation of president Robert Mugabe's government. In the past journalists from that country have been accused of trying to sneak into the country under the pretext of covering sport to cover other stories. The government has banned the BBC from reporting permanently from Zimbabwe, while two other news correspondents for the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian have been evicted from the country in recent years. Zimbabwe accuses Britain of working with the main opposition party to effect a regime change in the country. The chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket, Peter Chingoka, said he was unable to comment at the moment about the government's position on accreditation of all journalists. —

Punjab dismissed for paltry 175
Chandigarh, November 25 The Punjab batting line-up having Dinesh Mongia, Yuvraj Singh, Pankaj Dharmani and in-form Ravneet Ricky in their ranks were bundled out for a paltry 175 facing an inspired Baroda seam attack. Fresh from the outright victory in their previous match against Assam at Amritsar, the hosts were expected to perform well. But their strong batting crumbled in the face of disciplined bowling from the rival seam attack. Disciplined Rakesh Patel, Irfan Pathan Sr and Shekhar Joshi bowled with unerring accuracy and aggression, making the hosts batting look clueless. They shared spoils among themselves as Punjab batting caved in meekly. India one-day specialist Yuvraj Singh was back in the pavilion without opening his account, while skipper Mongia and was dismissed when he had not yet reached the double-figure mark. Dependable Pankaj Dharmani was scalped by seamer Irfan Pathan after the batsman had scored 11 as half the Punjab batting side was back in the pavilion with just 74 runs on the board. The wickets continued to fall as the hosts, at one stage, were in a miserable position at 121 for eight. The slide was arrested by left-arm spinner Navdeep Singh and No 10 batsman Gagandeep Singh. Both scored 22 runs apiece which saved Punjab from total disaster. Ravneet Ricky, who made a century in the last match, was the highest scorer with 42. J&K bundled out for 79
Jamshedpur, November 25 Winning the toss, Jharkhand skipper Sumit Panda sent Jammu and Kashmir in to take the advantage of early moisture of the pitch. Mihir Diwakar led the pace attack, scalping four wickets for 17, while Panda, Sanjeev Gupta and S.S. Rao picked up two wickets each. The young Jammu and Kashmir batsmen could not negotiate the lively pace attack of Jharkhand and lost witckets at regular intervals. Opener S. Gupta (14), Kavaljeet Singh (12) and Arshad Bhat (14) managed to reach the double figure mark, with extras contributing 14. Jammu and Kashmir were all out for 79 soon after lunch. Chasing the small total, Jharkhand also began on a disastrous note after losing the openers in quick succession. Ratan

Punjab Police lift Nehru hockey title
New Delhi, November 25 In a match bereft of many meaningful moves, with Punjab Police calling the shots and BSF playing second fiddle, the deadlock was broken when custodian Manpreet Singh brought off a brilliant save to baulk Raj Singh in the crucial fifth shot in the tie-breaker shootout to give the cops a well-merited victory. BSF were in advantage when, of all players, Olympian Baljit Singh Dhillon swept over the goalpost to the stunned disbelief of the cops after the teams converted their first two shots to be 1-1. Jugraj Singh scooped high, beyond the reach of BSF custodian K.M. Subbaiah, and the ball hit the roof of the net to put Punjab Police ahead (1-0). BSF captain Harbhajan Singh made a clean and stiff hit to equalise. Then Baljit hit over while Devinder Kumar scooped in to put BSF 2-1 ahead. Captain Prabhdeep Singh levelled the score for Punjab Police (2-2) while BSF suffered a setback when Mukhjinder Singh strayed his attempt. Gagan Ajit Singh scooped in without any problem to put Punjab Police in the lead (3-2) while Marinus Lakra squared off for BSF (3-3). Daljit Singh Dhillon made no mistake with his scoop to regain the lead for Punjab Police (4-3) and now all eyes were focussed on Raj Singh to bail out BSF. Manpreet did a fine job to stop him and Punjab Police won their third Nehru Hockey Trophy in a row, and seventh overall, off 12 appearances in the final. BSF, who last won the title in 1996, defeating Punjab Police in the title clash, met the same fate as in 1999, when they lost to Punjab and Sind Bank in
the final. Indian Oil defeated Bharat Petroleum 5-4 to take the third position. |
