PEC staff may get extension to file options
Chandigarh, November 22 A delegation of the Group C and D Employees Union of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) deemed University today met the Home Secretary, Mr R.S. Gujral, regarding certain clarifications over the protection of their service conditions once they opted for permanent absorption in the deemed university. Mr Jiwan Singh, president of the association, said that earlier the deadline to give the option was November 30. The Home Secretary assured the delegation that the clarifications would be given soon. Earlier, the association had met the Adviser to the UT Administrator. It may be mentioned that in a recent communication to the college, the Administration had sought options from the employees on whether they wanted to be absorbed in the deemed university or reverted to the administration. The employees had pointed out certain contradictions in the notification and the memorandum of agreement. The Para 29 of the notification provides that all service conditions of the absorbed employees in the PEC society will remain the same as if they were government servants and no service conditions would be modified, which was detrimental to the employees. The employees wanted to know whether the benefit of enhancement in the retirement age from 58 to 60 years would be available to the employees who opted for permanent absorption in the PEC society and were due to retire in September, October, November and December this year. |

The Political Science Association of DAV College, Sector 10, organised a talk on “Present Day China: Its internal and External Prespective”. Dr Damdor Panda, Chairman of the Central Asian Studies, Panjab University, delivered the talk. In the lecture, Dr Pande said there were two different opinions on present day China. One maintained that China had done tremendous progress and other maintained that the country was facing problems. The present day leadership has been following Dengist line- policy of reform and open door. In the present scenario, China-India friendship was progressing further. The two countries have some kind of covert competition but would like to have cooperation with Russia, to have multipolar world. Meanwhile, the Psychology Association of DAV College, Sector 10, organised a lecture on Neuropsychology by Dr Ashima Nehra, Assistant Professor in Neuropsychology, PGI. She spoke on concepts in Neurocognition like intelligence, memory, forgetting, and the specialised functions of lobes impaired due to lesions, head injury, hemorrhage and tumor. Declamation contest
As many as 18 participants from various colleges and Panjab University participated in an inter-college declamation contest on “ Declining Human Values - a challenge before the youth in the present scenario” organised by GGDSD College and Sri Satya Sai Sangathan here today. Mr A.C. Vaid, Principal of the college, hoped that youth will realise their duty and responsibility. Mr Chander Mohan Gupta of Hind Motors was the chief guest. There was a demand for more than a million IT experts in the world by 2010 and to meet the requirement the Indian students need to acquire higher education abroad as it was easier to enroll with foreign universities through legal means. Mr Kamal Bhumbla, Chairman of BN Overseas Educational Trust, while addressing a seminar here said due to lack of awareness on the part of students and their parents, many were becoming victims of unscrupulous travel agents. The trust has organised similar seminars in different parts of Punjab to create awareness on the legal ways to go abroad for higher studies. |
Harassment of Urdu poet: police asked to investigate
Panchkula, November 22 The complainant, Mr O.P. "Rehbar" Ambalvi, approached the court and alleged that he was being harassed by his wife, Shanno Devi, her brother Kishan Lal, his wife Lajja Devi, their three sons, Bal Mukand, his son Rajesh, and Om Prakash. He said he feared that the above-mentioned persons would frame him in a false case. He therefore sought the court's help. He stated that he had been married for the past 20 years and had three sons. He alleged and that his in-laws had been interfering in his family life. They had been instigating his wife against him and his parents for the past couple of years. He said on November 18, his wife demanded Rs 2,000 as she had to go to her brother's house, and when he refused, she abused and assaulted him. |
