Mumbai girls clinch tennis title

Chandigarh, November 22
Hosts Panjab University, Chandigarh, girls went down fighting to fancied Mumbai University in the final to attain runner-up place in the All-India Inter-university Tennis Championship which came to close today on the PU campus.

In the final held today, PU girls, Neha Singh and Harsimran Bedi, went down to Mumbai girls, Isha Lakhani and Krushmi Cheeda. In the first singles, Isha did not face any problem in outwitting Neha Singh at 6-1,6-2. In the second singles, however, Harsimran displayed her prowess and took her opponent Krushmi to three sets . She won first set 7-5, but in the second and third set lost 4-6 and 3-6 respectively. In the doubles, Isha and Krushmi were extended to tie breaker in second set by pair of Neha and Harsimran before former could win at 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).

Third place in this section went in favour of Madras University who got the better of the NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, 3-0.

Tennis team

A seven-member Haryana team will take part in the All-India Civil Services Tennis Tournament to be held in Hyderabad from November 24 to 28.

The team consist of S.K. Mongia, D. Suresh, Anil Malik, O.P. Kathuria, J.S. Dhanda, Praveen Chaudhary and Jaswant. Amar Singh will accompany the team as coach.

Cricket team

A superb batting by Gurjeet Madra, who scored 43 runs, enabled St Kabir School, Sector 26, in beating Chaman Vatika, Ambala, by 30 runs in the first Satluj Cricket League for ICL Trophy being played at Satluj Public School ground in Panchkula.

Brief scores: St Kabir-26: — 182 for 6 in 25 overs (Gurjeet Madra 43, Vijay Partap 36, Arjun 2 for 25); and Chaman Vatika — 152 in 24.4 overs (Jagdeep 28, Arjun 21, Aaman Jain 22, Arun Chadha 3 for 20, Sudip 2 for 15, Varun Sood 2 for 25).

In another league match, Hansraj Public School, Panchkula, defeated Little Flower, Panchkula, by 16 runs.

Brief scores: Hansraj Public School — 152 for 3 in 25 overs (Manan Vohra 62, Sourav Chopra 32); Little Flower School — 136 for 9 in 25 overs (Lovely Thakur 22, Vipul 15 not out, Jatin Gupta 2 for 18, Sazir 2 for 16).

Selection trials

The Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association, will hold trials to select the district team to participate in the Haryana Inter-district Cricket Tournament for under-22, at Government Senior Secondary School in Sector 19 here on November 24 at 6.30 a.m, according to secretary Surinder Singh Baiji. Boys born after September 1, 1982, are eligible to take part in the trials. Chandigarh will play their first match against Panchkula on November 26 at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology in Barwala, near Panchkula.

ITBP athletics meet begin

Chandigarh, November 22
The 24th Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) athletics meet began here today at the Bhanu Training Centre Ramgarh, about 20 km from here. The four-day meet was inaugurated by Mr A.A. Siddiqui, Director-General Police, Punjab.

Hawaldar Rajveer Singh of Kumaon Sector won first place while Sepoy Ravinder Chauhan of Himachal Pradesh claimed second place while Sepoy Satpal of LAC got third place in 1500 metre race. The eight sectors which are taking part include, Garhwal, HP, Kumaon, Ladakh, L&C, North East I and II and Training centre. A total of 300 participants will vie for top honours.

Weightlifting meet

Srinivas Rao of Army Red in below 56 kg while D. Wilson of Navy in below 62 kg section stole the limelight by winning three titles each in the Inter-Services Weightlifting Championship held here today in the 3 BRD.

Results: below 56 kg — (snatch): Srinivasa Rao 1, (110 kg), V Murugan 2, R Edwin 3; clean and jerk — Srinivas Rao 1, (140 kg), R Edwin 2,V Murugan 3; and total weight — Srinivas Rao 1, (250 kg), R Edwin 2, V Murugan 3.

Below 62 kg: Snatch — D. Wilson1, (110 kg), MP Radhakrishnan 2, Dathan AP 3; clean and jerk — D. Wilson1, MP Radhakrishnan 2, Dathan AP 3; and total weight — D Wilson1, MP Radhakrishnan 2.

Annual athletics meet

Ramesh Chandra Singh bagged first place in the triple jump in the 52nd annual athletics meet of Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh, held today on the college premises. Earlier, the Principal of the college Mr Balvinder inaugurated the meet.

Results: (winner) —10,000 metres: Parveen Kumar; high jump: Bhavtaran Singh; 1500 metres: Virendra Singh; hammer throw: Dijen Singh; discus throw: Sukhdeep Singh; 3,000 metres: Virender Singh; and Long Jump: Bhavtaran Singh.

Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Games from December 2

Chandigarh, November 22
The All-India Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Games in girls section will be held from December 2 to 5 at various venues in Chandigarh and Panchkula. The players from Bihar (Ranchi Zone), Delhi-Punjab Zone, Haryana (Faridabad Zone), Chandigarh-Panchkula Zone, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh (Chattisgarh Zone), South Zone, West Bengal-Sikkim-Orissa Zone and Bihar (Patna Zone) will compete in this
four-day meet.

Dr V.P. Paul, Principal of Chaman Lal DAV School, Panchkula, said competitions would be conducted in basketball, volleyball, handball, kho-kho, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics and athletics.

The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at Chaman Lal DAV School, Sector 11, Panchkula.

The athletics competitions will be conducted at the Sector 7 Sports Complex in Chandigarh. Competitions for boys would be organised in Ghaziabad from November 27 to 29.

Shuttlers gear up for Commonwealth meet

Indian badminton team will face a tough competition among eight top ranked teams of the world in the Commonwealth Youth Games (Under-19) 2004 going to be held at Bendigo (Australia) from November 29 to December 4. The team, comprising three boys and three girls, have been attending a training camp at the Panjab University Coaching Centre, which will conclude on November 26.

The players — (boys) Anand Pawar (Maharashtra), Jishnu Sanyal (West Bengal) and Sagar Chopda (Maharashtra); amd (girls): Saina (Andhra Pradesh), Aparna Balan (Kerala) and Saili (Maharashtra), are being trained by Mr Surinder Mahajan, a Sports Authority of India coach posted at the PU Coaching Centre. He will accompany the team as coach to Australia.

The badminton events will be held from December 1 to 3 in team championship only and in the best of five format.

“The players are given training in two sessions: from 9.30 am to 11.30 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm,” said Mr Mahajan.

Jishnu the youngest player of the team at 16, is ranked one in India. He recently took part in the World Junior Badminton Championship held at Vancouver, Canada, where he defeated the ninth seed in junior section from Chinese Taipei.

Mr Mahajan said all players were in good form Recently Anand Pawar son of a former Thomas Cup player Uday Pawar, has recently won singles title in the Czech Republic. He said the presence of teams like Singapore, Malaysia, England will further toughen the competition but they hope to perform well.

Badminton events will be held for the Ist time although the first Commonwealth Youth Games were held in 2000. The team will take part under the banner of Indian Olympic Association. A total of 26 men and 19 women will participate in six disciplines-athletics, badminton, boxing, swimming and weightlifting.

Governor wants responsive Admn

Holding his first meeting with officials of the Chandigarh Administration, the UT Administrator Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), made it clear that he wanted zero tolerance for corruption and a responsive Administration.

Seeking the involvement of residents of the city in its development process, the Administrator, today underlined the need for a transparent and accountable Administration.

Gen. Rodrigues said he, along with his wife, would be visiting various places of the city to identify problem areas and to know how they could be helpful in solving those problems. Emphasising the need for a transparent and accountable administration, he asked his Adviser to examine the instructions of the Right to Information Act combined with a citizen’s charter for each department.

The General said Chandigarh had to be projected as a model city with certain pilot projects in priority areas for the rest of the country to replicate.

Aujla is MC Commissioner

Chandigarh, November 22
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs today appointed Mr P.S. Aujla as Commissioner, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. He replaced Mr M.P. Singh.

In Chandigarh, Mr Aujla, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, was the SDM (1985-86) and the Assistant Estate Officer (1990-91). TNS

The Deputy Commissioner-cum-Labour Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, today directed owners of shops, commercial establishments and factories to grant short leave to their workers, who are to cast their votes during the forthcoming Municipal Corporation election to Ward No. 11, comprising Sectors 20 and 33, to be held on November 28.
